Importing a Classic
« on: June 20, 2011, 11:23:51 pm »
Hi Everyone, this is my first posting.

I am trying to find out if it will be possible for me to import a 40 year old classic car (Land Rover) from the UK where I live into the Philippines.

I am English, but my wife is Philippine and has both UK and Philippine citizenships.

Most of the information I can find seems to be for newer cars - these do not interest me.

Would anyone be able to provide information on how to get an old car into the Philippines without having to pay huge import duties >:( or risk getting the car confiscated and crushed? :'(

Could I import it as parts over a number of separate deliveries? I believe this is called "chop chop".

I can source a left hand drive version from antwhere in the rest of Europe, so that part is not a problem. Neither is taking the car to pieces and putting it back together again - all part of the "fun" of restoration. ;D

You might gleam some information from here: http://www.mapsupport.com/thedatabase/impex/imprtgvehphi.htm

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the link Jo. Sadly, this one was one of the first things that I found on the subject and is dated 1992 - almost 20 years old now.
Apparently, the Philippine embassy in London have up to date information, but that is one route I don't wish to take - they ask too many questions and I don't want to draw attention to myself in this matter.
I read somewhere that my wife may be able to import a car tax free under her Philippine nationality, but am still unsure about the age of the car.
Also I think that the engine capacity for gas guzzler tax has gone up to 2.5 litres.
