Top Gear bags three Henry Ford Awards

Elephants, bionic fish, Mercedes - distilled water, Formula One fuel mileage - all of these were featured in the 2006 Henry Ford Awards, an annual recognition of the best in Philippine motoring journalism.

For this year, the HFA continues with its theme of granting journalists the "license to write." All past 20 awardees since 2001 have been given special Henry Ford Awards licenses and specialized car plates bearing their names and the year they've won. For 2006, a total of eight journalists were awarded in 11 categories.

This year's judges involved a fine selection of individuals from government, the academe and the private sector.

Top Gear earned three awards, including the Best Published Photograph for Magazine, Les Croyston's evocative image of a motorbike with an elephant in Thailand. Vernon B. Sarne's story on the Mercedes F-Cell, a hydrogen-powered car that emits only pure water, won Best Environmental and Conservation Feature Story. Finally, renowned journalist Conrado de Quiros' story of his experience with the Mercedes M-Class SUV won Best Test Drive Story.

Meanwhile, TG news editor Jason K. Ang was awarded Best Automotive Online Feature Story for "Fuel Saving Tips from Formula One," and Best Mazda Feature Story. TG road test editor Ulysses K. Ang won Best Ford Feature for his story on a visit to Detroit.

Popong Andolong of Business Mirror won Best Published Photograph for Newspaper, while James Deakin of Philippine Star won Best Motoring Column, Best Safety Feature Story and Best Auto Industry Story.
