Powerful options: Honda Accord V6 and Subaru Legacy GT

Hi, Botchi!

I'd like to get your opinion. I know you've driven the new Subaru Legacy GT and the Honda Accord V6 based on what I've read in the magazine. And from the latest issue, I sense that you prefer the Legacy. But considering everything (performance, build quality, maintenance, fuel economy, features, etc.), which car would you rather own if you were buying and maintaining it yourself?

My heart definitely beats for the Subaru Legacy but my mind does a double take on the Honda Accord. Decisions, decisions!

Ramibel

Hi, Ramibel!

I'm glad you enjoy reading our magazine! We feel honored when readers take the time out to write back to us and give their comments, questions and suggestions.

Now, going straight to your question: would I rather buy a Honda Accord or a Subaru Legacy GT? I'd definitely go for a Legacy GT--and a station wagon at that!

Just as you mentioned, the Legacy appeals to our emotions. A car is the second biggest purchase most people will ever make in their lives. Hence, if I'm paying a lot of dosh, the car had better connect with me both in an intellectual and emotional level.

I'd put in fatter track-day spec tires (like Nitto's NTO5, Adva AD) or Bridgestone's RE-11s (but keep the stock wheels for now) plus big big brakes, an open exhaust to really hear that engine rumble, a Zero Sports induction kit, front-mount intercooler and aftermarket oil coolers for engine and transmission, an ECU reflash and I'll be scaring rice rockets all-day everyday!

Tuning and modifying is an important part of owning a car for me so it has to be the Legacy GT 2.5 Turbo. As a bonus, Motor Image Pilipinas, the authorized distributor and importer of Subarus in ASEAN and in the Philippines, looks kindly on modified Subarus. Motor Image understands that tuning and modifying is inherent to a quirky, left-field car manufacturer such as Subaru. After-sales support and service is excellent. When you buy a Subaru, you will feel like you're part of an extended family.

The Honda Accord? It's decent, competent, safe, smooth, handles well and the V6 engine with variable cylinder management is cool. But it's got zero sex appeal to me. This is my opinion, since you asked.

Cheers and keep me posted on what car you do decide to get!

  • skapunkboy01 says I see nothing special about legacy. Interior and exterior in accord is both luxurious since the exterior is form BMW. Maybe you like Subaru because it's an American car and you like to feel BIG. Peace! (16 December 2009)
  • John Martin C. Balinghasay says yes there is nothing special about the legacy; its permanent AWD and more efficient turbocharged engine with its sublime and neutral handling is nothing special as it is designed in JAPAN because it is a JAPANESE car; not like the SPECIAL ACCORD eventhough made by Honda it was designed in AMERICA for AMERICANS because there is a smaller accord designed elsewhere and the FACT that its considered to be a FULLSIZE car with its common V6 and FWD drivetrain as compared to the Legacy as a MIDSIZE car. yes there is nothing special about the Legacy. . . (17 December 2009)
  • fortis says if you are a car enthusiast even just by heart you'll pick the Subaru. Imagine the possibilities: Garrett Turbo, Greddy Intercooler, HKS intake and exhaust, HKS blow-off valve, modify the engine internals and then tune it. Baby baby baby, 400++ HP!!! If you are the type who buys cars just for the sake of using it for travelling from point A to B well the Accord is for you. (17 December 2009)
  • skapunkboy01 says hahaha! damn it! i stand corrected. Subaru is a Japanese car. I just researched it in Wikipedia after i read John's comment. My friend told me that it's an American car. I want Honda accord because of it's looks inside and out. I prefer luxury than sporty. I think turbochargers makes your car noisy because i saw a video of a Toyota Camry with TRD turbochargers in Youtube. They consider accord as an full size sedan because of it's dimensions not it's engine and drive train. Camry V6 is not considered as an full size sedan. John and Fortis show us your ride! (18 December 2009)
  • John Martin C. Balinghasay says Of course EVERYONE KNOWS that a car's dimensions determine its SIZE and not its engine configuration, I just stated the difference that the Accord is bigger than Legacy bec you commented to Sir Botchi that he "like to feel BIG". and by stating the VERY COMMON configuration of a V6 FWD drivetrain as compared to a Turbo I-4 AWD of the Legacy as you said is "nothing special". And turbocharger's dont make a car noisy, Its their exhaust system that produce noise. Learned anything yet. And Wikipedia is not a credible source for a "car enthusiast" as yourself who knows how to comment without proper knowledge. . . (18 December 2009)
  • Boy says My my what a debate we have here! (18 December 2009)
  • skapunkboy01 says I just searched if Subaru is a Japanese car. I'll show a video in youtube later where trd turbocharger is noisy. i gotta go to school now. To boy we have a debate for our public speaking 2 later and a debate for finals tomorrow! Wish me luck! ciao! (18 December 2009)
  • Wiji says skapunkboy01. Who in the world who knows about cars thinks subaru is an american car? (18 December 2009)
  • skapunkboy01 says Wiji learn English. You're not even worth to debate with. (18 December 2009)
  • john legspi says it's up to you what type of guy you are.if you are an enthusiast, you'll go w/ the all wheel drive. (18 December 2009)
  • Hans says John. I sense you like Subaru too.... I mean, I do too. For my High school documentary essay, I wrote about Subaru. I probably know more about Subaru's history than some of the Subaru salesmen/women. but you need to chill. nobody's perfect... Look at you. You wrote that the Legacy has an I-4. ehhh. wrong. it's a flat 4. world of difference there... and I'm guessing skapunkboy01 doesn't give a schmuck about Subarus. Not many people do. Not many people understand Subaru until they've owned one. OUr family owns an 04 Forester and an 08 Legacy. Awesome-er than your Accord. skapunkboy01, Subarus are awesome. Admit it. Honda never won any rally titles. or F1 titles. Nothing. Subaru won 3 rally titles. and the previous gen Legacy and Forester broke land speed records in the 90s. Subaru is special, or at least, more special than the geekiness of Honda (and Toyota, too.) Sir Botchi. I agree with all my heart. (hehehehe biased) (18 December 2009)
  • John Rigor says Yes, turbochargers can in fact make car a BIT noisy, but Subaru's turbocharged 4 engine can run smoothly and quietly because it is superbly balanced. I agree with Botchi, the Subie is the car for true car enthusiasts. (18 December 2009)
  • John Rigor says I'm sorry for the mistake I made. I was talking about Subaru's flat 4 engine. (18 December 2009)
  • John Martin C. Balinghasay says sorry about the typo about the inline 4 comment. I have known subaru's since early 90's from the justy's to the svx. so chill its a typo and am guessing it wont matter much to our punkboy here who does not know $H!t about cars. . . (18 December 2009)
  • skapunkboy01 says Chill man! are you a big fan of botchi? sorry about that. i haven't driven our Camry yet. but i really like its interior and exterior and performance. i still don't have a license yet. but next year i will have one. I just like cars by its look and HP. I want to learn more about cars. but john is arguing with me like a kid. he never understood that everyone has its own taste. Chill man. Are you not educated? (19 December 2009)
  • awwii says subaru has good performance, more solid quality and good reputation. honda has enviroment-friendly engines (as they speak) and good interior craftsmanship. but it really depends on the person on what suited him/her the better. (19 December 2009)
  • skapunkboy01 says I liked luxury cars because we had Mercedes Benz back in japan and a Camry now. so I'm used to luxury cars. i have no interest in racing. don't be mad john balinghasay. (19 December 2009)
  • Balls says I find it funny when people include their full names (19 December 2009)
  • John Martin C. Balinghasay says wow a kid! hahaha that confirms it, no wonder am "arguing like a kid" bec you are a kid! Well kid I understand perfectly well about each other's taste in their choice of cars, and I definitely respect them more if they make comments based on facts. that's the reality kid, learn it. whenever you write something take responsibility bec no matter how old you are, it will reflect your upbringing so now I rest, by the way I have no qualms with anyone here and am signed with an account so my name is in full and I find it more funny that people hide in aliases, to each his own, signing off. . . (19 December 2009)
  • Hiro Watanabe says You made a small mistake big. SO that's how you deal with it? My mistake was knowing Subaru is a American car, that's it. Can't you by just reading my comment that i didn't even include technical terms. I just said that i like the interior and exterior. Do you just want to show off your knowledge about cars? Kid? I don't get it why you talk like you were offended? Are you even Botch? Just chill men. Do you know the level of privacy in internet? that's why we use aliases or just our first name. No need to write first name second name middle initial and surname. and didn't I took responsibility about my mistake? you're just making it a issue. hahaha! chill! (19 December 2009)
  • skapunkboy01 says t**. they will use your name in facebook if you are signed in. Inom nalang tayo sa bf par. hahah! alam niyo aguirre street? (19 December 2009)
  • skapunkboy01 says to wrap up these argument. we're talking about looks. b*tch said that its got zero sex appeal to him but for me it's like a 7 of 10. don't even bother talking about technical terms again. (19 December 2009)
  • Hans says skapunkboy01. Dude. I don't have a license either. Which is why if you look at my comment, I only talk about the technical stuff. I've read tuning magazines and normal magazines. I've learned how these different technicalities affect a car. As dudes who don't get to drive awesome cars like the Legacy just yet, technicalities are all we have. The Legacy is safer because of it's ring-shaped reinforcement frame (read up on this. Subaru went to great lengths to make it very safe). It's more economical, theoretically, because it has 4 cylinders, not 6. It can be driven almost anywhere in the Philippines, mud, gravel, or sand, thanks to AWD, ground clearance permitting. It's more exclusive. It comes in estate form so the mother of the family won't complain about her shopping goods. It's sunroof is larger. And based on the looks, I almost mistook a Legacy for an Accord. Until I saw the aggresive face. Objectively, the Legacy is a safer, more enjoyable, and more practical car. The Accord is probably better to lounge in and it has an innovative ECU. that's about it. (19 December 2009)
  • Wiji says skapunkboy01 maybe you should be the one learning english because it seems you don't know the difference between right and wrong english grammar. Yeah, you're not worth debating with. You don't even know subaru is a japanese car. Oh God, you still don't have a driver's license and yet you're bragging as if you've driven so many cars? just shut the hell up. and didn't I took responsibility about my mistake? you're just making it a issue. --> Didn't I TAKE IS THE CORRECT WAY OF SAYING IT. NOW, I THINK YOU SHOULD GO BACK TO YOUR ENGLISH TEACHER AND GET MAD AT HIM/HER FOR NOT TEACHING YOU THE RIGHT WAY. (20 December 2009)
  • skapunkboy01 says haha. my first comment was i like Honda accord better than legacy. i was wrong about Subaru is a American car. Don't make it big. Everyone makes mistake. I still don't have a license because my mom won't let me. She told me that i should wait until i turn 18. I didn't brag about something. At least we have a Camry which is accord competitor that i can brag about. Chill man. Check you grammar wiji. hahaha. (20 December 2009)
  • Wiji says hahaha I don't know why you keep bragging about your camry hahahaha even my friends are laughing now hahaha (20 December 2009)
  • BOOGIECAT says I wonder why the Camry was talked about here??Don't be too much proud or brag your Camry here cause its not worth it okay!!...Oh well I pick the Legacy, looks great and its way better than the BMW 7 Series-wannabe Accord.. (20 December 2009)
  • skapunkboy01 says I'm not talking about Camry. Will you read other comments so you will understand what I'm talking about. I don't just reply on Wiji's comments. I don't know many technical things in car but i know the experience of riding a luxury car, so don't tell me to talk about technicalities. Read my first comment. I only talked about its looks then they started about the specialties of legacy because i said there is nothing special about it. I compared them in buyers guide here. (20 December 2009)
  • John Martin C. Balinghasay says there, there punkboy its ok. Hey everybody take it easy on the kid, he does not know "technicalities" but he has "experience of riding a luxury car" so he can make an informed comment in a car enthusiast site. As you have admitted you had a mistake; that of Subaru being an American car company. But you made 4 mistakes in your first comment including what i just stated, so your next mistake is saying that the legacy is "nothing special". If you compared the accord to a camry and you said that its nothing special, I would have agreed with you; but the "technical aspects" of a car is what makes it special, so saying that a car having a turbo horizontally-opposed engine with all-wheel drive is not special is like saying that a porsche isnt special, which FYI is the only other car company that produces that kind of configuration. third mistake is assuming that the legacy is bigger than the accord without knowing its dimensions. and lastly writing a comment in a car mag site without knowledge of what he is talking about. you should have just stated that you liked the accord and nothing more, but being the kid that you are thats expected from you. . .merry xmas kid (20 December 2009)
  • skapunkboy01 says we're talking about cars here. not me nor my mistakes. poisoning the well, that's a fallacy. You're attacking me so i will lose my credibility. Think man. What school are graduate? Isn't Porsche special because of it's power? Accord has VCM(Variable Cylinder management) which can make it fuel efficient and if you want to use all 6 cylinders to have more power. That's special. Accord has more power than legacy which i based from this site. I don't know about the "kits" that you guys are talking about in legacy. Can you stop talking about my mistake of Subaru as an American car. I already admitted my mistake right? What I'm really saying from the start is I like accord better than legacy because of it's looks inside and out. To shut you up. Since you corrected me that Subaru is a Japanese car. The "Feel big" statement that I said to botch is gone. okay? Isn't it what made you so mad about me? Instead of arguing with me. Why don't you teach me about technicalities? (20 December 2009)
  • skapunkboy01 says "What school are you graduate?" Correction on my recent comment. (20 December 2009)
  • John Martin C. Balinghasay says oh my the boy indeed has spunk to challenge me, (sigh) this just proves that you dont just comment without knowledge but you also read without understanding. Besides the "mistakes" wasnt I WRITING about the CARS in question in my last comment. ANY car maker can make power, boy, Porsche is special because of the handling it is capable of despite being REAR engined. the VCM from your vaunted accord is nothing bec the camry V6 can match its power and efficiency without having that feature. And I couldnt care less what you said about Mr botchi here, I commented on your assuming that the accord is bigger than legacy. Feels unfair to be taking on a kid but this is fun. . .Power isnt everything kid, you are way over your head (21 December 2009)
  • John Martin C. Balinghasay says and correction its "From what school did you graduate?" and the answer is none of your business. . .we are talking about cars here and not the persons who comments. stick to the issues boy. maybe you should ask yourself "did I study my lessons well in school so as not to sound unknowledgable in times like these?" (21 December 2009)
  • John Martin C. Balinghasay says by the way what credibility are you talking about? you have no credibility whatsoever. . . (21 December 2009)
  • skapunkboy01 says too formal. you can't persuade me that legacy is better than accord. (21 December 2009)
  • skapunkboy01 says can i ask you? in the first place why are you so mad at me? are you botch's lover? (21 December 2009)
  • John Martin C. Balinghasay says hahaha goodnight kid its been fun, hope you get your accord when you get your license. . .signing off (21 December 2009)
  • skapunkboy01 says hahaha! thanks! goodnight! (21 December 2009)
  • skapunkboy01 says jk (21 December 2009)
  • pyrex16 says I sense the grammar police watching so I might as well be careful with my comment/opinion. Haha. I find it amusing/fascinating/entertaining/interesting when bigger/larger-displacement engines are beaten or matched up by smaller ones. Just like how subaru's 2.5 liter engine almost matches up with honda's 3.5 in horsepower ratings and how the former beats the later in torque ratings. With engine specifications, I think both are equally matched. In terms of performance, I can only assume that the legacy is playing a different level on the premise that it is more sports minded than the accord. In terms of looks, well, that depends on who is looking. Beauty, after all, is subjective. When the accord was new, I fell in love with it, Just like how I fell in love with the Camry when it was. But with the legacy, I'm struggling to love it, but I really want it! (21 December 2009)
  • Wiji says skapunkboy01 you're a loser. hahaha john's right. I miss playing with kids hahahaa (21 December 2009)
  • Wiji says skapunkboy01. What school are you graduate?=)) =)) =)) =)) =)) TELL YOUR PARENTS THAT YOUR TEACHERS ARE NOT DOING THEIR JOB OF TEACHING YOU WELL =)) =)) =)) loser boy :-L (21 December 2009)
  • skapunkboy01 says I would like to clear this to all of you. I just wanted to learn more about cars but one day a "car enthusiast" got mad at me. I don't know why and he isn't answering why. Then he started talking about credibility of Wikipedia and responsibilities. What the heck? Hahaha! Read carefully. (22 December 2009)
  • skapunkboy01 says You can't post long comments here. my comment above was only the start of what I want to say. (22 December 2009)
  • skapunkboy01 says Understand what I'm saying. To clear myself; I like Accord better than Legacy because I like Accords' interior and exterior. When I said "I see nothing special about legacy" I meant the looks of it. At first I thought that Subaru is an American car because my credible friend told me. I admitted my mistake when this car enthusiast corrected me. Fortis said " If you are a type who buys cars just for the sake of using it for traveling from point A to B well the Accord is for you." Well, I'm that type of guy. I know AWD cars will have more traction than FWD and RWD cars. It doesn't matter to me. Accord is worth buying for 2M because of its generous interior with 6 airbags, navigation system and engine that has a VCM technology (Variable Cylinder Management). With this you can control how many cylinders to use. (22 December 2009)
  • skapunkboy01 says At 6 cylinder mode, it will produce its maximum power, while at 4 cylinder mode you can both produce power and fuel efficiency and at 3 cylinder mode you can really achieve fuel efficiency. A Camry V6 can't match Accords' efficiency when it's using 4 or cylinder mode. Even though I don't have a license and my own car yet, I have driven Mazda6 and Honda CR-V. So I still have the right to say these things. To Hans, what if Honda hasn't won any rally titles? Does that make Honda inferior to Subaru? To Mr. Car Enthusiast again, do you know rhetorical questions? By the way you don;t have to correct my grammar. It's still correct. Can you now answer why you are mad at me? Hahahaha! TO sum this up, different people has its own taste; don't be mad at them if they are different. If something is bad about them, why don't you teach him the right and not getting mad at him? If you disagree, tell them the polite way. Now tell me about upbringing Mr. Car Enthusiast? (22 December 2009)
  • altec says hay naku anu bayan!! (22 December 2009)
  • Manny says Hi, Botchi! I'd like to get your opinion on what is the best 4x4 and 4x2 AT locally assembled pick up truck out there. This is based on performance and resale value. Your thoughts on the Nissan Navarra? I would apprecaite your advise. Thanks, Manny (22 December 2009)
  • Hans says hey punkboy. I'm sorry, but I wasn't implying anything.... except maybe the Subaru knows how to make proper cars that do what a car should do... very well. Honda does a car that serves its purpose. Subaru goes that extra mile. Maybe just that. :> and also, so what if you're "just" learning? Unless you have intentions of going on a vocational course for a mechanic or something, it shouldn't matter. The other car enthusiasts here, including me, didn't learn everything from other people. Learn to research in your free time about car things instead of going ahead and arguing with car enthusiasts about things you know nothing about (compared to them, or us, anyway) I'm guessing you're about my age? Dude, I learned most things on my own. Read up before you discuss these things. There's a lot to learn. You cannot say the Accord is better than the Legacy based on its face and its space. This is a car mag's site. We talk of deeper specs than what your tita next door looks for. We aren't babaw people here, dude. The Camry you have is a great leather-faux wood-padded box. The Accord is a more focused leather-silver trim-box. And the Legacy, as most of the enthusiasts agree, is a downright awesome CAR. (22 December 2009)
  • skapunkboy01 says haha. no prob Hans. It's just my opinion that accord is better. It's anyone's choice what's better. Thanks for the advice or whatever you call it! Be always like that! Boohoo to John A.K.A Mr.Enthusiast. (22 December 2009)
  • Wiji says well said hans! (22 December 2009)
  • skapunkboy01 says what do you think am I doing here? I'm reading right? I think most of you here have interest in racing so you like those supercharged engine and AWD drivetrain. Don't make this site exclusive for Car Enthusiast only. Hans, have wiji contributed anything in what we're talking about? Hahaha! (23 December 2009)
  • Hans says punkboy. Stop fighting others. For crying out loud. Pasko na dude. It's not racing we're interested in per se. It's just that Subaru is better at it than Honda. haha! Look at our qualifications. only what I mentioned about Subaru knowing how to build better cars has anything to do with racing. Other than that, it's all about the things that will concern your average motorist. And we're not making topgear.com.ph an exclusive site for car enthusiasts. It just so happens that the car world is a lonely place to be. Not many people understand us. SOOO... yeah. I think what everyone was just trying to tell you is don't come to a car site pretending to be an expert. (and admit it, look over what you've typed, you did.) this page happens to be full of car-enthusiasts (and Subaru fans at that, who TGP said in their magazine, are fiercely loyal to the brand). Don't try to pretend. If you don't know much, then you don't know much. Just say it. No need to pretend. We can tell. Just my piece of advice. Merry Christmas. :> (24 December 2009)
  • skapunkboy01 says I'm just defending myself. John started it then wiji the i dont know person. SAWSAW? John got mad because I type as if I were an expert? I just said (which is my opinion) that accord is better than legacy. shoot! Why do I pretend when I typed in that I want to learn? Think. Read men. Maybe it's you? WHo are you to tell that subaru are better than honda? you're just a reader? maybe most of you like legacy but that doesn't mean that they're better than honda. it's hasty generalization. read and understand better. It's not only you I'm talking to/about. Stop putting yourself too much into it. Merry Christmas too! Try central's new drinks. soco and squeeze me shake! Let's just stop talking about my mistake so this would stop and not make it bigger? how is it? (24 December 2009)
  • Hans says What gives me, personally, the right? Our family has two Subarus and we've been through many many Hondas. I think I like ou Subarus more. :> (25 December 2009)
  • skapunkboy01 says show us your Subarus and your many many hondas. (25 December 2009)
  • erick says wow may show pala dito (29 December 2009)
  • Joseph says the legacy was designed to compete against the likes of the camry and the accord. Even if the turbocharged engine is noisy, sound insulations will prevent you from being disturbed by the noise. This is the best of both worlds. (01 January 2010)
  • Hans says Our Hondas have been sold. one kept on breaking down, the other one was an office car we had to give up, the other one drank too much fuel.... So the only one with us now is an office unit. The Subarus are still here. Look around you man. So many Subaru owners that keep their cars. Look on the streets enough. You might see ours one day. :> (03 January 2010)
  • Hans says Oh and skapunkboy01, look around the papers and the Top Gear site. The new Legacy won the car of the year. Sure it's probably a bit biased since Subaru won it last year too, but an award is an award. They don't award cars by drawing lots. They scrutinize these cars. The Legacy won. And so did other Subarus since the year they arrived. 'nuff said. :) (03 January 2010)
  • skapunkboy01 says Ah. The solution for that is buy brand new cars. Buy the latest models in HONDA SHOWROOMS. Stop buying second hand cars and not casa maintained Hondas. Hahaha. Now, to rebut your statement above, how often do you see Camry/Accord than Legacy? Legacy have won awards but what most upper middle class people buy? Isn't Camry/Accord? Don't say because of the price, we know that both of them are a little bit more expensive than the Legacy. About 22k pesos more for the Camry and 2k pesos more for the Accord. Enough said. (06 January 2010)
  • skapunkboy01 says no one to debate with anymore? (23 January 2010)
  • ramibel says thanks botchi. i kind'a figured the legacy would be your choice. it was mine, too, from the start. just needed to reinforce what i already knew. am getting my black legacy sedan in two to three weeks (sorry, am partial to sedans). its a fair substitute for my dream car - an audi RS4 - at a bargain price. i drive to work mostly at NLEX anyway, so its perfect for me. i'll probably leave off the mods for now, at least until the warranty expires. chip upgrade, new exhaust, 19" mags with 245/35-19 tires, lowering springs (?) . . . it will give me something to look forward to when the new car novelty wears off. :-) p.s. ariel de jesus of motor image is my 1st cousin.
