--- Quote ---Well, that's it, that's the next-generation BMW 1 Series hatchback we probably (definitely) won't get. It's a shame, too, because this new 1 Series is more in line with U.S. tastes than before, at least by a little. The new car is 3.3 inches longer, .7 inches wider and has a 1.2 inch longer wheelbase which translates to more rear leg room and trunk capacity. Track is up 2 inches in front and 2.8 inches in the back.

For Europe, engine options will be a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine we've seen in Mini vehicles-- though modified to fit longitudinally-- and a 2.0-liter four-cylinder common rail diesel. Horsepower figures stretch from 136 in a 116i to 184 in the 120d. The 120d is the performer of the group hitting 62 in a BMW claimed 7.2 seconds with a top speed of 142 mph. The 116d is the fuel miser of the group returning 54.7 MPG combined.

The standard transmission is a six-speed manual while an eight-speed automatic will be optional. DCT is rumored to be offered later in the model's lifecycle.

The 1 Series also gets interior adjustments inspired by the look and quality of the 3 series.

Juan Camaro:

The new 1-series is better than the previous design. The m is pretty awesome.
