After numerous supposedly leaked photos of the all-new Subaru WRX STI were posted on various websites, the Japanese carmaker has finally released not just the official photos but also the specifications of its latest flagship performance model.
Though Subaru fails to mention it, the all-new WRX STI is still based on the current-generation Impreza, much like its predecessors before it. A bolder frontal design, starting with the blacked-out hexagonal grille and narrow LED headlights, gives the car an aggressive on-road presence. The latest model also sports a functional hood scoop that's set more deeply into the aluminum hood, providing for better forward visibility and reducing the weight over the car's front. A full aerodynamic body package includes a large trunk-mounted spoiler--which has been a WRX STI signature feature--while the rear diffuser, the LED taillights and the center high-mount stop lamp supposedly leave a distinctive signature.
Thanks to an inch-longer wheelbase over the previous model, the new WRX STI has a roomier cabin, with the rear seat legroom increasing by nearly two inches. A steeply raked windshield emphasizes the car’s sportiness, while the narrower A-pillars, which were supposedly moved forward by eight inches, provide for better forward visibility. Even the new car’s trunk capacity is slightly bigger at 340L with the 60/40-split rear seats increasing its cargo-carrying capacity even further. The car's seats are covered with Alcantara with red and black leather bolsters and red stitching, while for the first time, the driver gets a motorsports-inspired flat-bottom steering wheel.
Propelling all four wheels of the car is a 2.5-liter turbocharged flat-four engine that churns out 305hp and 393Nm of torque. Mated to it is a specially reinforced six-speed manual transmission. In addition, the carmaker's now-familiar Subaru Intelligent Drive powertrain management system lets the driver tailor the car’s driving characteristics by choosing from Intelligent, Sport and Sport Sharp modes to alter the vehicle's performance characteristics by regulating the engine control module and by fine-tuning the electronic throttle control system.
Additional new toys for the all-new WRX STI are active torque vectoring system, multi-mode driver-controlled center differential system, multi-mode vehicle dynamics control, and a Brembo performance brake system with Super Sport ABS.
The United States market will get a WRX STI Launch Edition that's limited to 1,000 units and equipped with WR Blue paint, gold BBS forged alloy wheels and unique interior trim.
As we reported in October, Motor Image big boss Glenn Tan revealed to TopGear.com.ph that the all-new WRX STI will be launched in the Philippine market at the 2014 Manila International Auto Show. Motor Image is the official distributor of Subaru vehicles in the Southeast Asian region.
