Mercedes-Maybach S600 Pullman Guard

Last February, Mercedes-Maybach came out with the S600 Guard. That stately sedan, you might recall, was practically a luxury tank for heads of state who need a bit more protection against coup plotters.

But if such opulence isn’t enough, the German luxury brand puts forward its newest flagship limousine: the Mercedes-Maybach S600 Pullman Guard. If the name sounds familiar, that's because it's the same chariot that has ferried many dignitaries and world leaders around for decades. That list of prominent figures includes the late Philippine president, Ferdinand Marcos.

The new S600 Pullman Guard, as the name suggests, is a longer version of the S600. The 6,500mm length allows occupants to stretch out in total comfort and luxury.

With the Guard moniker, VIPs are guaranteed the highest levels of protection. This essentially includes ERV 2010 levels of blast protection and VR9 class safety against armor-piercing bullets and the like. The windows are reinforced with polycarbonate, and laminated to guard against splinters and shattering. These are usually the first targets of would-be assassins, so this should provide extra peace of mind.

Moreover, there is a special steel bulkhead strategically placed behind the seats for added protection. This goes beyond the usual glass-only protection that most limos offer. Finally, the doors themselves—as with the rest of the body—are coated with aramid to make them truly safe from splinters, blasts, and other forms of attack.

However, all this armor comes at the cost of added weight. To ensure that the roughly 5,100kg of Benz is carried around gracefully, the car is equipped with a twin-turbo V12 engine and electric motor assists for the doors. This makes it easier to open and shut them, despite the vehicle's armor-laden mass.

And of course, occupants can revel in luxury while riding. Four people can sit face-to-face to discuss matters of state while on the road. Mercedes-Maybach will even fit the car with all the options desired upon order. And for a car that costs around 1.4 million (P75.85 million), we would expect nothing less.

Wealthy and security conscious buyers of the Mercedes-Maybach S600 Pullman Guard can take delivery of their tank limo beginning in the second half of 2017.
