Car Club of the Month
MyMitsu and me
Evolution is part of any organization, especially a Mitsubishi car club
Words by Dinzo Tabamo, Photography by Dakila Angeles

Nothing prepared us for the sheer number of cars with the tri-diamond badge assembled at The Fort Strip's parking area. Certainly the biggest car club shoot we've handled. Lined up in rows were the cars generations of Filipino car nuts had fallen in love with. From the classic box-type to the Lancer 'pizza pies' to the eighth-generation 'shark' Galants. The 'Pajero Clan' were neatly lined up in the back of the lot. It was both a car show and a trip down memory lane.

According to MyMitsuPh founder and president Oliver Ang, they have about 2,500 'forumers', while full-fledged members number 350. They do what car clubs love doing: car shows, race events, track days, seminars and social works.

What started in May 2004 as a core group of 10 Mitsu owners, has grown into the 70-plus cars arrayed before us this afternoon. The GEB (Grand Eyeball) this day was extra special because of the arrival of colorful cars with numbers on them. It turned out the GEB was a joint EB with the Girl Racers Club (GRC).

Within the club, there are smaller groups that are still under the umbrella organization of MyMitsu. There's the Pajero Clan, the Eclipseworx, the Adventure Club and the VR-Force (a group of seventh- and eighth-generation Galants). We bumped into Mardon Callanta of the Pajero Clan, and we talked about the cliques-within-clubs phenomenon, which was inevitable given the size of MyMitsu.

Some of the members were huddled in small groups, others were interacting with the GRC, but most were drawn to the cars similar to theirs. This was probably how all these car clubs started, guys hanging out in parking lots and talking shop. Even with the forum, the logistics, and the soiree with the GRC, it always comes back to guys checking out what's under the hood. And as long as they keep that spirit of curiosity and camaraderie, it's a safe bet the club is here to stay.
