Finally! Ford Mustang to be launched this month

By Vernon B. Sarne

Ford Mustang is coming

We have been writing about the planned launch of the Ford Mustang in the Philippines for as long as we can remember. We first discussed this back in December 2010, when we asked you if you were "ready for the pony-car wars." But hitches in--we surmise--pricing and product-planning kept pushing back the scheduled launch, to the point where this news already sounded like a baseless urban legend.

Then, of course, we were vindicated when Ford Group Philippines displayed the new Mustang at the Manila International Auto Show earlier this year, where FGP assistant vice president for communications Anika Salceda-Wycoco officially confirmed that "we will kick off in July and we will have first deliveries in September."

And now, it can finally be confirmed 100 percent that the Mustang will indeed be launched on July 18, as Ford has started asking the media to save the date for the big event.

Ford will bring in two variants of the 2013 Mustang: the V6 Premium and the GT Premium. The first will be powered by a 3.7-liter, 305hp V6 engine, while the latter will be propelled by a 5.0-liter, 420hp V8 powerplant. Both variants will be equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission.

We will release the complete list of specifications and amenities--including, for instance, the standard glass roof on the GT Premium--as we draw nearer to the launch date.

For now, all we can tell you is that the Mustang will be priced competitively. How competitive? Our inside source says "the Mustang GT Premium will be priced below P3 million." That means the V6 Premium will be even more enticing, price-wise.

Maybe those 86 buyers who can't be served by Toyota this year can fork out a little more cash for an American coupe. What do you think?

Is the Ford Mustang a good proposition in the coupe segment?

dont think so.. maybe if pricing is close to the 86/ genesis coupe...
why are carmakers concentrating on these sports cars all of a sudden?
I hope these can "ford" floods
    • RS500 11 months ago
dude. kahit vios di makakalusong sa baha. syempre naman di mo isusugod sa baha yang mustang mo.
    • Stephmeister101 11 months ago
Because after all these years magkakaron ndin ng mgagandang kotse ang pinas
    • bruce 11 months ago
they can't price it close to the 86 specs-wise. 86 will be no match for this car!
    • roadrage 11 months ago
..who's gonna buy a mustang to ford floods? man, sport cars are made to be toys not as your daily multi purpose drive. sure if somebody can afford to buy one, then of course he must have other cars in his garage suited for pothole ridden and flooded metro streets..
    • nonshowbiz 11 months ago
ok ok i know you guys love your sports cars and thats where is the excitement is but in this day in age where everybodys supposedly going green and all that, do you think carmakers should concentrate on practical cars rather than gas guzzling two doors? ...then there's the safety issue when owners drive like richard gutierrez..
by the way Im a reformed former owner of a mitsu eclipse and audi tt who's just getting older.. maybe haha
  • Allain 11 months ago
This is the REAL SPORTS CAR! Even though the 3.7-liter can only run at maximum speed of 180km/h it can reach 100km/h at 5.3 seconds!HALIMAW!
    • Troy 11 months ago
Y u no remove speed limiter?
      • Allain 11 months ago
Pwede siguro pag out of warranty na.
        • Troy 11 months ago
Pero bakit ganun noh? Ni limit lang nila sa 180? Masyadong mababa yun.
          • Allain 11 months ago
Baka kasi wala ng bumili ng 5.0liter V8 engine na Mustang kung lalargahan nila ang 3.7liter. May limiter din kasi ang 5.0 liter which is 240km/h which is also the maximum speed sa US.
            • Troy 11 months ago
Sabagay, pero sana naman kahit 200kph. Thanks for the info man.
  • Allain 11 months ago
Toyota 86 is for "Gwapings"..Ford Mustang is for "The Macho Guys"..LOL
  • 16c galibier 11 months ago
Say about 1.750million for the base and 2.6million for the premium. But it will be a hassle to fix any damage since Ford is closing it's power plant in Sta.Rosa.
    • AM3 11 months ago
Why will it be a hassel to fix? In the local Ford range, only the Escape and outgoing Focus are made in the Sta. Rosa plant, the other models like the Ranger, Everest, Fiesta, Expedition, Explorer for example have always been imported CBU and have nothing to do with the Sta. Rosa plant.
    • triple4 11 months ago
      Tama si AM3.
  • rdjl_13 11 months ago
If the GT Premium is less than 3 million, the V6 premium will be priced a little close to the 86. This will be a bad sign for Toyota. :D
  • d.lake 11 months ago
305hp and 420hp. i wonder where buyers can fully optimize the powerful engine. hindi bagay dito sa philippines
    • neotech93 11 months ago
      the race track perhaps.
    • Stephmeister101 11 months ago
Di nmn porket may big engine ka kelangan gamitin mo na ng todo lagi lagi. Pede prin nmn mag smooth driving and cruise down the streets eh kahit malaking engine. It's just nice to know that when an opportunity comes... You'll have all the power you need ;)
  • The SUV 11 months ago
i thought ford is going out of Philippine market at the end of the year
    • 17Sphynx17 11 months ago
only the plant will close, not the distrbutor or showrooms. I think that is what most people have somehow misinterpreted in the news.
    • AM3 11 months ago
That's what some competitors will want you to think, same goes with some misleading headlines. Ford is actually adding more dealerships in the country and launching new models like the 2013 Mustang and all-new Focus. In the current lineup only the Escape and the outgoing Focus are from the Sta. Rosa plant. The rest of the lineup including the hot selling Fiesta and Explorer have always been imported CBU.
  • 17Sphynx17 11 months ago
Hmm, if the GT V8 premium is sub 3 million, then the V6 Premium could be a little under 2 million or just 2 million. If that would be the case then this would be an enticing vehicle to own.

It is simply a bit more iconic from just the model alone, regardless of trim. It also looks good.

I don't know about parts or servicing though. Would this mean there would be a special technician needed to be within the Philippine shores to service these things?

I doubt though that the closing or continous operation of the Ford Sta Rosa plant would have any effect on the availability of this vehicle as it was never part of what the plant produces or the parts it stored.

Wonder what the infotainment system is for the v6? =P
    • Stephmeister101 11 months ago
The Mustang is not that complicated to have special technicians. I know lots of technicians who are good at fiddling with Mustangs.
  • Vernon B. Sarne
No offense but it's unbelievable how some of us are incapable of comprehending what we read (if we read at all). Ford Group Philippines IS NOT leaving the Philippines. They will just shut down their manufacturing plant. They will still have a sales/distribution office here.
    • AM3 11 months ago
I agree, part of the problem was some newspapers/blogs printed the headlines saying "Ford says Goodbye Philippines". It makes you wonder if Ford's competitors paid for it to mislead buyers into thinking Ford will pull out.
    • pao_lo 11 months ago
Some people just want to overreact for the sake of starting an argument without even having the initiative to read.
    • jtl888 11 months ago
Sir VBS, "cease operation" if you don't mind ;)
    • jtl888 11 months ago
oh, mts here. Just changed my laptop and forgot my password.
  • neutral 11 months ago
Explorer is out of stock and maybe Mustang will be next. But Mustang will not be like the 86 because it has 2 competitors while the latter is new to the market and only the Miata comes close to it. Also, 86 can be a daily car unlike Mustang which is expensive, large, heavy, thirsty and has a stiff ride. The two cars have different markets in mind in favor of Toyota(quantity-wise).

Looking forward to the Big 3's Big Test. Camaro-Challenger-Mustang. It's 1970 once again
    • Troy 11 months ago
Okay yan sir! Like the good old days. :)
  • edrian1011 11 months ago
    Better than the SRT8 392!!!
  • windel 11 months ago
I like this than the camaro...
  • isaac3654 11 months ago
After ko makita ung price nito, tinanong ko sa sarili ko, "ANO ANG CHEVROLET CAMARO?" I love the Mustang in every single way than the Camaro! Suspension set up makes the Mustang more fun to drive. Design wise, I prefer the street swagger of the 2013 Mustang, especially the new Shelby GT500-like front end and the LED daytime running lights!
  • njb1216 11 months ago
It's near the bottom in my alternative list for the 86 simply because of its huge engine. I'd like something near 2.0l or below.
  • GotToRead 11 months ago
2 million to 2.2million for the base variant and God i swear our streets will be swarming with these things.
  • torquebender 11 months ago
kung yan na lang kaya ung ina-assemble sa factory ng ford sa laguna?
    • markdejesus76 11 months ago
Ford would still import parts of the car. Lugi pa din sila.
    • pao_lo 11 months ago
Agree with markdejesus76. Most of the parts will have to be imported, plus if Ford chooses to localize their parts the Philippines' doesn't have a strong supply base to meet certain standards. Not all, but certain standards. IF there is a company that can meet these standards, it'll still be very costly.
  • Feeter Silverster 11 months ago
Welcome Ford mustang, we all knew back then that the Hyundai Genesis Coupe is spec-to-spec pitted vs Chevrolet Camaro, only that Camaro was priced 1.5M more than the GC...they'll be joined by Toyota 86 and Ford Mustang this time. The 3.8L battle would just be concentrated to Genesis Coupe, Mustang and Camaro, then put Toyota 86 only against Genesis Coupe with 2.0 turbo GDI engine. This will be fun.
  • LOWTOYZ_JOLAN 11 months ago
Finally! My DreamCar has arrived :))
  • carls. 11 months ago
    Mustang's 3.7L, 305hp V6 versus the 86's 2.0L 200hp flat-four... It's a bit of mismatch on paper.
  • Marionific!5 11 months ago
    Who's laughing now! :)
  • Stephmeister101 11 months ago
NICE!! at last!! puro nlng kasi grey market eh at least may local na tpos almost prehas sa price ng grey market, 2.6-2.8m sa V6 tpos 3.5m sa V8. Ford Mustang is the cheapest and the best among the 3 (challenger, camaro, mustang) based on customer feedbacks, videos, and reviews
    • Troy 11 months ago
3.5m ang price ng V8 na mustang sa grey market?
      • Stephmeister101 11 months ago
mas mababa ata?? i forgot eh pero cguro 3.2m
        • Troy 11 months ago
Panu yung mga grey market nyan? Edi mapipilitan sila magbaba ng presyo. Haha.
          • Stephmeister101 11 months ago
V6 3m Premium, V8 Base 3.5m while the V8 Premium Full options is 3.8m. These are the prices of HANCARS, a grey market dealer of Mustangs
  • Stephmeister101 11 months ago
Stope comparing tthe 86 to the Mustang. They are of different categories, you are giving injustice to bothe car companies by doing so
  • jbedpan 11 months ago
Among american muscle cars this is the one i like. What's more attractive is the price. If this is in the 3M price range then i will definitely look into this. An M3 costs a whopping 8.5M pesos although so much better in performance but still cannot justify the price tag. This car is a pretty good alternative!
  • jbedpan 11 months ago
I checked the base price in the US its $54k same as the Camaro. So let's see in the streets if this will become a battle like the Fortuner versus Montero.
    • Stephmeister101 11 months ago
The Camaro is very cheap in the US it,s only around 25k and the Mustang is 22k. Here in the Philippines however, Camaro is soo overpriced it costs almost 4.3m for the SS and 3.2m for the V6
  • Jetwash 11 months ago
Mustang. I have a lot of memories for these muscle cars of the 70s. And now they are back. This is a bad *ss mean looking machine. Mabuhay.
  • carl96 11 months ago
    Mustang and Camaro, FIGHT!
  • World Super Cars 11 months ago
    aw.....bakit A/T lang?
  • jclogan 11 months ago
Toyota 86 is not worth comparing to this car. Mustang is powered by either a v6 or v8 engine. While the 86 is just using an inline-4 naturally aspirated engine. No offense pero para ka lang naka Altis 2.0 sa 86. :D
    • jojo204200 11 months ago
hindi po in-line kundi boxer engine ang 86. Ang layo naman ng set-up ng Altis sa 86, palagay pati handling malayo.
  • DePendot 11 months ago
They cant supply the demand -Stup|d Toyota
  • patrick_j 11 months ago
what happened to the 6-speed manual transmission?
  • Troy 11 months ago
Hindi talo ang mustang at ang 86. The mustang's competitors are the Chevrolet camaro and the dodge challenger and the likes. They are muscle cars.
The 86's competitors are the Mazda MX-5, Hyundai Genesis Coupe and the likes. They are tuners.
    • jayzeter19 11 months ago
the GenCoupe V6 is pitted w/ the Mustang,Camaro and Challenger in the US. GC is just 2nd to the mustang spec-spec. theres a video about it in youtube.

btw. the 2.0 GC hast a turbo GDI engine. so specwise GC outwins the 86
      • Troy 11 months ago
Sorry sir I forgot to mention that. May V6 na GC nga pala. Pardon me.
      • Stephmeister101 11 months ago
Yes GC does have a V6 but we are talking about Muscle Cars... They are known for big V8 engines and awesome exhaust sounds. GC is not considered a muscle car. Yes GC has a V6 same as the low variant Mustang and Camaro but they will never be direct competitors. If so then an SUV with a V6 will also be a competitor same as all other roadsters with 3.5 liter V6
  • imro 11 months ago
What happened to the manual transmission????
  • Kim John 11 months ago
sobrang mahal ng mustang compare sa 86!
    • Troy 11 months ago
They are not direct competitors. Compare it to the overpriced camaro.
  • BOOGIECAT 11 months ago
Ikumpara ba naman ang Mustang sa 86.LOL!!

Sayang walang GT500 na Mustang na dadalhin dito ng FGP.
  • Stephmeister101 11 months ago
The prices of Grey market Mustang from HANCARS are as follows: v6 A/T full option is 3.3m V8 A/T Full options is 3.8m. The v6 base A/T is 2.8m while the v8 base A/T is 3.5m. During the previous MIAS i asked Ford about the Mustang and the agent said it would be 3.5m for the V8, if the above statement is true then they must have lowered the prices.. YEY!!! :D
  • Stephmeister101 11 months ago
Additional Info: i inquired about the price TODAY and agents of different branches around metro manila said that the GT v8 premium would cost around 3.5m while the V6 would cost 2.8m
