Mazda has announced that it will be displaying a new concept compact hatchback at the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show in Japan later this month.

The company says that the vehicle "fuses next-generation technology and design," and will be powered by the brand's much-hyped Skyactiv-X drivetrain. "Dynamic performance has been dramatically refined and next-generation design condensed to create Mazda’s ideal compact hatchback."

Key words: 'next-generation' and 'compact hatchback.' Could this be the new iteration of the Mazda 3? It's very possible, we think. If the answer is yes, this could be very big news as the vehicle would be the first mass market model equipped with a gasoline engine using compression ignition. But it's all speculation for now, so you'll have to wait until after this year's Tokyo Motor Show to find out.

“Our stand this year marks the beginning of a new era for Mazda. We will showcase a concept model with the design and technologies that will define a whole new generation of Mazda cars," says Mazda head Masamichi Kogai. "Among them is Skyactiv-X, a gasoline engine that realizes a long-held dream of the global automotive industry."

The next-generation 'design vision' concept is also set to make an appearance at the show, which Mazda says will build further upon its signature Kodo design language first seen in the 2012 CX-5. What else to look forward to? The three-row Mazda CX-8 will be in attendance, as will a special edition MX-5 with a dark cherry red top. Excited?
