A Top Gear Philippines reader asks: CR-V, Forester or RAV4?

By Botchi Santos

Good day, Mr. Botchi Santos. I am planning to buy an SUV, hopefully this year, to replace my three-year-old SUV, which is a Montero Sport 3.2GLS SE. Kindly enlighten me about three cute cars that my son has chosen--before I decide which one is the best among them.

The three cute cars are (1) HondaCR-V 2.4 SX AWD, (2) Subaru Forester 2.5 XT AWD, and (3) Toyota RAV4 4WD.

May I know which one of them has: (a) a good ride even on rough roads; (b) a fuel-efficient engine (how many kilometers per liter in city or highway driving?); and (c) an excellent top speed (most important).

Roy Marcial

Hi, Roy. Thanks for sending us your question regarding these compact SUVs. Here's my experience with them:

(1) Honda CR-V 2.4 SX - The thirstiest, most comfort-oriented and most mom-friendly in this lot. You're looking at perhaps 5.5-6km/L in city driving, improving to just over 7km/L on the highway. Driving dynamics is better defined as relaxed rather than sporty. It accelerates hard and will touch 200kph, but it won't feel comfortable doing so. This description, by the way, is for the recently retired model. A new one has just been released, which Honda promises to be more fuel-efficient. Unfortunately, I haven't had a chance to try that one just yet, but it looks better than its predecessor and seems better-built, too.

(2) Subaru Forester 2.5 XT AWD - The best of the lot, hands down. The looks take some getting used to--typical Subaru left-field design--but it is indeed fast, dynamically the best-performing compact SUV, and despite the power, is surprisingly fuel-efficient. In city driving, I get just under 7km/L, but improves to 8.5-9km/L out on the highway, thanks to the prodigious torque from its 2.5-liter turbocharged engine. It's quite old, and a new one is rumored to be coming out in the next 12-18 months. But this current one is still worth every penny. Build quality is also better when compared to other Japanese cars, although it still uses some nasty-feeling hard-touch plastics, and the seats and driving position also take some getting used to. It is also the fastest, with some local Subaru enthusiasts having taken theirs to the far side of 220+kph on the highway. Preferably though, change your tires to something better-suited for high-speed highway driving as the all-terrain Yokohama Geolandar tires aren't comfortable past a sustained 120kph cruising speed.

(3) Toyota RAV4 4WD - I haven't driven one recently, and all I can remember is that it was, quiet, refined and reliable inside. But that it left no lasting impression on me means I was probably lukewarm about the RAV4. Not one of Toyota's best cars. Look elsewhere. Take a look at Kia's Sportage, the most stylish and best-looking compact SUV that has a very premium European feel to it (thanks to designer Peter Schreyer), and its twin model, the Hyundai Tucson, which, with its diesel engine, is the most cost- and fuel-efficient compact SUV. That these two Korean SUVs look good only makes you feel even more smug and satisfied. The Tucson is also pretty fast in diesel trim as the CRDi and VGT turbine-equipped Tucson will easily touch 200kph if you hammer it. My personal best was about 185kph before I chickened out, but the Tucson still had a lot to give.

Hope this helps. Good luck and God bless. Keep it safe!

Go for the Tucson, It's also fuel efficient. When we always go to far provinces, it's only in one tank (balikan). It's 10 km/l in the highway.
    • ddwight 11 months ago
how about the periodic maintenance of the tucson? is it pricier than its counterparts?
      • carwiki 11 months ago
        Ok din naman.
      • safariboi 11 months ago
sir ddwight, diesel fed tucson needs a good periodic maintainance because modern crdi engine is delicate means it might be more pricier if you don't want that black smoke disturbing other motorists behind you.
        • manongtaxi 11 months ago
Lahat naman ng kotse regardless kung diesel or gasolina, kailangan pa din sundin ang pms kasi diyan nakadepende ang pagtakbo ng maayos.
        • ddwight 11 months ago
          thanks..
    • carwiki 11 months ago
Then ok din siya sa rough roads.
      • ddwight 11 months ago
actually i ve seen this nasty crdi tucson along the magsaysay road from infanta, quezon, with its steep inclines, winding roads and almost a kilometer of bad terrain... impressive! thanks for the info.
      • manongtaxi 11 months ago
paanong rough roads? tipong papuntang bicol? di ko maimagine yung feeling nun sa monocoque na katawan ng tucson -_-
    • carwiki 11 months ago
Also good for towing a trailer. :D
      • Fernando Amorsolo 11 months ago
Have you tried towing a trailer? Katakot lang.
        • carwiki 11 months ago
Yes sir, yun nga yung panghatak namin. I saw one na may traler coupling kaso yun yung GLS 2WD.
    • crschavs 13 months ago
10km/L lang for highway? madami bang dala yung tucson na yun? for a diesel fed car on a highway that's quite low. :( how's your city FC?
      • carwiki 11 months ago
Mas malakas, mga nasa 8.5 km/l
        • crschavs 11 months ago
lakas nga. buti nalang 'di yan kinuha namin. nakapagpareserve na kami niyan dati. pero nung nalaman ng dad ko na 8km/L lang sa city, pina-cancel namin agad agad. FC kasi first priority namin kaya we got a Focus TDCi instead.
    • manongtaxi 11 months ago
Parang malakas yata yan sa fuel? 10km/l? diesel ba tucson mo?
  • ddwight 11 months ago
the subaru is a well balanced vehicle..i would prefer it than the above mentioned. i just do not like the noise of the diesel fed counterparts. how about taking a look at the cx5? matipid nga ba?
    • John Rigor 11 months ago
It has the Skyactiv engine mated to a 6-speed mt/at, so probably, yes. But the CX-5 rides a bit harsh according to some owners.

I guess it's best if you test drive all of the cars you tested to see ride quality and feel, then go with the one you like the most.
    • manongtaxi 11 months ago
available ba sa pinas ang diesel na subaru? ano ang specs at variants ng diesel na subaru? boxer engine din ba? and amongst the 3 maganda ang subaru forester compared sa crv and rav4, though wildcard entry ang tucson and sportage which is also a notable choice
      • John Rigor 11 months ago
Sir, from what I know, there are no diesel Subarus here, and Motorimage is not planning to bring one in the near future. I think it has something to do with our dirty fuels. But yes, the diesel has a 145hp boxer diesel engine. :)
  • rupert 11 months ago
Go! for the Rav4 or the Subaru Forester! :D
  • dextermorgan 11 months ago
medyo luma na tlga forester antayin mo muna ung bago kung forester. kung di ka makapag antay the best tlga tucson diesel bagong labas lang yan 2012. or antayin mo rin ung sportage an diesel sportage tlga pinaka pogi sa lahat :D
  • RS500 11 months ago
CR-V at 5.5 km/l? i demand a proper and honest car review from you sir botchi. i drive a 2.4liter crv and i get 7.5 km/l on bumper to bumper edsa traffic. 12km/l during highway driving at 110 kph constant speed.
    • warak1422 11 months ago
      uu nga parang Expedition 5.5km/l...
      • carwiki 11 months ago
        I agree.
      • carwiki 11 months ago
Ano ba sir ibig sabihin ng "Flex Fuel" sa Ford?
        • crschavs 13 months ago
i think it means that it could run on other types of gasoline fuel which is why it's termed flex fuel? i'm not sure pero i've read it somewhere.
    • mts 11 months ago
Sir, did you try accelerating by flooring the gas pedal until you reach 120 to 140kph? I think by doing so, 5.5km/l is realistic enough.
    • crschavs 11 months ago
daming factors ang FC. aside from the engine and driving style, malaki effect ng travel time at distance of travel or averageg speed mo. mas accurate kung masasabi mo kung ilan average speed and distance travelled mo. masyadong subjective ang pagsabi ng "bumper to bumper traffic, minimum, moderate traffic etc." kasi it may vary from person to person.
  • carwiki 11 months ago
Awww... Yung fuel consumption ng CR-V, parang yung 1998 Terrano namin. 2.4 L gasoline din then 5.5 to 6km/l din.
  • neotech93 11 months ago
Personally I like ride quality to be somewhat in the middle of firm and comfortable. I've read somewhere that having a firmer suspension helps put power on the road ergo better performance. Can someone confirm this for me?

Nevertheless, I like mine to be somewhat firm because I have a preference for "feeling" the road. It helps me assess on how fast I should go. (aside from the speeds of other cars)
    • warak1422 11 months ago
the go for BMW X1 xDrive 25i,,,simply the Best
      • neotech93 11 months ago
I agree. But as between the three I'd go with the Forester since it's been said that it has a relatively stiff ride. :D
        • warak1422 11 months ago
          yes Forester,,,pinaka okay sa 3
  • car_mac 11 months ago
In terms of speed as most important in your demands, I will prefer the Forester or RAV4 for you. But I can't guarantee that they have that good ride like the CR-V does based on my experience. And uhmm.. about the efficiency of the CR-V I think it could go better than what you've said Sir Botchi and the 2012 even has an econ button so I think that Crv's efficieny could catch up to the Forester's. I don't mean't to disrespect your knowledge about them but as of I tried and experienced, I would agree to Sir RS500.

Honda CR-V 2.4 SX AWD, owned for 2 years now and yes, the 3rd Gen. CR-V is sort of thirsty. The new one, having test driven it (2.4 EX at Honda Alabang), drives exactly the same as the old one, which isn't a bad thing because it is still very refined, but quieter, and the new one looks more dynamic. On the inside, it also looks damn fine to me! RAV-4, not a tasty SUV to me. Same with Botchi, didn't leave a lasting impression on me aside from being the only crossover to have off-roader features. (Locking Diff. which, lets face it, not more than 30% bring their SUV/CUV off-road). Subaru Forester, yes its very sporty indeed, but, sit it next to the new CR-V, Tucson, Sportage, and CX-5, the Forester is just anonymous, and that brings me on to the CX-5. The CX-5 is very sporty indeed, and looks good, inside and out! Tucson vs. Sportage, I prefer the Sportage since the Tucson drives just like the Sportage, but the Sportage's design will age better, so the crossover I recommend are the new Honda CR-V and Mazda CX-5, but have a test drive with a Kia Sportage too as I'm not so sure about how it drives. As for efficiency, these 3 are very fuel efficient. Top speed you say? I think if that is the most important thing to you, the Forester is your only choice, but wait for the new one.
  • Fernando Amorsolo 11 months ago
Can't say anything since I haven't tried driving the cars in these lot. But in my impression (as for the taste of the inexpert in this segment) Id prefer subaru Forester.
    • manongtaxi 11 months ago
I agree with you in the forester though tucson and sportage is also choice that can be considered
  • torquebender 11 months ago
how about a mitsubishi asx? it looks "cute" for me! an angry cute compact SUV!
    • Fernando Amorsolo 11 months ago
I agree. ASX is at par in looks per se with Tucson ans sportage. But for performance, hands down to Forester.
      • manongtaxi 11 months ago
Nothing would beat the 2.5 turbocharged and intercooled engine of the subaru, though mitsu should've brought the 1.8 diesel asx here
  • 17Sphynx17 11 months ago
hmmm, if he can consider the tucson and sportage, should think that sta fe and sorento are also valid choices as a crossover right? as long as you opt for the diesel, then itwill have power, refinement and fuel efficiency. you'd also have a bit more space than the vehicles you mentioned. just a thought.

  • Fernando Amorsolo 11 months ago

  • caliber38 11 months ago
Why not the CX-5? My dad and I have test-driven it, and the ride quality is relatively comfortable. It has some new looks and new tech. It's not exactly a driver's car, but it is driver-centric. It's also fuel efficient but it's not as powerful as other compact SUVs, but the difference in horsepower is pretty minor anyway. We would have bought it if we had enough money for it...
    • ddwight 11 months ago
a friend of mine says that its about fuel consumption, re cx5, 10 kms to a liter of gasoline..
  • aeronTGco 11 months ago
    Forester for sporty ride!!!
  • GTR911R8 11 months ago
Go for the Subaru Forester 2.5 XT!!!!... it has SPEED, EFFICIENCY, and COMFORT; it also has a Great Cargo SPACE because its cargo has almost a square area, and then folding the 2nd row seat you'll have bigger flat luggage area.. BTW if you want less expensive but has the same characters of the Forester try the All-New Nissan X-Trail CVT.. coz in overseas review these two are the RIVALS in their category.
  • mindkinetic 13 months ago
the crv will remain to be a preffered choice by many in search of a compact suv, the only let down is it's reputation to consume fuel fast. the rav 4 has been an all time favorite during the 90's but gradually loses it's appeal due to it's very safe design and toyota is well reputed for building engines within the useable power of the engine's displacement , so while durability is guaranteed the rav4 lacks the emotional connection which is very important if you really love to drive and test the ability of your ride beyond legal limits. the subaru forester is what i strongly urge you to procure. it's awd is unrivaled, surefootedness in driving any road condition from straight tarmac to meander roads , rugged terrains and slippery road conditions : the symetrical awd is 100% compliant, in addition to this is the most reverred boxer engine which delivers proportionate balance on power to weight ratio and it's immediate response to speed is remarkable. but most of all is the tested safety features of this vehicle , from multiple airbags to a well engineered body that can take collisions head on and protection from side impacts all the more makes this compact suv to BOTCHI's parlance is worth every penny. the subaru forester is THE best choice commensurate to your above mentioned criteria.
  • kapangyarihan_ng_kabayo 11 months ago
If Mr. Marcial prioritizes a fuel efficient engine, then I think he has to go for a diesel compact SUV. Diesels are affordable per liter at the pump plus it's really frugal as it "sips" fuel (a miser if you want to call it). The Korean twins - Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage both have diesel variants which is also the top spec. He can check these two, as what Botchi had suggested. But among his three choices, I'd go for the Subaru Forrester. And if he can wait, he may opt for the Subaru XV instead.
  • francis.buendia24 11 months ago
    how about the subaru xv?
  • carwiki 11 months ago
    Ok rin ang XV.

It's been thought by my experience once. And for sure many heard it "Dapat kung ano 'yung gusto 'yun ang sundin mo". Dahil me kanya-kanya po tayong point of view o gusto. The only problem I see when it comes to choosing is hinanahanap natin ung wala sa gusto natin, then we also see somethin' missing dun sa auto na meron yung wala dun sa isa which in reality turns that no one is perfect. Payo lang po, kung ano yung tipo nyo yun ang bilhin nyo and don't compare it with others for you to enjoy your new car. Just enjoy it! Agree?

  • matmat 11 months ago
Sir antayin mo na lang siguro yung New Everest. Since may bagong Ford Ranger na sigurado susunod na din ang Everest...Diesel din yon for sure. But if you can't wait go for the new CR-V.

Oo nga saan kaya nila patatakbuhin ng 200km/h yung auto? 160kmh nga lang sa SLEX or NLEX hirap na imaintain ng 1 minuto 200kmh pa kaya.
  • mts 11 months ago
If only you didn't provide the choices of 3 "cute" cars, I would really recommend you the Accord 3.5 V6.. :)

Tucson Diesel if you want to be practical.. Subaru Forester if you want a blast! and if you dont want to lose your car on the road (uniqueness)

I vote for SUBARU Forester! It's good and reliable SUV. safe driving mate!
