Chevrolet Cruze marks Philippine debut

TopGear.com.ph Car News - Chevrolet Cruze photo

The Covenant Car Co. has launched its maiden offering as the new and exclusive distributor of Chevrolet vehicles in the Philippines: the Chevrolet Cruze.

The Chevrolet Cruze is a four-door sedan packed with a 1.8-liter all-aluminum engine that puts out 141hp and 176Nm of torque. Helping translate that power on to the front wheels are either a five-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic transmission--a segment first for Chevrolet.

"We made sure that the Cruze can stand toe-to-toe with its competitors," said Covenant managing director and chief operating officer Atty. Alberto Arcilla. "It's the biggest one in its class, both inside and outside, and it's packed with features that aren't standard for its class. We also made sure that it's priced competitively just so that there will be a Cruze for every Juan dela Cruz."

The manual tranny-equipped Chevrolet Cruze L and LS variants are priced at P808,888 and P858,888, respectively; while the automatic LS and range-topping LT are at P908,888 and P1.048 million.

The Chevrolet Cruze's arching roofline resembles that of a coupe. Serving to enhance this sporty profile is the Cruze's well-planted, close-to-the-ground stance as the wheels are located at the outer edges of its bodywork.

The Cruze also sports Chevrolet's distinct dual-port grille, and in combination with the sweeping headlights and its distinct concave shoulder line, it gives the vehicle a very aggressive appearance.

Inside, the cabin carries the sporty yet sophisticated design of the exterior as it adopts the signature twin-cockpit layout of its sport car sibling, the Corvette, to bring both the driver and the passenger closer to a "shared" experience.

Kawawang Chevrolet. Sana naman turbocharged yung 1.8L at the same price. Sana rin bukod ang headlamps nila for hi and low beams pero ganoon parin ang shape para mas maganda.

the cruze. what's this the next optra or optra will still be here? so this wlii be the new rival of lancer EX, altis and civic.the chevrolet should bring a 2.0L engine and a sporty exterior to totally be the worse rival of the legendary lancer EX.i don't know if toyota really knows what they're doing or if they're really st*p*d. why don't they put a 2.0L engine on the altis E and G so they can beat the lancer EX.
  • goldcrow Feb 27 2010 @ 11:25am Report Abuse

@JMM, I believe the Cruze is due to replace the Optra which is quite horrible but the price made it attractive. To answer your question, Toyota does not need to put the 2.0 dual vvti engines on the E and G models since it only sacrifices fuel economy for a bit of performance. Who can utilize the big displacement if our roads are traffic-infested anyway? Sure, the Lancer EX is nice and sporty and all that with its 2.0 throughout the whole range but that category's just a small part of the compact car market anyway. And as far as I've observed, the new Altis beats the Lancer EX in sales so I don't see your point.
  • Juan Miguel Mendoza Feb 27 2010 @ 11:45am Report Abuse

@ goldcrow, my point is, its ok for me if they don't put the 2.0L on te E variant but if they don't put it in the G, lancer EX will still gonna have more sales when it comes at 2.0L engines. i see more lancer EX GLX, MX and GT-A on the roads than the 2.0V of the altis. i think i just saw 2 or 4 2.0V altis' on the road and 27 or 29 GLX, 24 or 30 MX and 32 or 34 GT-A on the road. this year or next year we're gonna buy a new vehicle and one of our choices is the lancer EX GT-A. there is NO ALTIS on our choices. only the hilux E 4x2. all of our choices are mitsu except for the hilux and the d-max. strada 2.5L GLS, montero sport 3.2L GLS S.E, RVR, outlander(the evolution front) and the lan EX GT-A as i said ealier. those ar our choices in mitsu.

bring out the 2.0 VCDI(Next-Generation Commonrail Diesel w/ Variable Geometry Tubo and Intercooler)Cruze! paglumabas yan... patas na ang laban sa Ford Focus. Tamang tama, the new focus will be available sa 2012.
  • KRAM Feb 27 2010 @ 02:00pm Report Abuse

  • goldcrow Feb 27 2010 @ 04:49pm Report Abuse

@JMM, How remarkable, you're able to remember the number of lancers you encounter on the roads. Thing is, if you want to be objective, you gotta look at the entire market segment and not only the 2.0 category. I won't continue debating since you're preference is Mitsubishi anyway.
Back to topic, I just saw the Cruze today in Moa and the design is not bad, interior and exterior-wise.The only gripe is the brand really. The Civic's still my top pick though, and the focus tdci for the 2.0.
  • CL Feb 27 2010 @ 04:55pm Report Abuse

@JMM dapat hindi lahat 2.0,dapat hindi na nila tinangal ung 1.8 na variant dapat ginawa nlng nila binalik nila ung J para mula sa J hangang sa E na variant 1.8 liter tapos ung G at V ginawa nilang 2.0 liter tas syempre ung J gagawing taxi hehehehe ^_^ .....i told you just go for the montero sport ^_^ its the best in its class...........^_^

mas maganda pa rin ang honda civic 2010 kaya honda na lang ang bilhin ninyo i-vtec pa at tipid sa gasolina at ang ganda ng loob pare with the paddle shifter pa we own a honda city and its great very smooth i drive saya ni misis i bought as apresent last christmas for my wife very satisfied naman siya na idrive

  • jmg_32188 Feb 27 2010 @ 09:39pm Report Abuse

The Cruze's design for me (based from the pic) is a bit boring compared to other sub-compact/compact cars sold here today. As far as I can remember may nabasa akong forum na hindi daw talaga All-new yung Corolla Altis. Same Engine and Transmission daw?
  • hhhhhhhmmmmmmmmmmmmm Feb 27 2010 @ 10:33pm Report Abuse

I think Cruze will make competition for philippines compact car market. For the people who'll compare it with their chosen car, it wouldn't make any sense if you'll just say it na (its panget, ok sana kung ganito ganyan, or mas ok pa yung car na to) its not with the car, Its how you'll use it for. Buy the car that you want and what you think is best for you, otherwise they're all in the same price range. And for sure you can avail any of those compact cars.
  • BOOGIECAT Feb 28 2010 @ 02:58am Report Abuse

  • maranello_5775 Feb 28 2010 @ 10:44am Report Abuse

@jmg_32188, the 2nd gen city didn't have paddle shifters, its just a tiptronic for the 7th speed...paddleshifters are the paddles fitted behind the steering wheel the ones you are pertaining to are the pushbutton shifter ala porsche "tip"tronic fitted on the steering wheel.BTW, I hope the VCDi powered cruze makes its way to our shores
  • keithdb Feb 28 2010 @ 12:31pm Report Abuse

Now where is hmmm when you need his comments. Back to topic pricewise and features wise, the cruze is competitive. Also, the 1.8 is good enough for our roads especially here in Metro Manila where its heavy traffic most of the time.

Now back to teh topic.
  • Rem Feb 28 2010 @ 03:33pm Report Abuse

@BOB , base sa mga nabasa ko po sa Internet eh mas madami pa po yung innovations nila like sa Lancer EX yung MCA-JET (MCA stands for Mitsubishi Clean Air) system instead of carburetor and Silent Shaft technology na wala pa sa Corolla dati. Kaya napasa niya yung Japan and U.S emission standards. Tska hindi po ni release ang Fuzion to compete with Innova kaya Adventure pa rin ang kalaban niya. Pinalitan lang kasi ng Innova ang Revo.

  • BOOGIECAT Feb 28 2010 @ 09:32pm Report Abuse

medyo may tama ka rem. just don't mind h........m............ and bob. they're just wasting they're time protecting th altis. of course, altis is the best selling sedan. BUT there's a big but there its because toyota is the most famous car brand. but if toyota is not famous honda civic will be the best seller sedan followed by the legendary Lancer EX but of course the last one will be the altis if toyota is not famous. back to topic. i think this cruze will be the next altis in the compact sedan category. but it dosen't have the power to beat the Lan EX now that its gonna release the 2.0L mivec turbochared ralliart variant. but its gonna be a though fight for lan EX ralliart and impreza wrx sedan and hatchback. i hope mitsu phil. will release the lan EX sportback variants and ralliart and the evolution X sportback this year to have a fair fight with the impreza.

I saw an actual Cruze at MOA yesterday, and it's mean-looking! One slick bad-ass car. The kaha is very solid, di siya parang lata tulad ng iba, solid talaga. Kaya pala 5-star safety rating nya.

@southboy - I beg to differ with your opinion. For those who want to have a common, standard car with a reputation, yes, they buy the altis and/or the civic. For those who want performance and fun (and a bit of showing off), they go for the lancer and the focus diesel. the looks of the lancer is just a bonus to an already driver-oriented car.

i am not exactly confident that the cruze is a good buy. the same car is badged as a daewoo and as a holden in australia. i still think the japanese cars are more reliable, in general over chevrolets. piyesa kasi ang labanan basta pinoy market. we pinoys buy cars for keeps, not like the first world people who buy cars then discard after less than five years.

"Wow, daming features ng Nokia N97, mas mura pa. touch screen din... talo ang iPhone... langhiya, lufet!!! Miss, pabili nga ng isang iPhone 3GS (sabay baba ng hawak na N97 display)".

I have to agree, toe-to-toe the Cruze can compete, but with Toyota so ingrained in the Philippine mindset, it has a long way to go.

Walang pinagkaiba yan sa "Inday, bili mo nga ako ng 'colgate', yung Close-up ha." hehehe. Toothpaste = Colgate as Car = Toyota (at least sa Pinas).

Don;t get me wrong, Honda lover-boy ako. Am just pointing out a fact. hehe.

i dont know much about cars, but i actually think that the chevy cruze do stand a chance against its main competitors. first time i saw this was in a car exhibition and i was intrigued by it. it certainly is eye catching for me. actually it looks better in person kesa sa picture posted. nagulat ako at altis pala ang main rivals na habol netong car na ito. thought it was after the toyota camry or honda accord. i think the price is reasonable enough with the engine selections. and i do have to agree with other users, it really doesnt need to have a 2.0 engine. cause people really are after efficiency when it comes to fuel economy. and with the kind of traffic that metro manila suffers everyday. i dont think a car that goes from 0-60 in 10 seconds is really ideal. and if i am going to buy a new car i think this would make the list as one of my options. just my opinion.

I must admit, it is a lovely car. Performance and handling wise okay siya for a 1.8L sedan. medyo mabagal lang ang shifting, may delay ng 1 second, hindi instant shift. sabagay, pareho lang sila ng shifting ng honda civic 1.8s. walang masyadong roll ang body sa first turn galing straight ng short track. I will purchase cruze on august.
