It’s all well and good to have a car that looks good on the outside, sounds like a dangerous monster, and accelerates with the eagerness of a kid chasing an ice-cream cart. But it’s all for naught if the interior emits a foul stench that scares people away. You may not notice it, but your passengers know it too well: your car smells funny. Don’t let it ruin your driving experience; act on it before it starts to shoo your date away.

No matter how good your car looks or how fast it is, at the end of the day you still need to sit inside if you plan on driving it. Here are some of the common sins people commit inside their vehicles that usually result in bad car odor. You’ve been warned:

1) Eating in your car.
Yes, drive-thru is convenient and sometimes you need to eat on the go, but this is a sure-fire to way invite creepy crawlies, foul smells, and stains all up in your ride. If you need to eat, pull over. It’ll save you a lot of headaches later on.

2) Drinking in your car.
So eating is bad, but drinking inside your car should be safe, right? Not exactly. Sure, drinking out of a take-out coffee cup or a water bottle doesn’t leave you with crumbs, but you run the risk of spilling your drink. At best, that coffee stain will require a thorough steam clean and a lot of time. At worst, it might stay there permanently.

3) Placing meat and wet products in the trunk without any protection.
If you use your car to do your groceries, make sure that you protect your interior from any wet products. Placing things like meat directly in your trunk could result in the moisture seeping into your carpet, which is bad news. For safety, use a box or a plastic container for your wet products. Your interior will thank you.

4) Using the same rag as the one you use outside.
Wherever you go, your car’s exterior is exposed to the elements – rain, dust, dirt, and so on. If you use one rag to clean outside and re-use it on your dashboard, you’re inviting all those elements to the inside of your car as well. This should be obvious, but it bears repeating.

5) Leaving your car’s foul smell alone.
So you’ve addressed the sins above, but your car still has a distinct odor. Maybe it’s an exhaust problem, or a food-related thing that you didn’t spot before. Whatever the case, the worst thing you can do is to leave it alone.
