Chevrolet Cruze named Philippine Car of the Year

Chevrolet Cruze

The guessing game is over. The Chevrolet Cruze, which was launched in February last year, now owns the 2010/2011 Car of the Year (COTY) title after weeks of testing and deliberation conducted by the Car Awards Group (CAGI).

"If you think about it, at its price point, it really has a lot to offer," said CAGI president Ferman Lao, who is also the technical guru of Top Gear Philippines.

Lao cited the Chevrolet Cruze's affordability--its price starts at P808,000--and features as the car's winning factors.

"It makes a good choice. It's more pro-consumer and I don't think there's another car in the local market that is relatively affordable with all the gadgets it has. It really has a lot of things going for it," he added.

The Chevrolet Cruze beat other cars in the top-five finalists, which include the Subaru Impreza (sedan), the Jaguar XF, the Mitsubishi ASX and the Hyundai Sonata. In case you're wondering, the Ford Fiesta, which seemed like the closest contender of the Cruze based on TopGear.com.ph's in-house poll, landed on sixth place in the CAGI evaluation.

Lao admits that the Cruze isn't even the fastest car in the group. It is also obviously not the most technologically-advanced vehicle in the country. But since CAGI is choosing the Car of the Year for consumers, the Cruze received the judges' thumbs-up for the value it offers.

Here's a complete list of the 2010/2011 COTY awardees.

i don't think i agree with some of the winners. Foton Blizzard beating the other pick-ups???? it shouldn't be just about how cheap it is. Murano for the premium crossover??? i have at least 3 on top of my head that can easily beat the Murano. Jaguar XF does not belong to the Midsize Car Category coz it's a Coupe.

Maybe they looked at function over form. I guess they did not take road holding, acceleration, top speed and all those crap in judging the truck.

Yes, Foton cars may be one of the best amongst Chinese cars, but we aren't talking here about Chinese cars alone, are we? I don't despise Chinese products at all but I remember having driven the blizzard for a number of times and it was OK. Just OK. To be a winner in its class, it has to stand out amongst its competitors. I am no fan of pickup trucks but the D-Max, for one, is light years ahead, not just about acceleration or handling, but refinement, fuel economy, emissions, materials, ergonomics and feel. The same goes with the MPX. I personally think that there is a van, a Korean van called the Hyundai Starex and a couple of Japanese ones one called the Nissan Urvan, Toyota Hi-Ace, Toyota Alphard which I personally find are miles better. I now start to wonder how old technology and old engineering got the better of the new ones. It isn't just about the price, is it?

I'm a member of the Car Awards Group (CAGI) that evaluates these cars. One thing I just want to point out is that CAGI doesn't review and compare the whole market every year. Only the new cars that have come out for the year or at least have received a notable upgrade (meaning beyond mere aesthetics). I might not have been there on the day pickups were tested, but I suppose among all the pickups that came out last year (and not all the pickups in the market), Foton was the best.

The Mitsubishi Strada with the new VGT engine is coming this year, so the Blizzard will have solid competition.

@dinzo - OK, granting that the blizzard and the MPX were (during the testing) the best in their respective categories, I just wish to clarify further, if I may, what other models were there to compete up against these Chinese brands? Please correct me if I'm wrong, but technically, the blizzard isn't really a new pick up. It's using a technology from the 90s (from isuzu). The body looks like a Fuego, the engine is from a Fuego, gearbox, chassis, NVH, emission. It's the brand that is only new, well, at least to us. I know this because I have driven the car for several times. The truth is, it's no better, well, not even slightly, than those from the Japanese brands that we see on the roads today. I think those who reacted negatively will be forgiven because as far as I can work out, it just doesn't make sense.

no one is talking about the Cruze here, though it is the topic here in the article. they only base it on the price and the gadgets which are included in the package.

@Jerricson - because the Cruze is somehow worthy.. and we are currently talking about vehicles who championed their categories but are not worthy.. being specific, ung gawang intsik...

@Jerricson - 6thgear-nitro sums it up very well.

I was also blocked by Chevrolet Philippines in their Facebook page since I have been complaining in the their Facebook page. I'm really disappointed how they treat their customers.
