Isuzu Crosswind Sportivo Top Gear Philippines Car Review

The Isuzu Crosswind is a very curious model. On the one hand, if I hadn't bothered tracing its physical evolution these past few years via photos on the Internet, I'd have been hard pressed to note the differences between this current-model, top-of-the-line Sportivo automatic variant and, say, its 2004 FX-converted counterparts I'd chased after on Philcoa as a college junior who couldn't afford a week's worth of fuel for her gas-guzzling, hand-me-down ride.

On the other hand, you can't say Isuzu has been lacking in updates to this AUV, as its upgrade history may be likened to the sheer number of times Facebook fanatics feel compelled to change their status messages each day. I don't think there's any cosmetic or entertainment feature the Japanese carmaker isn't beyond putting on succeeding year models. Like I said, curious.

The formula upon which the Isuzu Crosswind is based still holds. The 2.5-liter SOHC in-line-four diesel lump powering it is around after all this time because of its durability--it will probably outlast any other component of the vehicle. The 85 horses and 189 Newton-meters of torque delivered to the rear wheels by a four-speed automatic gearbox counts for a lot of frustrating moments especially when overtaking, but you're bound to get to your destination, anyway, and with patience to spare if you keep in mind that despite the "Sportivo" moniker, the Crosswind's strong suit is utilitarian work.

This seven-seater rides precariously on a double-wishbone-front, rigid-axle-rear setup, and rolls on 235/70 tires wrapped around 15-inch alloys. The lack of feel through the steering wheel makes it seem like you're rowing a boat than driving a car at times. Breaking traction at the rear is discomfortingly easy, as I unwittingly discovered while driving on a wet stretch of road with a fine dusting of sand. Pulling out of the spin and slowing down, however, demonstrated that the brakes work perfectly fine.

Moving on to the Sportivo's cosmetic changes, I can't help wondering if it's a hip-hop video they'd used as a design reference given all the chrome adorning the vehicle, from the grille, the headlamp treatment, the power-folding side-view mirrors with turn-signal repeaters, the taillights, and the alloys. Inside, it's a schizophrenic mix of old and new: the dated gauge cluster gets a nice blue backlight, for instance, and the steering wheel is incorporated with control buttons for the head unit. As usual, the JVC head unit has mind-boggling controls, but the touch-screen, proximity--sensing panel can elicit some ooohs and aaahs from your passengers.

Meanwhile, the bruises I sustained on my right elbow is a testament to how the plastic surfaces covering the black-beige interior look much softer to the touch than they actually are, as I kept on resting my arm on the center console's cover thinking it was really padded. Another thing lacking in padding is the driver's seat, which could use more bolsters for lumbar and lateral support. They're still the best perches in the cabin, though--the second-row occupants might have seven-inch LCD monitors and those on the third row finally get headrests, but good luck to them when the car goes over potholes and speed bumps.

Whether its P1.21-million tag befits the Isuzu Crosswind Sportivo depends on the prospective buyer's tastes and intended use for the vehicle. Other main competitors in this segment are priced comparatively lower, while at the same time delivering more--and I'm not talking about piling on the chrome and the LCD monitors.

This car ain't broke, not at all. What it's suffering from is a datedness that mere upgrades to the sheet metal and interior won't reverse. This coming turn of the decade, it would better benefit from a complete overhaul.

  • maranello_5775 says if only it has a CRDI engine... (29 October 2009)
  • John Martin C. Balinghasay says the sad thing is I think the isuzu company does not have the funds to build a whole new platform for its 3 remaining models and they will just go on until they become the modern equivalent of the jeepney; always updated cosmetically but never improved. Isuzu fans will argue that the engine is the most durable diesel, sure it is and it does not matter if its the slowest and the noisiest. It does not matter also that the Crosswind platform is more than 10 years old since it was called the Hi-lander and does not offer the comfort and space of modern competitors not to mention the horrific handling and bouncy ride just like a jeepney. . . (29 October 2009)
  • heav says 100% right John. Isuzu are good only to build real trucks,,ELF, Forward etc. but for Crosswind, D-max,,,check the interior? Magellan era diesel engines, in short Isuzu's boring products. (29 October 2009)
  • ben says the engines too noisy..... (29 October 2009)
  • Rearmednloaded says dude wala syang ABS... ano ba yan tapos 2010?!! (29 October 2009)
  • ianmitsulancer says if it ain't broke, add something like the CRDi engine, Airbags and ABS to go with our times! (30 October 2009)
  • Roy Eusebio says i hope the crosswind sportivo was additional satellite navigation or SATNAV!!! (30 October 2009)
  • Josef Puechner says The crosswind was nice back when it first came out back in 2001, a very appealing alternative to the then popular Revo and Adventure BUT now it's just... Old. Boring (like said by others. I think automakers need to think about introducing more and more upgrades, aside from just healight/taillight changes and chroming the bumpers. Compare automakers abroad, Europe, Americas, when a new model comes out, it's completely redone, giving the people something to look forward to, to become individuals, not zombies driving the same thing as the next guy. Same thing with the government, when the people aren't happy then the government knows that all they have to do is something minor which keeps the people happy for a short time but doesn't cost them much. We Filipinos need to realize our right to demand for more, for better, for quality, not just take what's given to us. (30 October 2009)
  • Tj says ew it looks cheap and disgusting (30 October 2009)
  • isuzuguy says we just call it "supotivo" hahahaha (01 November 2009)
  • myk384 says it's getting long in the tooth. (01 November 2009)
  • juan says maybe isuzu should just an all-new model to replace the crosswind. or just totally redesign and make very expensive. (02 November 2009)
  • sadam says @ juan--Isuzu has less resources to launch an updated diesel or any new models here in PINAS. As you knew, they already phased out even the TROOPER. Say in the US, the DURAMAX is so popular competing its rivals maybe because of GM support. But anyway, this 4JA1 engine of Crosswind is already proven. pros--reliability, durability & longevity. My XUV reaches 95,000+kms. without any problem on the engine. cons- boring to drive because its noise & vibration, same with Alterra & D-max. (03 November 2009)
  • red18 says good job isuzu! (03 November 2009)
  • albert rangel says hmm...not a good job for isuzu crosswind sportivo..same old fashioned auv!! (03 November 2009)

  • holy saints john says 0-60in 30secs. (04 November 2009)
  • daniel says isuzu, please improve your vehicles, make the engine a CRDi and VGT so it will be powerful and not too noisy, make the leaf springs to coil springs for better comfort, and at least put dual airbags at the front. (04 November 2009)
  • in law says if you want shiny things and bling-blings, get the sportivo. (04 November 2009)
  • gerbo says unfortunately, the biggest update is the price. (08 November 2009)
(09 November 2009)
  • Roy Eusebio says i hope the sportivo adds a navigation system!!! (09 November 2009)
(09 November 2009)
  • ur-zababa says i agree sa mga sinasabi nyo pero sa tingin ko ito yung looks na you wont mind seeing 20 years after. what i mean is it has a classic look....just like the toyota corolla 98'. it has a basic foundations of the SUV that we have known regardless of its creature comforts. (12 November 2009)
  • Arghie says I am fine with the external look, but come on... Imporve nyo naman yung interior lalo na yung dasboard and A/C control.. (14 November 2009)
  • jaguartiu says Mga Isuzu Troopers ng company have common problem...Overheating..broken transmissions. (17 November 2009)
  • Eugene Hernandez says isuzu is famous for its mechanical diesel engines.. ^^ (19 November 2009)
  • hydraulicz73 says I own a 2001 XTO Isuzu Crosswind. I can say that it was really good when it first came out in 2001. But for their new models, Fuel consumption became stronger and for putting bigger wheels on the new crosswind, they should have increased the engine size and having a new design for the engine will be needed because Isuzu engines are really noisy! (19 November 2009)
  • w says i love all isuzu product in terms of quality, but not in terms of horse power, they should adopt the TDi ITEQ 4JK1-TC 2.5L common rail diesel with 116 PS, and TDi ITEQ 4JJ1-TCX 3.0L common rail diesel VGS Turbo Intercooler 163 PS here in the philippines. (25 November 2009)
  • LouisAga says piiiinakamaKUPAD, naaaapakaINGAY, but I still LOVE my '04 XUV... at 105,+++kms, hasn't given me MAJOR headaches.. this is due to the Periodic Maintenance of the 4JA1 engine. its like rearing another child! but the savings on the consumption of fuel is worth it. PROS: 1.)of the boring looks? quite hard to surveille and spot in traffic (try counting the white crosswinds on the road..they're like taxi cabs..they're everywhere!) very convenient for our security requirements. 2.)almost all crosswind units that unwittingly became U-boats due to ondoy are now UP and Running AGAIN. 3.)manila-tagaytay-batangas-manila trip? no problem, won't hurt your pocket. c",) (14 December 2009)
  • marco says di sya masyado maganda.. .. (16 December 2009)
  • tsuper says i dont think isuzu strategy to maintain the old engine and facelift exterior will win the hearth of modern buyers.no wonder why isuzu ignore the complaints and not answering costumer hot line.maybe they are busy putting make-up to their very new sportivo. (29 December 2009)
  • Mark Gonzales says I owned 2010 isuzu sportivo At, very appealing w/ its new touch screen jvc and 2 monitors equip.and ung engine 4jA1 turbo intercooled and we went to baguio, pasig upto baguio we only consumed 600 pesos of diesel paakyat plng at pagblik nmin just only 450 pesos I admit medyo noisy tlga engine nla pero quality diesel engine performance unlike innova and adventure (02 January 2010)
  • pancho says my dad has one, and i'm bored to death when i drive it, it's a like an annoying cat that won't move away even after how many times you shout (flooring the gas pedal) at it. however, no matter how many of us don't like or at least find this outdated, the fact remains that it still sells. just look around when you drive, there's lots of the new models next to you. (20 January 2010)
  • jonel says I am planning to buy a new auv...the 2010 redesigend model would have been on the top list...the problem however was that the sportivo seemed to be out of date, noisy...worst, the engine is slow.. i mean slowest compared to competition.i guess that it is now about time for isuzu to introduce a vgt and the likes to sportivos engine.. to be candid, yung pangalan lang naman ang "sporty" sa engine nila...reviewing on the comments posted, i believe that all those "constructive" comments are strong enough AND MORE THAN SUFFICIENT for isuzu to introduce a more powerful engine and model...otherwise sportivo will be likened to a dinosaur in few years time... (02 February 2010)
  • yamaha sniper says isuzu should upgrade the engine of sportivo! geez mas mabilis pa ang motor ko sa sportivo 130kph.
  • Arville says Again... Isuzu designer, please! WAKE UP WAKE UP!!! These is a modern era, we need a MODERN DESIGN. Look at Hyundai Tucson, designer is from BMW, result? 101% perfect!
(20 February 2010)
  • FERRARI says di maxadong maganda.. kasi parang FX ang dating .. panget (22 February 2010)
  • arville says Beautiful engine needs/deserves beautiful body. =) (23 February 2010)
  • dexter says we own a 2010 sportivo mt and love driving it. the engine is not that noisy. OA lang kayo na noisy yung engine. fully loaded yung vehicle and can still overtake most sedans on the road. you should probably drive one first before opening your mouths! (01 March 2010)
  • anna says oo nga oa lang mga yan,i just bought mine too and its ok... (04 March 2010)
  • AwakeinCebu says I own a 2004 XUV, yes the engine is a bit noisy - but its dependable and fuel efficient; quite slow to pick up speed - but im not in a racing business and my wife and daughter are comfortable and safe. As they say different strokes for different folks. Im happy with my ride. (12 March 2010)
  • >>>X says Compare with other engines, isuzu is still the best!!! I tried other brands ... ok if it is new but years later in the long run high cost of maintenance will be the problem. Others says mabagal ang isuzu...hmmmmm... I think it depends on the foot of the driver. I think it depends on the each individual. So for those isuzu owner & to be future owner just go with isuzu & nothing to regret.... as I used isuzu for so many years and garantisado... thanks (15 March 2010)
  • jordan says tucson??perfect??if only you said rav4 I agree..wake up dude!! have you heard a hyudai rolled over in nlex because of tie rod end failure??? (31 March 2010)
  • melai says this coming april 2010, toyota will introduce the all new 2010 toyota innova and the all new 2010 toyota vios with 1.3E AT!!! how exciting!!!! (31 March 2010)
  • akong the great says kaylangan nilang/isuzu na dagdagan horse power, current horse power is 85 ba? its too weak. (31 March 2010)
  • vincent chan says the crosswind has its purpose if speed and porma is you game it definitely not the vehicle for you...its build for realibily and toughness that why it is saleable in the provinces (02 April 2010)
  • ken says i really love the crosswind. yes its old, its noisy, and its God-damn bumpy. but i love it. first of all, stop treating the crosswind as an SUV. its not. its an AUV. its a vehicle for working people. for people who are practical and poor. the design may be 10, 20 years old but age is not the point. when you have a design that works, keep it that way. so is the same with the crosswind. its AUV, back-side door configuration (much like the FX) works for the common man. try lifting the hatch out of an old revo and you know what i mean. good things last because they work. its bumpy because it a hauling vehicle..., you can stuff 10 bodies at the back and you won't have to worry about your suspension failing on you. if you want smooth ride, get an SUV or a sedan. me? i will stick to my crosswind because it is reliable. come next ondoy, i'll turn away a benz just to keep my crosswind. its a tough guy's car. big, noisy and burly. but you can bet your bottom it will get you out of a wet situation. ;-) (07 April 2010)
  • sourjerer says hmm yeah.. i can agree that isuzu has lagged behind the development of their engines.. YES the crosswinds engine is quite slow to accelerate, old, shaky, and a little noisy, but its also durable, cost efficient(very good fuel mileage), and dependable....... Yes it lacks aesthetics inside, but then again it is not designed to carry VIP's but, still isuzu needs to improve the crosswind inside and out.. a sort off updating its systems... if isuzu can do that.. then this vehicle would be very dominant in the streets in the philippines.... (13 April 2010)
  • crosswind loser says i felt sorry to all buyers of crosswind, just like me. you do get upset with the 1.2 million pesos spend, you can almost buy the montero 2.5L 4x2, or the tucson, especially the all new sportage will be coming also. sad to say, do have alot of regrets with isuzu. we modern pinoys are smart people, we should start to give good consumer reviews, rather then saying something nice which we dont really mean. i agree with everyone of us, isuzu, up to now, feel really proud to have the best diesel technology. i really wonder know would they explain what hyundai/kai have been doing. never a big fan of korean cars, but i can say, after my financing obligation for the crosswind, its definitely for sale, and might consider the tucson, its nice! (18 April 2010)
(19 April 2010)
  • nathan says pangit b tlga sportivo? kc kung pangit, we would pursue the Tucson! hehe. i think kc, mgnda lng sa sportivo ung pgging tipid sa gas eh.. kasu, wala. tipid lng, mabagal naman. tama, sayang lng ang 1.2M. Ang tucson ata at montero, 1.3M lng db? (20 April 2010)
  • jay says toyota fortuner is better (07 May 2010)
  • Rmrt says Isuzu, take note.. Adding shiny bits, fancy touch screen(watever) radio and other so called improvements doesn't make this car "new" and doesn't justify the price. Its time to let go of this dated but proven car, and make an all new model. Please put in a CRDi engine.. Come on isuzu.. you can do better than this. (19 May 2010)
  • 2005 sportivo says we own 2005 sportivo. c'mon lets not compare sa mga units na mas mataas ang specs...kumbaga adventure at revo lng nmn ata ung kalevel. khit pagtapatin pa nila ung top of the lines nila. diesel to diesel. nasa timing lang ung pagpapatulin. but then i will really appreciate Isuzu when then replace the 4JA1 with a D-max/alterra...additional modifications on tha dash...then short shifting...kung ganito e worth it na ung 1.2M ng buyer. (03 June 2010)
