EDSA or Cory Aquino Avenue?

Legislators have started talking about renaming Epifanio delos Santos Avenue (EDSA) to Cory Aquino Avenue following a proposal made by Rep. Rene Lopez Relampagos (1st District, Bohol).

"It would be a fitting tribute to former President Corazon C. Aquino, a woman of courage and valor, that EDSA, an avenue that became testament to the country's love of democracy, be named after her," Relampagos said.

Aside from renaming the major highway, Relampagos's House Bill 5422 also seeks to repeal the law that turned what used to be Highway 54 to EDSA.

EDSA got its current name via Republic Act 2140, which was approved on April 7, 1959. The avenue carries the name Epifanio delos Santos, a scholar, historian and journalist from Malabon.

As expected, the proposal to change EDSA's name has solicited mixed reactions from politicians and historians. Now, we'd like to get your side. (Click here to see what readers think the acronym EDSA should stand for)

    It would be nice to change the name to Cory Aquino Avenue and besides every time we drive we can remember one of the best president's that ever lived in the Philippines and bring back forth democracy.

      don't get blinded by what was done during the Edsa revolution. she did nothing as president! more corruption during her term and all politicians became greedy when she was the president.

      best president? like bruce said, corruption skyrocketed during her term, and the economy actually got worse. people seem to love the symbolism behind cory, but pragmatism dictates that she didn't do a whit of good for our country.

      I agree with bruce and JoHunter. Cory, yeah she was a great person and icon but NOT as president. I respect her because she did give hope to Filipinos who were scared hopeless.

      And as if changing the name would affect the traffic. Like one of the poll answers, I think Cory would be happier if politicians just made a way to solve the problem in EDSA.

      Keep dreaming... renaming edsa next to cory would be a waste of time , taxpayers money and not really necessary. Guess what, everytime i drop by edsa the only thing comes up on my mind is heavy traffic.. seriously..

      to each is his own opinon, i have enough of the Aquino clan, the country was in chaos after Marcos regime and a "few" chosen one families now rule our country! Malinis ang pangalan niya pero hindi siya magaling at yun mga alipores niya ang nagpakasasa sa yaman dahil sa corruption

    Cong. Relampagos your bill is so pathetic.. Sumisipsip kba dahil isa ka sa mga yellow zombies na di napapansin... EDSA to CORY to Do you think it would contribute to ease the traffic in EDSA.. or isa sa mga sasakyan mo RElampagos ang kabilang sa nagpapatrapik sa EDSA.. you will not win another seat in congress EPIC FAIL ka.

    It doesn't have any reason and is only a publicity stunt for himself to appeal to Aquino supporters to get votes.

    It doesn't serve to benefit anyone by changing EDSA's name. As such, if it is really meant for that purpose, then a monument would suffice instead of "personalizing" roads.

    On that note, rallies should be in areas like parks or plaza after seeking permits. They shouldn't be in roads anyway as it disrupts the regular flow of people/work which should be illegal. The rallies are free to express themselves and their right, but this should be without disrupting others. So, make a Cory Aquino Monument and Plaza. And when it is a rally for whatever purpose, place it there as it serves it's purpose while reminding us of one of our past leaders. I do agree however that it was the People Power Revolution and not the Cory Aquino Revolution.

    I think if the congressman wants to name a street or an avenue after ex-pres Cory, to glorify her courage, he may choose from any new streets around MOA.

    I'm not pro nor anti-Aquino but Cory Aquino Ave? Give us a break. Puro Aquino na lang halos lahat baka isang araw Republic of Aquino na ang tawag sa bansa natin.

    I'd have said Cory would be happier if legislators tackled laws that would solve our traffic problems, but she doesn't care about traffic.

      haha.. that is so true! probably because many pinoys are imbeciles themselves.. proof is they keep on voting those that do not know laws but knows acting! and these politicians (this includes the current administration!) don't want these people to be educated (slashing the budget for education) because they will then know who to vote wisely!

    Grabe, sa sobrang daming congressman/woman talagang gumagawa na lang sila ng way para mapansin. Kung papansin lang din naman gusto mo, try mo magsuot ng NEON na barong tapos lagyan mo ng xmas lights. Mas effective yun instead of nonsense bills.

    kung ako tatanungin wag nalang sana... kasi sa lupit ng trAffic sa edsa e at least madaling sabihin n " kakainis 'tong edsa na ito" some even are more profane in their expression of hatred over edsa dahil sa traffic. mahirap n ung pangalan ni madam cory ang mapulaan dahil sa corazon aquino avenue na ang pinaka malupit sa traffic na avenue sa pinas. HOWEVER SA ARAW NA corrected na ang perrenial probl;em sa traffic sa edsa pwede na itong tawaging CORAZON AQUINO AVENUE.

    Nag papapansin lang si relampagos kay Pnoy.... at kapansin pansin nga ginawa nya...we paid taxes for his salary and yet this what we can get from him.. he should think of other way, way more beneficial to people who paid taxes to the governemnt. As for me it is a big NO NO! Better if he think about pushing the tunnel plan for edsa to ease the congestion in the metro.
