The futuristic supercar you see here isn't a real automobile. It's a virtual one, Mercedes-Benz's gift to those who will play the upcoming Gran Turismo 6 video game. Called the Mercedes-Benz AMG Vision Gran Turismo, this car is the German automaker's contribution to the latest edition of the popular driving-simulation video game for the PlayStation console. It will be officially presented tomorrow, November 19, at the opening of the new Mercedes-Benz Research and Development Center in Sunnyvale, California.
This year is the 15th anniversary of the Gran Turismo series, so the game's producer, Kazunori Yamauchi, asked various car manufacturers to design virtual cars using the theme "Vision Gran Turismo." These virtual cars will be introduced in Gran Turismo 6 via online updates.
"By virtue of its proportions and expressive appearance, the Mercedes-Benz AMG Vision Gran Turismo embodies the brand's defining design philosophy of sensual purity in a unique way," said Daimler AG design vice president Gorden Wagener. "The design of this concept car reflects to extreme effect the perfect symbiosis between emotional, sensuous contours and intelligently presented high technology."
And even if this is just a virtual car, Mercedes-Benz actually provided technical specifications. Apparently, this car is equipped with a V8 biturbo engine that produces 585hp and 800Nm, and it boasts an aluminum space-frame body that makes possible an overall weight of just 1,385kg. Which means the power-to-weight ratio is an incredible 1hp per 2.4kg.
Well, this is some consolation after the announcement that the SLS AMG will soon be retired.
