Kia PH to bring in all-diesel Carens lineup, reveals pricing

By Vernon B. Sarne

Kia Carens

The much-awaited all-new Kia Carens compact MPV is coming to our market this summer, as we reported here recently. Before that, however, Columbian Autocar Corporation, the exclusive distributor of Kia vehicles in the country, is unveiling the new model to the public at the upcoming Manila International Auto Show.

And the distributor has already revealed to TopGear.com.ph some details about the all-new Carens, including the variants as well as the prices.

"We will bring in an all-diesel lineup of the new Carens," CAC marketing boss Boying Soriano told us during a test-drive event for the car in Monaco.

There will be three variants available at launch: the base LX, equipped with a six-speed manual transmission and a six-speed automatic gearbox, and the full-option EX with a six-speed automatic. All variants will be powered by a 1.7-liter diesel engine rated at 134hp and 330Nm.

The prices?

CAC president Ginia Domingo told us that the EX automatic will be priced at P1,480,000, while the LX manual and the LX automatic will go for P1,180,000 and P1,280,000, respectively.

What's more, Domingo also told us that they will do a pre-selling activity at MIAS, and those who will reserve a unit at the motor show will get a P50,000 discount.

Prepare the checkbook, people.

Wow! The LX manual and LX automatic is a winner, not sure about the EX though. They should have brought at least 2 gasoline fed variants priced 900k for the manual and the automatic somewhere in 1.1m. All in all good job Kia! This is one sexy MPV!
  • LACOSTER Mar 18 2013 @ 03:43pm
awesome. Love the design. It no longer looks like a loaf of bread.
    • nicologarcia Mar 18 2013 @ 08:58pm
Actually IMHO, it still does look a lot like a loaf of bread, only now it's Gardenia.
  • TingMatic Mar 18 2013 @ 03:53pm
What? These pricing is in collision with the non VGT CRDi variants of Montero which sells at P1,198,000 and P1,298,000 for manual transmission and automatic transmission, respectively. The Montero non VGT CRDi is 136hp and 314 nm of torque. And definitely, the Montero is bigger, tougher, taller, higher and better looking. Who do you think will be preferred by customers? Plain and simple, the diesel Kia Carens is overpriced and only a selected few who are probably in love with KIA will buy this!
    • rpal Mar 18 2013 @ 04:09pm
customers who prefer fuel efficiency and style.. a 1.7 liter that can produce power of a 2.5 liter (non vgt)
    • LACOSTER Mar 18 2013 @ 05:24pm
buying a car is not all about practicality. if you live in the city why would you need an SUV like that?
      • TingMatic Mar 18 2013 @ 08:35pm
Yap,living in a city like Metro Manila needs a big car given its numerous potholes and frequent flooding. Plus Montero, despite its old engine, is still very much reliable even on heavy traffic day in and day out.
      • focusjohann Mar 20 2013 @ 02:43am
Kaya nga you canvas everytime you buy a car. Bang for buck nga lagi ang gusto natin bilihin diba? We're talking about 1.2m worth of money here.. Imagine what other car you can buy with it.
    • robin_micmac Mar 18 2013 @ 05:34pm
yes and the Montero is a lot heavier too..the Montero is using an L200 based platform. at the end of the day you will still be driving a truck...not everyone likes that. this car will be an option for someone who wants better fuel economy and a much more refined drive..oh the non vgt montero is down on torque too compared to the kia. lets just be happy that we are getting more choices in the market.
      • TingMatic Mar 18 2013 @ 08:38pm
And definitely, the resale value of montero will easily out value by 30 to 40% a Kia Carens. A 2010 Non VGT 4x2 Montero a/t still sell above P1.0Million. Tell me if a 2010 Kia Carens would even sell for P600k. That's the deal clincher, my friend!
        • robin_micmac Mar 18 2013 @ 10:39pm
@tingmatic - i dont think you got my point here. i am not saying that this is a better car than the montero. what i am saying is that this is another choice for buyers in the market. you dont need to convince me that the montero is a better car as i have a montero gtv. i would never see it as an apple to apple comparison. people have different needs and this car might appeal to others even if it doesnt have any appeal to you. you can carry on buying a montero if you like but kia will still offer this car at this price and this spec. if it doesnt sell very well then its not your problem anyway. save yourself from stress

OT: I am still awaiting your response about the new range rover sport. thanks!
          • TingMatic Mar 19 2013 @ 11:10am
Did you not browse the website of the all new range rover where the head light and the back light were copied from Ford Explorer?
            • robin_micmac Mar 19 2013 @ 03:11pm
Did you not read further into the specs? You were saying that its the same car as the old one with lights copied from the explorer. Please do more research before coming into a conclusion. you can reply in the range rover thread if you like so it wouldn't be OT here. Thanks!
      • focusjohann Mar 20 2013 @ 02:52am
Yes we're getting a lot more choices pero at the end of each day while in traffic going to work or out of town with family. I hope you can say to yourself na SULIT NA SULIT ANG GASTOS KO SA CARENS!
        • robin_micmac Mar 20 2013 @ 04:23am
like i said its a choice..nobodys forcing you to buy this car. if you were old enough and experienced what the car manufacturers have to offer in the late 80s and 90s..we are just spoiled for choices these days. wala akong CARENS so hindi ako makasabi ng SULIT NA SULIT ANG GASTOS KO!
    • jetski Mar 18 2013 @ 11:16pm
do not compare a euro-bred car to a never heard model in advanced countries... worlds-apart..
      • FanBoy Mar 19 2013 @ 11:39pm
Never heard or not. IMHO, I am still doubtful of buying a Kia. in addtion, A DIESEL ONE. '_'
    • barry Mar 19 2013 @ 01:16pm
In terms of the price? well, probably. you have your point. You have to remember that people nowadays are budget-conscious buyers and it still depends on what car they need. But if your'e going to compare the specs, it's way too far men. Baka pag nakita mo yung carens, hindi ka na makapagsalita (it's different when you see the car in the metal) because of it's cool and techie features. i don't care if you say it bland. For me, it was a huge improvement in the design, features and lastly, in the engine department. i rest my case...
  • codenamejanrei Mar 18 2013 @ 04:01pm
    Ang mahal ah!!!
    • SymphonyX7 Mar 18 2013 @ 09:45pm
It's prices like this that keep the Innova selling. I mean, the Innova is quite old and unrefined by comparison, but a price difference THAT large won't convince the majority. Besides, most people looking for an MPV just want a cheap-o people carrier. Screw "car-like" driving and comfort. All the Innovas you see on the road is proof of that. We don't have European tastes in this segment. Anyone serious about extra passengers AND comfort will have a much bigger budget.

1.18M for the MT variant? A little more and one can get the entry-level Grand Starex instead. It may be entry-level, but it's still A LOT more spacious AND comfortable than most MPVs.
      • codenamejanrei Mar 18 2013 @ 11:30pm
With that price, I'd rather buy an Innova for an MPV, Montero for an SUV, or a Peugeot with 1.6M price which is an MPV but it's already a luxury vehicle....
  • myas110 Mar 18 2013 @ 04:04pm
bring also the gasoline variant.mas lalong marami ang bibili ng carens
  • keithdb Mar 18 2013 @ 04:16pm
Too expensive. For the price of the Base LX, i would rather get the top of the line innova diesel. I would predict that this will not sell considering that there are a lot more better options at that price range.
  • dredd0 Mar 18 2013 @ 04:19pm
    7 seats?
  • The Stig Mar 18 2013 @ 04:40pm
ang mahal. i think practical buyers will opt for an innova or a MS GLX.
  • eydijey Mar 18 2013 @ 04:52pm
to compare this with the innova is like comparing iphone 3g with Samsung S4. guess which is Carens?
    • keithdb Mar 18 2013 @ 05:09pm
      samsung galaxy y
    • TingMatic Mar 18 2013 @ 08:40pm
      Karens is Lumia 610!
    • eydijey Mar 19 2013 @ 03:30pm
      matatalino talaga mga tao dito
  • aldy888cbu Mar 18 2013 @ 04:55pm
At that price Toyota is smiling, not much of a competition here. As an MPV going against the Innova it's small. Only a family of midgets will be comfortable inside this car. For a smaller size in engine and cabin space Kia should have priced it lower or at the level of Innova's prices.
In Cebu I heard prices of Kia vehicles are priced 100k more than in Manila, dono why? Maybe they think Cebuanos are richer?
    • myk384 Mar 18 2013 @ 10:15pm
Kaya mas mahal sa Cebu is due to freight charges. Pinapatong sa presyo ng kotse
      • snoid_zero Mar 19 2013 @ 07:25am
Nope...may kasamang hidden charges yan and they can't give me a valid reason why.
Hyundai Cebu freight charges are way much lower.

So if you're from Cebu, get your Kia from Manila...mas makaka-save ka.
Eto price comparison for the SORENTO 5S LX A/T CRDI 4X2
        Manila = P1,350,000
        Cebu = P1,590,000

        That's a whooping P240,000...
        • aldy888cbu Mar 19 2013 @ 10:40am
Shame on you Kia, that's plain robbery. So that's why they're not transparent in posting their prices, even in their websites.
  • foolishofficer Mar 18 2013 @ 05:13pm
This targets people who prefer shorter and easier to park MPVs over the longer 7-seater SUV (Montero Sport GLX).

Or those who want hatches but can at times carry 7. Diesel based Accent Hatch though cheaper carries only 5 max. Same for the petrol Rio Hatch.

Or those who opt for more modern design over the aging Innova DiD.

Bec if it is just price, they can buy instead the older brother Kia Carnival which costs less.

Or those who want greater pulling power of diesel over petrol (Chevy Orlando territory)
  • neutral Mar 18 2013 @ 05:18pm
The Carens might have been wonderful if the engine is the same as the current Tucson & Sportage(2.0 VGT diesel) but it is still better against Orlando(no diesel yet) & 5008(too expensive).
  • ceejhay Mar 18 2013 @ 05:32pm
    expensive
  • lariboy Mar 18 2013 @ 05:52pm
    jazz?
  • bruce Mar 18 2013 @ 05:58pm
Expensive! I thought the TOTL will be priced at 1.2M range and lower variants at 1.1m below..
  • xxgrendel Mar 18 2013 @ 07:11pm
At the end of the day a truck will always be a truck and a car will always be a car.
and i'd prefer to be in a car. and this is what Kia Carens cater.
  • dencio Mar 18 2013 @ 07:34pm
  • d.lake Mar 18 2013 @ 07:53pm
very expensive. hindi to bebenta ng maayos
  • eljo3025 Mar 18 2013 @ 08:05pm
I'd rather buy a Sportage Gas or Sportage Diesel or Optima than an LX M/T, LX A/T & EX A/T respectively.
    • TingMatic Mar 19 2013 @ 11:14am
      Ba't may respectively pa?
      • eljo3025 Mar 19 2013 @ 01:14pm
        re·spec·tive·ly

        Adverb

Separately or individually and in the order already mentioned (used when enumerating two or more items or facts that refer back to a...: "they received sentences of one year and eight months, respectively"
  • TingMatic Mar 18 2013 @ 08:43pm
A suicide pricing for Kia Carens. They were probably impressed by the comment of Ford Philippines on Hyundai and Kia where they were compared with Samsung and LG, respectively. Too bad, they took the bait. Sayonara, Kia Carens! No way Jose!
  • Feeter Silverster Mar 18 2013 @ 08:45pm
I'll choose this over Peugeot 3008 anytime, which is incidentally under the same management. This Carens is a Peugeot sales killer.
  • frankm Mar 18 2013 @ 08:53pm
The price is not exciting. I guess not many units will be sold. Kia is a brand still associated with poor service image and many after-sales issues. I hope the dynamic president, Ginia Domingo, will deal the issues and make appropriate corrective actions. The root cause of the problem is the psyche of the branches to make fast killing on customers in after-sales service.
  • yokam888 Mar 18 2013 @ 09:58pm
somebody from kia should study basic economics 101. high demand = high price. eh low na nga demand sa mga kotse nila, ang taas pa ng presyo. paano nyo maakit mga pinoy nyan kia?

look at how honda did it in the pinoy market. sumikat talaga ang honda because of the honda civic EG which was priced like a "people's car" back when it was launched by honda here in the philippines. it was priced cheap but the quality is superb, it even won car of the year. kaya look at honda now, dahil sa naakit na nila ang pinoy sa brand nila, they can now demand one of the highest vehicle prices in the philippines and they still sell a lot of units considering their high prices.

ganyan dapat ang strategy. amen ^_^
  • JTV360 Mar 18 2013 @ 10:14pm
IMHO, no mpv/auv car model should be priced over the 1M mark. Just doesn't make any sense, nobody will spend that much on an mpv.
    • raphnext21 Mar 18 2013 @ 11:33pm
your right but still you may wonder some would buy it, no matter is the price tag if the car qualifies their needs
    • json73002 Mar 29 2013 @ 10:18am
On AUV you're right. For MPV I think you're totally wrong.
  • raphnext21 Mar 18 2013 @ 11:31pm
not all customer will buy montero or innova, i think the introduction of the new carens is just to offer something different that a customer suits his or her taste.
  • rdjl_13 Mar 19 2013 @ 01:50am
Compared to an Innova G? The base variants is competitive enough in terms of price. With that engine, the Carens is more bang-for-the-buck. The TOTL is overpriced but if the features are worth it, then it's just okay. If between the Carens LX A/T vs Innova G A/T, I'd choose the Carens. :D
  • codenamejanrei Mar 19 2013 @ 02:48am
Better get a Peugeot which is priced at 1.6M, naka-luxury MPV ka pa! :)
  • Feeter Silverster Mar 19 2013 @ 06:23am
the 1.7 CRDI will be snobbed by Hyundai Accent's 1.6 CRDI engine (125 hp) priced much lower @ just 770k, same number of seating. Think again Kia.
  • soobahru Mar 19 2013 @ 08:41am
    This will sell. Congrats Kia!
  • jowell2307 Mar 19 2013 @ 03:29pm
Pwede pa siguro kung 1M, 1.1M at 1.3M.
  • triple4 Mar 19 2013 @ 04:58pm
Maybe Kia Phils. thinks that people will buy this so they jacked up the price. Or they don't plan to sell big volumes but only to a select few.

Imported from Korea ba ang Carens? Wala ba tayo free trade agreement with Korea?
  • Kyoichi Sudo Mar 19 2013 @ 05:02pm
Dafuq Kia, Dafuq!!! Why price this beast too much?! I was always excited w/ this Carens because I'm expecting a VERY competitive pricetag against the Innova. I was already looking forward seeing your Carens beating the Toyota Innova but what I see hear is Toyota smiling at YOU. What's bad about that? Well, they will just look at you Carens as a very easy rival of the Innova to beat...

Also, if you could have priced the base automatic w/in the P900k price bracket, you could have stole my grandfather's interest of buying an Accent Hatch w/c will happen any moment in this or next month. He's budget is only P950K and he's really not feeling good to buy a vehicle w/ a financing scheme and he wants to have a new vehicle in full payment already...

Too bad Kia, you didn't think too wise on this one...
  • tron05 Mar 19 2013 @ 10:33pm
Sure, sure... not everyone will buy a Montero Sport or an SUV or an Innova.. but, dealers are mandated to make sales: enough sales to be profitable. With the pricing adopted by Kia for the diesel Carens, they can kiss their quotas goodbye. The Caren's price point is just ridiculous because it's already into Sorento terrirtory. The cheaper ones are in the more spacious non-VGT Montero Sports' range. Guess what people will be buying instead of these Carens.
  • BOOGIECAT Mar 20 2013 @ 03:46am
please don't compare a car-based MPV like the new Carens to the likes of those pickup truck-based SUVs!
    • tron05 Mar 20 2013 @ 11:14am
It cannot be helped. The pricing invites the comparison. Of course enthusiasts know the difference between the carens and truck-like SUVs. but majority of the buyers will take a look at the price and ask themselvwes what can they get for that amount... say Php1.48 million?

A few rich people wouldn't mind the sticker price. They'll love twist of that sweet 1.7 diesel, especially in crowded city streets where very high hp won't be maximized. Yet practical buyers will be sure to consider something else.
  • gundam Mar 20 2013 @ 06:12am
    Ang mahal naman.

Sana man lang nabasa ng KIA Ph yung mga comment sa previous article regarding carens or na forward ng TGP para alam nila expectation ng tao.

And congratulations. You successfully disappoint me and maybe a lot of potential buyers also.
    • gundam Mar 20 2013 @ 06:54am
      * congratulations to KIA.
  • iceblue Mar 20 2013 @ 03:36pm
Hopefully, the price is just a trial balloon. Titignan muna nila kung may kakagat at re-price if wala. If they don't re-price, they will just be eaten alive by Innova and other MPVs, SUVs and even Starex price-wise. Just add little bit more and you can have an mid-sized SUV or a Starex.

The new Innova is also rumored to be introduce in 2014.

Personally, I don't think this price is sustainable. If they are going to price the new Carens like this then how much will they price the replacement for the Carnival?

Sana langawin sila sa MIAS para mata-uhan sila ng mas-maaga.
  • jaygarcia777 Mar 25 2013 @ 03:22pm
will this have a same engine as the Hyundai Accent diesel?
  • td21 Mar 26 2013 @ 01:19pm
I think that the price is right. This nice 7 seater mpv/sw combo should not be compared to the aging & crappy auv called innova.
  • Transformers Mar 27 2013 @ 10:36pm
Won't sell with the prices they've announced. Buyers will look elsewhere. Kia doesn't have the prestige or reputation of Toyota, Mitsubishi, Honda or even their sister company Hyundai. They should price their units lower than their bigwig competitors.
  • json73002 Mar 29 2013 @ 10:35am
If you compare Carens with Innova spec by spec, I think KIA has the right to price Carens higher than the Toyota Innova, but not this much.
  • javacard Apr 03 2013 @ 01:57pm
Just saw an ad in sulit selling the new carens MT for under 1M. Confusing!
