All-new Mazda MX-5

It's official: Mazda Philippines president and CEO Steven Tan told TopGear.com.ph that the all-new, fourth-generation MX-5 roadster is arriving on our shores in July. The company has just displayed the car at the just-concluded 2015 Manila International Motor Show, but the unit that made it to the event was a right-hand-drive unit. And so the formal entry of the Philippine-spec MX-5 units is sort of a big deal to the carmaker.

"We will introduce the 2.0-liter Skyactiv engine, paired with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission," shared Tan. "The manual transmission will cost under P1.8 million, while the automatic transmission will sell for under P2.0 million."

Tan noted that they would only be able to determine the final pricing once the units arrive.

According to the executive, members of the Miata Club Philippines will again have first dibs on the first batch of units--just like they did last year when Mazda Philippines imported 25 units of the Miata 25th Anniversary Edition.

"They (the club) have been very supportive of and loyal to the nameplate," Tan said, adding that the Philippine market may actually get the much-awaited roadster ahead of the US market.

If you're interested in this car, we suggest you file a reservation with a Mazda dealer this early. This MX-5 has the makings of a hotcake, if social-media feedback is anything to go by.

Meanwhile, you may scratch the itch by watching our exclusive test-drive video, or by getting a copy of our April 2015 issue (the all-new MX-5 is on the cover).
