WHY 4SPEED FOR MONTY AND FORT???
« on: December 08, 2011, 01:07:27 pm »
when it comes to choosing the suv or pick up truck we always debate on two things , the horsepower and the twist .probably the 3rd would be the exterior design of the vehicle.
but seldom do we notice the NUMBER OF SPEED INSTALLED IN THE A/T . no this is not an inquiry as to what is more reliable m/t or a/t.... let's just assume that no M/T variant is available... needless to say that the tarmac congestion resulted to the many purchasing an a/t regardless if its SUV or pick up.

the inquiry lies on the fact that 5speed is the standard for a/t . now adays having a 6speed like that of the santa fe and 7 speed for the bmw is becoming the "neo standard".

IF THIS IS THE CASE AS IT MAY BE. WHY THEN THE TOP CONTENDERS IN THE MIDSIZE SUV Such as the MONTERO SPORTS AND THE FORTUNER ARE MATED WITH A 4SPEED A/T. in the compact SUV the top variant subaru FORESTER 2.5XT TURBO IS LIKEWISE SPORTING A 4SPEED A/T. WHAT ARE THE PROS AND CONS? I just find the 4speed a/t very ARCHAIC.

Sir, mag Santa Fe 2.2 R-eVGT ka nalang ---- mas wider and lower than the two you're comparing with and it is a bit shorter. So collectively you have a 7-seater SUV that is roomier width-wise, has lower centre-of-gravity thus giving you better manoeuvring manners on high-speed straights and in sweep cornering.

Also, amongst all the 7-seater midsize SUV out there it puts out the most power and torque (197 metric-hp with 435 Nm peak torque from 1800 rpm to 2500 rpm).... Where pa tayo sir, unless darating this late 2012 ang all-new 2013 Santa Fe hehe ;)

Hang on sir.... Also, not to be outdone, the all-new 2.8-litre Chevrolet Trailblazer 7-seater midsize SUV will arrive 4th quarter 2012, as announced by Chevrolet Philippines. Check out the pickup variant of this, the Chevrolet Colorado, scheduled to be on showrooms floor by late March to April 2012.

The Trailblazer makes 180 hp and produces even a higher pulling-force of 470 Nm torque.

Answer to your question will definitely be cost. More gears means more complexity in design and a more expensive gearbox in the end. Having more gears is better because it gives the engine better spread of ratios that would match the power band of the engine. If only we can have infinite sets of ratios then that would be brilliant but of course its easier said than done. This is what CVT attempted to do but had some durability issues. If you want more gears because you want better efficiency then it is sensible to complain of not having enough gears but if you are after top speed, i dont see any reason why a 4 speed transmission will be slower than a 5 speed because it will be the overall ratio that will prevail when you are in the highest gear. they may have 4 speed only but their ratio can be the same as the 5th gear of the other car. hope this helps
