Refreshed Toyota 86 Tomica scale model

When a highly desirable Japanese car is released, expect Tomica to come up with the little replica soon after. The toymaker released the Toyota 86 in silver (the limited color) and red in Japan sometime in the middle of 2012, following the launch of the real sports car.

The 86 was then launched in the Philippines in June 2012, with the toy car versions following about two months later. Soon after, other versions were also made available here, such as the Black Edition, the orange Tomica Limited, and the Tomica Limited 86/2000GT set. These miniatures were instant sellers, and are highly collectible.

However, we weren't expecting a toy car of the refreshed 86, which was released in Japan just last month. Toy car companies normally don't come up with updated versions, as altering an existing casting takes a lot of effort. This is the first time a Tomica “Regular Box” refreshed model is sold worldwide. The toymaker had released a few facelifted models in the past, but only for Japan and usually in a box set.

The new Tomica 86 comes in orange as the limited color and white as the regular one. The release here is on time as the updated 86 was just unveiled (and will be featured in our October 2016 issue).

You'll take pleasure in looking at the new casting closely, with the wider air intake, more aggressive chin, redesigned foglamp bezels, the new side gills, and the 86 logo on the mid-section of the fender.

The rear, meanwhile, sports the new taillights and spoiler, along with slightly longer exhaust tips. Tomica even added the shark-fin antenna. We have photos of the old and new side by side to compare both versions.

We've seen the new pair in selected Toys 'R' Us stores. We suggest you score them quickly as they will sell fast, particularly the orange once since it only comes as a first batch and its value is set to escalate. To give you an idea how much the first batch color can go for, the pre-facelifted silver now costs about P1,000 to P1,200. That's more expensive than the special black and the TL versions. Don't say we didn't warn you.
