Avanza, Aveo or Fiesta?

By Botchi Santos

Howdy, Botchi!

My wife and I are planning to buy our first family car this December, and we're having problems picking a car.

We first thought of getting a seven-seater Toyota Avanza. We found out, however, that it's too big for us since our family is just composed of me, my wife, our 10-year old daughter and our two-year old son.

Our next options are the minis--Suzuki Celerio and Chevrolet Spark. But my wife finds the driver's seat too low and she may end up having difficulty driving.

We then compared sedans in the market. We came upon these two choices: the Chevrolet Aveo and the Ford Fiesta. Both are roomy enough for two adults and two kids.

Monthly amortization is our concern since our budget is in the range of P10,500 to P12,000.

Do you have other suggestions for a family that wants to own a car but is tight on the budget?

More power and thank you in advance.

Jon

Hi, Jon!

Thanks for your email and we apologize if it's quite late in reply as we've been going through a whole lot of emails and we’re trying to answer them all.

A few years back I myself was in the same boat--trying to find an affordable run-about that was easy to acquire. Your cheapest option, when you consider monthly payments will be buying a Toyota through Toyota Financial Services' (TFS) lease-to-own program. The car is purchased and the owner's name as it appears in the OR/CR will be 'Toyota Financial Services Leased to (your name).' Some people are picky over the name that appears on the OR/CR but in reality this doesn't make any difference since your name is listed anyway.

The big difference with a vehicle leased from Toyota Financial Services as compared to a traditional financing scheme are lower down payments (as low as 10%, subject to qualifying from TFS), noticeably lower monthly payments, and slightly lower annual insurance costs, which you have to consider. As an example, with my own Toyota Yaris, my monthly amortization is about P400 lower than a comparable bank-financed scheme. Over a four-year period, that works out to just under Php20,000--substantial savings indeed, one that you can use to further pay your annual comprehensive insurance mandatory for all leased and financed vehicles.

From Toyota's line-up you can chose from the Vios (the best-selling vehicle in the country and for good reason), Yaris (highly underrated but very easy to drive everyday and fun, too) and the aforementioned Avanza. In your case, the Avanza might make better sense as your baby won't be a baby for too long and having extra space is always good for added versatility. An all-new Avanza is scheduled to come out very soon so keep an eye on that, or for good bargains on the older model, which I'm sure Toyota will want to sell-out quickly with the arrival of the new one.

The Chevrolet Spark is quite cute, and although I have yet to drive it myself, looks to be a very promising car indeed. Colleagues say it's a fun zippy car to drive in town. But when loaded up with four people, I'm not too sure if it has enough grunt to get things going at a decent pace. Power is always good to have in abundance especially when you need to overtake pesky drivers. The Chevrolet Aveo, however, is getting on with age--not one of Chevrolet's better offerings at the moment. I haven't driven it myself yet but from the onset it gives off that old car feeling. It was conceptualized and designed many years back and thus doesn't offer the modern feeling and convenience of a car conceptualized and designed much more recently. Unless you get a really good deal on the Aveo, I'd much prefer the Spark despite being a hatchback, or look elsewhere.

The Ford Fiesta seems to be the best option in your shortlist. It’s fast, fun, and it offers excellent driving dynamics. While the sedan isn't as exciting as the hatchback, the trunk is really helpful for people who load up their cars regularly. A family like yours would most likely need a lot of space for gadgets and whatnots for the kids. Ford offers a lot of easy-to-bring-home packages for all their cars, and sweetens the deal with free insurance and servicing packages from certain dealerships, too. Do drop by a Ford dealership for a test drive as these special deals are also worth checking out.

A wildcard entry for you is the Hyundai Accent. This car is amazing, very roomy and fun to drive. It’s packed with features you don't expect in a car of this class. The variant range is quite big, from a lowly sub-P600,000 variant to a top-end automatic with multimedia and navigation system. I enjoyed driving this car immensely when I had it, so if you haven't tried one yet, you best make a beeline for the nearest Hyundai dealership to try it out.

Hope this email is of some help to you Jon. Thanks, take care and God bless you and your family!

Jon, don't get the Avanza because its too common and the same w/ the Vios. I would suggest the Grand Livina but if your budget can't carry the price, the Ford Fiesta will do, but the design of the rear of the Fiesta sedan is not that good, straight to the point, UGLY. So i recommend the Mazda 2 Sedan. very cheap and affordable, stylish too.....
    • Kyoichi Sudo Dec 27 2011 @ 10:16am
the Accent is a nice choice though after a few years, its design will age quickly beacuse its design is too modern
    • Kyoichi Sudo Dec 27 2011 @ 12:10pm
Jon, i think you should wait for the 2012 Kia Rio, its coming this January. Its the perfect car for your family-spacious, stylish, quality, high-tech features and the best of all, affordable
  • timberz Dec 27 2011 @ 10:39am

  • gogogo Dec 27 2011 @ 12:03pm
if you don't care what your car looks like i'd recommend the avanza. extra space is good. you never know when you'll need it.
  • 17Sphynx17 Dec 27 2011 @ 12:24pm
Well, from what I can see, you are not after a car with a trunk really given how you are shortlisting vehicles.

If you are looking for a manual, then I'd say the Fiesta is not a bad choice. The Avanza is a good choice for you if you still plan to expand your family =)

Good luck in your car shopping. =)
  • dom402 Dec 27 2011 @ 02:17pm
Jon, go for the Ford Fiesta. You can't go wrong with it. I've personally driven it and for me, it's one of the bests in it's respective category.
  • HKB Dec 27 2011 @ 02:31pm
Jon go for Toyota avanza as this common because of durability and efficiency, this is a good choice because of its performance, don't waste your hard earn money.......
  • dominic Dec 27 2011 @ 02:51pm
Wait for the new Rio or the CRDI VGT Accent
    • KERSMcPherson Jan 23 2012 @ 10:57am
can you fit a crib stroller in its trunk?
      • dsobreo Jan 23 2012 @ 10:10pm
yep, foldable naman po yung upuan sa likod, kaso 1.6 and 1.4 matic variant lang, sa Accent hatch naman, its much bigger than the Jazz, so expect a larger space
      • timberz Mar 02 2012 @ 09:30pm
yes the trunk can accomodatec three dead bodies hehehe, joke its very spacious
  • Kyoichi Sudo Dec 27 2011 @ 02:55pm
Jon, here are my final recommendations for your family, The Mazda 2 and the upcoming Kia Rio. Both reliable, stylish, spacious and affordable. These two are perfect for your family. Their cheap at a price and expensive at a glance
    • dominic Dec 27 2011 @ 03:00pm
Mahal yung Rio, 1.4 800k na, unless full-packed yung features. HID headlamps and foglamps ftw!
    • KERSMcPherson Jan 23 2012 @ 10:58am
if Jon is going to buy a crib and a stroller, can you fit them inside the M2? He might end up hiring an Avanza taxi and drive after it. lol

  • Fernando Amorsolo Dec 27 2011 @ 11:19pm
It's just between Avanza and Fiesta
Avanza - space, more seats, and Toyota "reliability"; DULL. Not cool. You're paying 700k but you got no flashy looks? not now.

Fiesta - Beautiful. Powerful. Just right for your family; It doesn't get as much seats as Avanza.
  • dohc_ivtec Dec 27 2011 @ 11:52pm
Antayin m na ang new avanza. Perfect for your family. Cheap and spacious. Don't get the ford fiesta. My brother had one and when i droved it. Ang pangit. May mga tumutunog sa steering. Gastos pa sa gas. IMO.
  • HyundaiBest Dec 28 2011 @ 01:02am
Kahit anong sabihin niyo, Hyundai pa din the best: Check this out
Accent, Vios, City, Fiesta, Jazz, BMW 1 Series, Mini Cooper S -- Accent padin. huh, anong panama ng lecheng Jazz at Fiesta na "class leading" kamo? Lul.

Elantra, Altis, Lancer EX, Focus, Mazda 3, Sentra, Impreza, Cruze at pinaka ala kwents na CIVIC -- Elantra, highest HP, bet na bet ang design, Mura, You get all you what paid for.

Tucson, CRV, ASX, Escape, Rav4, Tribute (meron pa ba nun?), Forester, Xtrail, Captiva -- TUCSON. Sales says it all. ha...

Santa Fe, Fortuner, Everest, trailblazer,X Series ng BMW, GLK Class ng Chedeng, Quattro ng Audi, Murano at pinaka kadiring Montero Bulok Sport -- GTV kamo? Eh 600 years ago pang nasa Hyundai yan eh!

    Ano may sasabihin pa kayo?
    • dominic Dec 28 2011 @ 02:21am
Let's be sensitive sa mga sinasabi natin kasi di yan nakakatulong.
    • Kyoichi Sudo Dec 28 2011 @ 10:04am

Nag-iisip sya, d katulad mo........

kabalbalan kasi, accent sa BMW 1 series at Mini Cooper S? Genesis Coupe sa SLK, Sesto Elemento at 458 Italia??? Ano toh labanan ng mga weak? Talagang panalo Hyundai dyan!

  • seamariner Dec 28 2011 @ 07:18am
sir, jon kung practical ka sa buhay choose the avanza. the Fiesta and aveo are good but pag dating sa mga floods lamang ang avanza dahil sa tindig nito, alalahanin mo na nag karoon na tayo ng climate changes at ang phillipines ay lagi ng binbaha.
  • iam3739 Dec 28 2011 @ 09:02am
The family who is currently shopping for a new car seems to be quite practical. The Avanza fits their bill. It is one honest car that doesn't need to impress.

Taxi? Don't mind. Makes sense that they haven't been to countries like Germany or even Singapore where they use Three Pointed Star as taxis.

I just love the Avanza not because of the looks. It's just plain simple, honest car much like the Corolla with extra two seats.
  • rockyroad Dec 28 2011 @ 10:06am
  • matmat Dec 28 2011 @ 10:19am
Sir Jon, iam3739 is right. Dont mind if maraming Toyota ay ginagawang taxi. It just really shows how reliable ang Toyota. You can also choose Vios..kahit nga yung J model lang all power na (except for side mirror). Just don't choose white color. Ok din ang Ford Fiesta sedan kasi you will still need that extra space for your kids' stuff.
  • fortis Dec 28 2011 @ 10:20am
I'll go with the Avanza. Botchi is right that your babies will not stay as babies for years so practicality wise I'll go for this Toyota MPV.

And since its a Toyota it will last longer than you'll do :)
  • Pearl Dec 28 2011 @ 11:11am
oo hyundai best panalo tlga sa line up ang hyundai compare sa iba ... pero elentra civic padin yata ako... sa hyundai tucson naman wla na ko masasabi dun tucson pdin.... saka sa line up ng sonata un tlga dabest among sa line up nila... sa santa fe naman yeah 6 speed ang santa mo 2.2 ltr but the looks medyo parang pang matanda hindi siya pansinin compare sa montero and fortuner na medyo may pag ka sporty kahit papano... sa sinabi mo naman d2 Genesis Coupe, Camaro, Mustang, SLK, 458 Italia, Lamborghini Sesto Elemento, and others -- GENESIS COUPE, wala ng iba. mukang mali ka ser d ko alam kung bobo kalang o ano eh.. baka pag genenis dala tumabi ka sa mga yan mahiya ka ser.... curious lang haha think twice
  • Kyoichi Sudo Dec 28 2011 @ 05:22pm

  • kaceike25 Dec 29 2011 @ 09:33am
    • Adelbert Dec 29 2011 @ 10:36am
I agree. We should ban HyundaiBest.
  • sef21 Dec 29 2011 @ 06:47pm
Get the Avanza. It has a high seating position making it easy for your wife to drive it. The power from the 1.5L engine is just right. The ride quality is comparable to a sedan. As for the looks, it isn't really *gly but it isn't good looking either. But based on your budget, I would say practicality is your primary consideration for getting a vehicle. Practicality is one of the Avanza's strengths.
  • dohc_ivtec Dec 29 2011 @ 07:20pm
Avanza is really pactical car.
  • John Rigor Dec 30 2011 @ 01:13am
I think the Vios J suits the letter sender's needs. I've ridden Avanzas a couple of times already, and it is cramped for me.
  • japster_13 Dec 30 2011 @ 09:45am
avanza if you plan to have more than two kids and if you need the ground clearance just don't get it in white..
  • Carfanatic Jan 11 2012 @ 06:17pm
Wait for the new Avanza this 2012. It is grown bigger and more refined than the first generation. They still share the 1.3L and 1.5L engines though.
