Honda Cars PH launches 2.0-liter Civic, other 1.8-liter variants

Honda Civic 2.0 EL

Now that operations at Honda's manufacturing facility in Thailand are back to normal, Honda Cars Philippines has brought in the full lineup of the all-new Civic, most notably including the 2.0-liter Civic EL variant. In February, HCPI launched the 1.8-liter EXI variant sourced directly from Japan. At a simple press event held today at Honda Cars Global City, the company officially unveiled the rest of the Civic lineup assembled and imported from Thailand.

Those variants are the 2.0-liter EL, the 1.8-liter E, and the 1.8-liter S. HCPI is just running out its stock of the Japan-made 1.8-liter EXI, which HCPI calls the "special-edition Civic"; Thailand won't make a similar variant, according to HCPI public relations head Mitch Malto.

You already know that the 1.8-liter engine is rated at 139hp and 174Nm of torque. The bigger 2.0-liter powerplant found under the hood of the Civic EL produces 153hp and 190Nm of torque.

For your quick reference, here are the unique features for each of the new variants from Thailand:

* 2.0 EL - five-speed AT with paddle shifters; 17-inch aluminum wheels; projector-type HID headlamps; fog lights; black leather seats; and Brilliant White paint job.

* 1.8 E - five-speed AT with paddle shifters; 16-inch aluminum wheels; projector-type halogen headlamps; and gray fabric seats.

* 1.8 S - five-speed AT or five-speed MT; 15-inch aluminum wheels; projector-type halogen headlamps; and gray fabric seats.

All variants come with the Econ button as well as the Intelligent Multi-Information Display.

Available colors are Urban Titanium, Carnelian Red, Crystal Black, Taffeta White (for 1.8 E and 1.8 S variants), Brilliant White (for 2.0 EL variant only), Frosty White (for 1.8 E variant only), and Alabaster Silver (for 1.8 S variant only).

The prices? The 1.8 S MT goes for P908,000; 1.8 S AT, P948,000; 1.8 E AT, P1,008,000; and 2.0 EL AT, P1,145,000 (additional P20,000 for Brilliant White color). The Japan-sourced 1.8 EXI AT still sells for P1,074,000.

"The all-new Civic has been well-received and has sold more than 1,200 units to date," said HCPI president and general manager Tatsuya Natsume. "Our factory in Thailand is fully operational with production in full swing. This enabled us to finally launch the full lineup of the all-new Civic. With the availability of a full variant lineup, new Civic buyers will have more options in their choice of features and prices."

    Comparison between 1.8L specs, (1.8 S, E, EXI)
Pros: As I expected, I really really like the front bumper of this Civic, the Thailand/Asian spec, paddle shifters.
Cons: No bluetooth (even 2.0 EL), no back-up camera (even 2.0 EL), no cruise control (even 2.0 EL), grey cloth interior in the 1.8 S and E which really looks boring.
Final Verdict: Buy the special edition Civic if you want only the tech, value for money indeed. Buy the 2.0 of course, for looks and for performance.
    • BOOGIECAT 11 months ago
di naman mahalaga yang backup camera at cruise control.
      • maranello_5775 11 months ago
the back up camera is very useful especially during heavy rains
        • car_mac 11 months ago
        • jabroni 11 months ago
Per my experience sa SUV very useful ang cam while sa sedan oks lng naman kahit backup sensors lng.
      • car_mac 11 months ago
        Post your reply...
      • isaac3654 11 months ago
well it depends on the person, pero what is important is you get a lot of kit from your money :)
      • mark14 11 months ago
I agree. With the cruise control, di naman talaga kailangan sa Pilipinas nyan :)
        • jabroni 11 months ago
If you're living in the city you won't need it but if you frequently use expressways then you'll really appreciate it.
          • isaac3654 11 months ago
Tip: Cruise Control ECON Mode = Big Fuel Savings!
  • patrick_j 11 months ago
    finally, a manual variant.
    • car_mac 11 months ago
        • car_mac 11 months ago
          hahaha
        • jabroni 11 months ago
Cost cutting lng talaga kapal muks
          • gogogo 11 months ago
  • BOOGIECAT 11 months ago
Salamat at may I-MID,Dual Airbags at ABS ang 1.8 S variant.Expect kong eto ang magiging mabentang variant
  • nothing personal 11 months ago
I have read that the modulo bodykit. is also available does the bodykit include the rear spoiler or just the lip and sideskirts?...i also hope that the 2.0's tail pipes are peeking out of the bumper not pointing down. it looks proper peeking out...
  • car_mac 11 months ago
The 2.0 is here at last ! Love those new rim designs, I want to see the 2.0 in the track!!!

I'm worried about recurrent comments on US forums saying the Civic has a battery draining problem. If owners don't use the car for 4 days, it won't start anymore coz the battery has no more current. Apparently this is due to the on-board computer checking car functions (using electricity) even with no key in the ignition. Go figure. Any comment from buyers who got the Japan spec model?
    • isaac3654 11 months ago
      I didn't encounter such a problem. :)
    • fortis 11 months ago
I'll be more concerned on how *gly and boring this car is
      • vonschnipp 11 months ago
Boring perhaps but before you decide it's *gly, please check out on YouTube the Modulo Body kit (type:" Civic 2012 Thailand Version"). all people have so many worries with regards on supply issues, battery, son and so forth...haay. i don't know if a guy like me can buy a car with so many worries...(sighs)
  • Kyoichi Sudo 11 months ago
At last, the proper line-up for the philippine market. But a little disappointed w/ the pricing, the 1.8S MT should be at least P870K and the P908K for the matic, P930K for a manual 1.8E and P968K for the matic. I'm already ok w/ the price of the 2.0L EL. @isaac what's your opinion about the topic? hehehehe peace
    • isaac3654 11 months ago
HAHA ako tlga eh! :)) well, kung tech, 1.8 EXI na =)), kung performance and looks, 2.0 EL (a word of warning though, one disappointment to the 2.0 EL is, the FD 2.0S had a DOHC K20 right? Now thought, its the SOHC R20, though it has the same torque and hp figures as the K20 motor)
    • BOOGIECAT 11 months ago
malabo maging 870k yan dahil may dual airbags ang 1.8 S variant.Yung FD Civic 1.8 V M/T ay nasa 883K.
    • barry 11 months ago
kyoichi, here's your 1 million question: which sedan would you prefer? a honda civic 1.8 S, a hyundai elantra 1.6 GL, a ford focus 1.8 trend or........a 1.6L mitsubishi lancer EX? haha
      • Kyoichi Sudo 11 months ago
Oh come on, I know you know my answer to your question hahahahaha.....
  • Kyoichi Sudo 11 months ago
At least all variants come w/ the i-MID display...
  • jayzeter19 11 months ago
if given the option between This new civic and the old FD civic... i'd still get the FD -_-
  • ashek268 11 months ago
Civic 2.0 EL uses the R20 SOHC, SINGLE OVERHEAD CAM engine, same engine found on the new and previous CR-V 2.0. While all the competition are now using a DOHC, why does Honda use a SOHC config?
    • car_mac 11 months ago
    • markdejesus76 11 months ago
It's lighter. Even if they are SOHC, they still have 4 valves/ cylinder which means they can be at par with DOHC engines while having 1 camshaft I think.
      • vonschnipp 11 months ago
Agree, plus it's easier to normally adjust valve clearance on a SOHC.
  • RS500 11 months ago
See. Syempre di naman nila hahayaang mabalewala civic nila. Tingin ko pwede na yang pricing (vs sa 1M for just a 1.8 liter variant) considering the amount of features it has.
    • ashek268 11 months ago
Pricing NOW is reasonable. Kaya lang it's looks is still depending on your point of view. The real joke now is the pricing for the just launched All New Mazda3. Too much for little.
      • Aloha Milkyway 11 months ago
Also, the Mazda 3 has the most counter intuitive paddle shifters......in the world
  • aeronTGco 11 months ago
    good job to HCPI
  • GotToRead 11 months ago
I really find this Civic awkward looking, look at that front-end...I mean just look at it, it's so weird looking....and the rear-end well it's just plain *gly.
    • RS500 11 months ago
      • GotToRead 11 months ago
yep, subjective ang ganda sa sasakyan, I know but numbers don't lie. But come on, improvement? When it comes to power the 8th generation civic packs more punch than this, WTH Honda? Are you making a step down from the previous generation civic?
      • elxdv 11 months ago
i guess you're right the new civic is like a cheap version of the city. that is why it was not well accepted in the US and Europe. At least Honda is now helping Toyota produce bland and somewhat *gly looking cars.
    • jayzeter19 11 months ago
this new civic is much more related to the old city.. the one w/ bulging roof... I like the back side but the front reminds me of the current honda city only face lifted.. Power?? its even more underpowered than the Previous FD civic.. only good thing is the interior and that ECON thing
      • GotToRead 11 months ago
Yep, couldn't agree more, parang di pinagisipan yung design.
      • jabroni 11 months ago
I don't think you've driven this new model., Where did you get the info that FD is underpowered? Lol
        • isaac3654 11 months ago
They have exactly the same hp and torque figures as the FD. Kung acceleration, dapat ung torque and kung anong RPM available ung peak torque na un, and on this FB Civic, they're just the same with the FD. :)
          • GotToRead 11 months ago
but the point here is they could have improved their design but they did not...
        • jayzeter19 11 months ago
i didn't say that the FD is underpowered.. i said this Current gen civic is more underpowered than the previous FD civic. I drove top of variant FD civic and i admit it accelerates and response well.. then compared this new civic when we had a test drive w/ a friend of mine.. This doesn't do well with speed and acceleration but did really do well in mobility..
          • jabroni 11 months ago
Sir you should instead said new Civic "has less power or less powerful than" when you say "more underpowered than" you're also implying that both are underpowered. Sorry to be a pain in the *ss but that's what I understand from your initial comment.
    • spherion03 11 months ago
The All-New Civic is really good-looking in personal. Before I thought it was *gly, but it will grow on you, unlike the Elantra which is a head-turner, pero nakakasawa ang looks. And with the specs, it is better than the previous one.
      • GotToRead 11 months ago
I've seen it numerous times, and I just couldn't stand it. I wish honda sticked to their old designed Civic's direction.
      • Kyoichi Sudo 11 months ago
    • DePendot 11 months ago
      agree. parang City lang
    • DePendot 11 months ago
      pero mukhang magandang bihisan :-)
    • fortis 11 months ago
Worst Civic ever this car is. Worst in looks, worst in handling, worst in performance. Let's see.. what can it do best? Oh I know.. providing the most boring driving experience to rival that of a Corolla :)

Can't wait to see the updated version of this car. Honda themselves admitted that this car lacks passion.
      • car_mac 11 months ago
Performance of the civic didn't change, only a steep curve disrupts the handling. Its still performance wise for me and also the ride quality.
    • barry 11 months ago
nagsawa na kayo agad. roll out the ford focus for an impression! hehe
  • spherion03 11 months ago
Finally, good job Honda!! Beat Mazda's more pricier 3!!
  • bebesy 11 months ago
any news on the thailand built CRV? Japan spec too expensive at close to 1.6m.
  • td21 11 months ago
  • one.edchelle 11 months ago
oh no, Thailand is baaacckk.... we will miss the CBU Japan cars...
  • ashek268 11 months ago
Now everybody knows why the New FB Civic looks old and uninspiring. Take a look at the leaders of HCPI and you will immediately connect the similarities.
    • jayzeter19 11 months ago
      there you have it! :)
      • GotToRead 11 months ago
Nice one, sir! hahaha BOOOORRRRIIIINNGGG hahahaha
    • spherion03 11 months ago
I think that's for Honda US only. They have different exteriors from other countries, mas maganda naman ng konte napunta saten, mas panget ang likod ng Civic ng US :)
      • jayzeter19 11 months ago
Designs are just the same except the sun roof.. look at the picture at the link and the civic pic above. US market is more superior than the philippine market. So what happens in US also happens in our country. Just look at the launching of the civic few months ago. We didn't accept it well like the US market does. So time to accept the facts.
    • fortis 11 months ago
boringness really is not purely about design but on how it feels to drive.
  • The SUV 11 months ago
    nice
