May I suggest also the the new 2010 Ford Everest 4x4  ;)
Have they fixed the 'matagtag' issue?

Is the ride more comfortable than the Fortuner?

yup, I heard they have already fixed it and made it better in the Everest 2010. Try to test drive and see for your self, It has good performance as well since it runs in 5-speed AT.

I recently went to Subic and saw a 2nd hand LPG-powered Ford E-150 being sold there for a reasonable price well within P1.7m.

I inspected the vehicle and did not notice any defects, though I admit I did not a bring along a mechanic with me.

I was able to request a quick test-drive, and I found it to be more comfortable than the local MPVs/vans being sold here.
Probably the most comfortable van I have ever driven.
No idea about the mileage, since it has been converted to LPG as I formerly mentioned.

Should I go ahead and buy the unit? (I'll bring a mechanic with me the next time around, of course)
Or should I just settle with a brand new van/MPV?

It depends.

Sir entropy96, there would be no problem with the car but you would be having difficulty sourcing for spare parts, especially it's Ford and the e-150 is very rare here...

Grand Starex na lang bro, you'll never go wrong! The fastest van in PI...

I better recommend to you the Hyundai Santa Fe from the design to the safety... this is the one even it is little to expensive. This is the best. (In My Opinion)  :D

For your stated preferences, the santa fe or the grand starex will do IMO.

Test drive the Montero. Nice handling and fuel consumption (17km/li). 3rd row is not that cramp, it only looks that way.
If you will go with the Hyundai's, I can help you get a good deal.

I agree.. test drive the Montero..  :D

But if you would like a larger car for more people, the Starex would be a great choice..

If you like power, get the Montero 3.2 GLS Sport. Nice ride too.  ;D

Hi guys!
After a couple of months, we are still undecided on which car is the most bang-for-the-buck for our needs.

After some careful deliberation, we came down to these choices:
1. Toyota Innova V
2. Mitsubishi MonteroSports GLS
3. Hyundai Grand Starex
4. Hyundai Santa Fe

Most likely we will be buying one of the Hyundai models.
Thank you for all your inputs guys!

If you need space, get the Hyundai Starex. If you want a comfortable SUV, get the Hyundai Santa Fe. I've read some reviews that the Santa Fe drives like a car.

This is just my opinion. :)

I'm really not a fan of Hyundai. But if I set aside the brand, Grand Starex would be my pick. But my real pick is Toyota Innova V.

Almost forgot to update this thread.

We already bought a Toyota Vellfire in Subic port 2 weeks ago.

Thank you for all the suggestions and advices that everyone contributed!

Sir antropy, be aware that you will be doing maintenance to that car later on, scout first where to get your spare parts before bringing your Vellfire to your friendly mekaniko.
This problematic incident also happens to my friend who happens to buy Mazda bongo friendee instead of an Innova.
Good luck.
