We're not making excuses for missing this news, especially as the official announcement has been sitting in our mailbox since the third week of February. But see, with the amount of letters and press statements that find their way into our digital pigeonholes, an item or two are bound to escape our attention. This is one of them.
Here's the first thing you need to know: Whereas the Polo sedan is powered by a 1.6-liter common-rail diesel engine, the Polo Hatchback is equipped with a 1.6-liter four-cylinder MPI gasoline powerplant rated at 104hp and 153Nm. And while the Polo sedan has a five-speed manual transmission, the Polo hatch has a six-speed automatic gearbox.
And here's the second thing you need to be told about the German subcompact hatchback: It costs exactly the same as its diesel sedan sibling--P950,000.
"The Polo Hatchback is indeed a perfect combination of quality and driving pleasure, and is expected to be one of our volume sellers," said Volkswagen Philippines president and CEO John Philip Orbeta in a statement. "Now in its fifth generation, the Polo Hatchback offers excellent levels of comfort, functionality, reliability and long-term quality."
The Philippine-market Polo Hatchback--available in Copper Orange, Candy White, Night Blue Metallic, Flash Red and Carbon Steel Gray--has ventilated disc brakes in front and drum brakes at the rear, as well as 15-inch wheels wrapped in 185/60 rubber.
Standard features include halogen headlights; headlight-range adjustment; front fog lamps; heat-insulating windshield; power side mirrors; heated rear window; multifunction display for the driver; CD player with radio, MP3, USB, SD card and Bluetooth; four speakers; "Livon" fabric seat material; three-spoke leather flat-bottom steering wheel with audio and phone controls; power windows; manual air-conditioning; dust and pollen filter; front airbags; antilock brakes; rear parking sensors; anti-theft system with immobilizer; and 15-inch spare wheel.
Volkswagen Philippines also mentioned an "attractive financing package and a P95,000 down-payment scheme," so be sure to ask about this when you visit a VW showroom to inquire about this car.
For fans of Volkswagen hatchbacks who are drooling over the newly launched Golf GTI but find its price too prohibitive, you can't go wrong by starting with the Polo Hatchback. Go check it out.
