Mitsubishi Motors Philippines' numbers up for 5th straight year

Mitsubishi Montero Sport

In spite of the challenges to the auto industry last year largely brought about by the earthquake and tsunami in Japan and then the massive flooding in Thailand, Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corporation still managed to chalk up a higher overall sales tally compared to 2010--albeit by a very minuscule increment.

For 2011, MMPC sold a total of 32,603 units, up one percent from its 32,422 total the previous year. According to the company, that translates to 20 percent of the market, although we're not sure whether it's 20 percent of the total sales of just the members of the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines, of which Mitsubishi is a member. The likes of Hyundai, Chevrolet and Subaru are non-CAMPI members.

Still, even if we include the sales of Hyundai, Mitsubishi still moved the second-most number of units, next only to Toyota. Last year also marked the fifth consecutive time that MMPC registered growth in sales volume and market share since 2006.

Mainly responsible for this, according to Mitsubishi, were its light commercial vehicles, whose sales increased by 2.5 percent. Meanwhile, its Fuso trucks and buses grew by 12.7 percent. Mitsubishi credits the growth in its LCV sales to the Strada, the Montero Sport, the ASX, the Pajero, the Adventure and the L300. The combined sales of the Montero Sport and the Pajero topped the SUV segment with 12,210 units, while the Strada was the leading double-cab pickup with 4,216 units.

For 2012, MMPC is targeting a growth of 12 percent (36,500 units) compared to its 2011 sales performance. The increase is expected to come from model enhancements and new products. In particular, MMPC expects to improve its passenger car sales with the introduction of the subcompact Mirage hatchback (below). The Mirage is being counted upon by MMPC to easily gain market acceptance considering its outstanding fuel economy and class-leading features.

To top it off, Mitsubishi is looking at expanding its sales network with the addition of three new outlets in strategic growth areas, bringing its total number of dealerships to 49.

"This year, MMPC is not only geared for achieving its projected sales volume, but is also dedicated in improving its after-sales and customer service," said Hikosaburo Shibata, MMPC president and CEO. "MMPC will continue to bring in more vehicles that will respond to the Filipino market's need for a quality vehicle for every lifestyle."

let's tee off then ..... the mitsubishi montero brags about a well cushioned ride in addition to this the latest iteration in it's interior makes it a compelling choice to buy, but is this enough to entice the market even more.... on the otherside of this continent the korean's proved their worth inthe auto industry by offering powerful engine impregnated in their technology but somehow the sta. fe's appeal is starting to dwindle as new looks in the exterior design is becoming a silent protest to some who still have a snag in finalizing their choice... who then will stand their ground firm im this much anticipated battle between the montero and the sta fe?

Congratulations Mitsubishi Philippines.

guys the article is not about mitsubishi leading the sales vs toyota or hyundai or whosoever... instead the article implies that mitsubishi philippines did manage to slate an increment vs it's 2010 fiscal year. so the figures aren't moot that more are patronizing mitsubishi in the country instead it has just proven a steafy share of the market. it would require no less than 15% growth to have an argument of invrease in productivity/sales. how would i know this? coz this is my forte guys , studying figures to promote growth relative to synchronic and diachronic circumstance (time and space) . so what is the figure telling us? that mitsubishi phils. should foment a system to keep up with its marketshare perhaps by introducing new product lines which hopefully will equal if not exceed the competition.

TO the one who started this thread: Sorry but I have to say this.

Wag kang maghugas kamay na wag magtalo ang mga tao eh ikaw ang unang nag post on this thread about that STUPID COMPARO BETWEEN A MONOCOQUE CUV and A TRUCK-BASED SUV. THEY ARE DIFFERENT FROM EACH OTHER.

For the last note, MS is for Fortuner, Everest, Trailblazer and Alterra.
SF is for Sorento, and other premium CUVs.

any car suv or cuv for that matter can be compared from each other. the word comparo directly means comparison. and no such argumentative value in saying one cant be compared from the other . more so when both are still called suvs. saying a ms cant be compared to a sta fe is tantamount to saying that filipinos cant be compared to americans, such preposition will not stand. it is therefore and will
mever be a fallacy to conduct a comparo on two contesting subjects be it fore rational sentient living oraterial substance . the point in question is the value of one product relative to its features and benefits. lest one wanted to escape the circle of argument by using semantics as an excuse.

In relation to last year commentary (see below).

I would like to share my problem.
I hope Mitsubishi higher management would listen & accommodate my concern & request...
TopGear if you could assist me, i will appreciate it.

I am a owner of a brand new less than 1 year old Montero Sport 2x4 that i purchased last April 6, 2011.
I had encountered multiple Jerking and Engine Stalling.
My unit is in & out of the service center (dealer Diamond Motor Marcos Highway) and Mitsubishi Plant.
2X my unit was checked/repaired and they said it was fixed but after a few weeks, the engine stalling will happen again.
My unit is still with Diamond Motors / Mitsubishi checking/investigating the cause of the engine stalling.
For me, what they are doing is trial and error.... if they have an idea of the problem, my unit should be fixed on the first and second repair.

Scared and worried on the safety of my family & passengers, i made my first request (last december 2011) to Mitsubishi and Diamond Motors to replace my unit.
To think the unit is less than 1 year old, first i expected they will approved it.
"they did not approved it". because they said the unit is already fixed, they even gave me a certification/a gurantee letter that my unit is in perfect condition and safe to drive. (December 2011 before Christmas)

After a week (first week of January 2012)i encountered engine stalling on the way down from the parking area at parksquare makati (i almost had an accident), I also encountered the stalling while driving in Makati Ave.

Until now my unit is still with Diamond Motors Marcos Highway & MMPC.

I am still waiting for their reply on my third request if they will replace it.

    Additional info...
I also learned their are 1 or 2 other owners of a brand new less than 1 year old Montero Sport with the same problem.

Feel free to share your suggestions...

    Alexander Flores

    COMMENTARY
    Unintended consequences

THE MONTERO case stresses the need for a well-equipped testing agency like the NHTSA.
It is the most frightening scenario for a motorist—not being able to stop one’s vehicle. Stalling or not being able to start one’s car can be a mere inconvenience, or dangerous if one is on a highway, but an uncontrollable surge in a vehicle’s speed will almost inevitably lead to property damage, injury, or death. Being unable to stop usually means brake failure, but in a few cases it means a runaway vehicle—a car that keeps accelerating, popularly known as unintended acceleration (UA).
Recently, the Mitsubishi Montero Sport has been the subject of complaints of UA. A blog has been put up by one owner, relating his own incident with the Montero Sport, as well as several other purported complaints.
Mitusbishi Motors Philippines Corp.’s (MMPC) official reply: “Upon receiving these complaints on unintended acceleration, Mitsubishi Motors Corp. (MMC) Japan, dispatched its engineers last February to investigate the claim. The investigation yielded that all the components (Fuel Injection system, Pedal, Engine Control Unit or ECU, Wiring harness, etc.) and software are operating normally within specifications. MMC will also investigate the latest reported cases of unintended acceleration claims.
“In addition, we would like to note that the electronic throttle system of the Montero Sport has undergone extensive testing not only during its development but also during mass production to ensure that it will function the way it was designed to.”
If you are a Montero Sport owner and in any way bothered by these “Montero Sudden Acceleration” Internet blogs, you may bring your vehicle to any Mitsubishi Motors service center nationwide for a free checkup. Meantime, we also encourage every owner/driver to read the owner’s manual as there are important reminders on the proper driving procedures most especially for automatic transmission vehicles (please see http://www.mitsubishi-motors.com.ph/ safety-reminders.php).
“MMPC would like to assure the public that every vehicle developed by MMC and its components undergo extensive testing and are of the highest quality level and that we are committed to your utmost satisfaction and safety.”
Is there any foundation to these complaints of UA? It’s worth reading the findings of the largest study of UA conducted, by the US government agency National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The study was initiated in 2010 after complaints of UA in Toyota vehicles.
The conclusion is that there are several causes of UA. The first and most common is driver error-stepping on the accelerator instead of the brake pedal as intended. Second is a physical cause that causes the accelerator to get stuck. Commonly cited are ill-fitting floor mats that trap the pedal, or a “sticky pedal” that does not return to the idle position when released. The former cause—floor mats—was the cause of a well-publicized high-speed crash in San Diego involving a Lexus vehicle. The second, sticky accelerator pedals, was the subject of the unprecedented recall of nine million vehicles by Toyota.
Then there is the vehicle-based cause, where the throttle valve, the primary control for engine speed, can get stuck open regardless of the pedal position. This is possible when the throttle is electronically controlled. The throttle valve is controlled by a motor taking instructions from a computer.
NHTSA enlisted the help of NASA scientists for the ten-month study to scrutinize Toyota’s electronic throttle system, the suspected culprit in UA. The study concluded that there was “no electronic cause of UA incidents involving large throttle openings and no reason to believe that any failure of the Electronic Throttle Control system would affect a vehicle’s braking system.”
In conclusion, NHTSA stated that “these types of complaints generally do not appear to involve vehicle-based causes and that, where the complaint included allegations that the brakes were ineffective or that the incident began with a brake application, the most likely cause of the acceleration was actually pedal misapplication (i.e, the driver’s unintended application of the accelerator rather than, or in addition to, the brake.)”
Does this mean that the Mitsubishi Montero Sport is exonerated? It would be difficult to conclude that based solely on the Toyota case, but the study does make the claim of vehicle-caused UA improbable. As we have no agency that is as well-equipped as NHTSA to investigate these claims, they will likely remain as such—inconclusive claims.
Should the motoring public be concerned about unintended acceleration? Certainly, but we should look at physical causes rather than be worried that our vehicle might lurch forward on its own due to a stuck throttle.
Make sure your floor mats cannot trap your accelerator pedal. Ideally there should be a peg or hook holding the mat so it cannot slide forward towards the pedals. Be aware of your vehicle’s operating instructions. It’s useful to remember that a car’s brake system, operating properly, can always overpower its engine. Use the brakes—at full force, when necessary. Shift to neutral if the engine starts revving uncontrollably. If your car uses an engine start-stop button, particularly a keyless type, know how to shut it down.
As for manufacturers, there is always room to improve safety. Floor mats with a safety hook should be standard, as should a shift lock for automatic transmissions. Many new vehicles still allow starting without the driver stepping on the brake pedal, allow starting in Neutral instead of Park, and allow shifting from Park without stepping on the brake pedal. Lack of such safety features will allow unintended acceleration due to driver error. And that can have serious consequences for life and limb.

Kyoichi Sudo, I am very proud to buy and owned a Montero Sport.
Why buy a 1.4M unit if i do not like it.
But the issue is Safety... my unit has a lot of problem, at first Jerking then Engine Stalling.
If you are in my situation, I am sure you will not be happy.

If you ask me to choose between Fortuner or Montero I will still choose Montero Sport.
"A Montero Sport that is safe to drive".

This kind of problem should be shared so MMPC would improve it units and their after sales.
