The Ford Fiesta is a fun-to-drive little car, but it’s the hatch's ST variant that enthusiasts are dreaming about. With the recent unveiling of the new-generation Euro-spec Fiesta, we knew the latest version of the Fiesta ST was just around the corner.
Meet the all-new Ford Fiesta ST with new styling and more important, a new motor--but more on that later. At first glance that Liquid Blue Ford Performance paint color lets you know this is no normal Fiesta. Up front it gets a sporty upper and lower honeycomb grille and aggressive fascia with glossy gray lower bumper panels. Side skirts, a rear diffuser, a larger rear spoiler, and snazzy looking 18-inch alloy wheels shod with 205/40ZR18 rubber complete the hot-hatch transformation. Inside it gets an ST-badged flat-bottomed steering wheel, Recaro sports seats and gauges with red needles. The steering wheel, gear lever, door pulls and dashboard trim can be personalized as well.
Now for the big news: Replacing the old 1.6-liter turbo four lump is an all-new 1.5-liter turbocharged EcoBoost mill with three cylinders. That’s not a typo. This 3-pot motor features both port fuel injection and direct injection just like the GT supercar. It produces 197hp and 290Nm of torque, and can sprint to 100kph in only 6.7 seconds. For those curious, these figures are similar to those of the limited-run Fiesta ST200 unveiled last year. To improve fuel efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions, cylinder deactivation shuts down one of its cylinders when cruising or coasting.
It gets a Ford Performance-tuned suspension and standard torque vectoring control for improved handling. The driver can also select between Normal, Sport, and Track drive modes, which adjust engine, steering and stability controls as well as tweak the car’s Electronic Sound Enhancement technology and active exhaust noise control valve to make it sound sportier.
In terms of on-board tech, the ST inherits the upgrades of its tamer siblings. This includes an Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatible SYNC 3 infotainment system with an 8-inch touchscreen and a premium B&O Play audio system.
The all-new third-gen Fiesta ST will be offered in both 3-door and 5-door body styles. It should reach European showrooms early next year. We’re still hoping Ford Philippines will make this attractive hot hatch available here.
