Launched: All-new Honda Civic

The Launch Pad

2012 Honda Civic

In the Philippine market, few cars are greeted with more anticipation than an all-new Honda Civic. The Civic occupies that special realm where affordability and excitement meet. It's a family sedan that doesn't emasculate the driver into a kind of domestic submission. That's why car enthusiasts and regular motorists alike always look forward to the introduction of each generation.

Today, after months of anticipation, the all-new Civic is finally introduced to the local market. We already had a close look and seat time in Honda's new car, and we're happy to tell you that it's certainly worth the wait.

The one we drove was the 1.8-liter EXI variant. At first glance of the front profile, you will be forgiven for wondering if you're looking at an all-new car or an extensive redesign. The bumper, grille and headlights have the same angular profile as the outgoing FD-series Civic. But let your eyes linger a bit and you'll see a more wedge-like look, the headlights sweep back more.

If you still have doubts upon seeing the face, the rear will convince you that this is all-new metal. The new taillights are an obvious departure from the usual simplicity of Civic design. The white reflectors extend into the trunk like the Accord's. The 16-inch alloy wheels are new to the Civic, but they look similar to what the City wears.

Whereas the exterior changes might be described as conservative, the cabin is something else. Right in front of the driver, the digital speedometer from the FD is still there, but this time there are rows of lights on either side that either glow blue or green (more on this in a bit). Beside the digital speedo is a five-inch screen that displays a variety of information: trip meter, door-ajar indicator, clock, outside temperature and the display for the rear back-up camera. And this rear camera comes installed from the factory, not some add-on to reinvigorate an aging model line. The screen even has a choice of three wallpapers, and if you don't like what's programmed in, you can swap it with one of your own. Amazing.

The dashboard, including the HVAC and entertainment system controls, is angled toward the lucky driver. But he or she doesn't even need to reach that far to change the song or adjust the volume, the leather steering wheel has audio controls, a feature previously found only on the top of the line 2.0-liter variant.

And here's the special treat: on the other side of the steering wheel are cruise control functions, because, yes, the all-new Civic has cruise control. While it isn't the first in its class to have this (the Subaru Impreza brought it in first), it's still a very useful, not to mention upscale, feature to have. But wait there's more: on the bottom left of the steering wheel are dedicated buttons for the hands-free calling function.

The new Civic is chock-full of interesting toys, but there's one very special feature Honda wants to highlight. To the driver's left, just beside the door, is a very visible green button labeled 'ECON.' Once pressed, it will do several things that will affect fuel economy. It will alter the drive-by-wire throttle response to be less responsive (countering those who drive with heavy feet), change the transmission shift timing, and even adjust the air conditioner. When you're driving efficiently, the lights on either side of the digital speedo change from blue to green, the latter color being the undisputed hue for environmental friendliness. Step harder on the gas and it reverts to blue.

Oh, and there's one more thing. Like what Honda Cars Philippines (HCP) said before, this first batch of Honda Civics comes straight from Japan. In other words, these are basically JDM specs you read about, and this isn't even the top-tier 2.0-liter variant. As of the launch today, only this 1.8-liter EXI variant will be offered in the Philippines, and this is the only variant. There is no more 1.8V base model like before. The 2.0-liter version will be available in several months time.

Under the hood is the same 1,798cc, SOHC inline-four from the FD Civic, still mated to a five-speed automatic. As expected, power figures of 139hp and 174Nm of torque are the same. But the HCP people say the coming 2.0-liter will be a new powerplant.

You might be wondering, how long will HCP keep bringing in units from Japan? Will the cool features still be there once the Thai factories are fully operational? It's hard to say but, if you're in the market for a compact sedan at this point, it might be wise to make a reservation for this P1.074-million car. We just have a feeling these units will sell quickly.

I still think the outgoing/phased out FD is a much better looking car than this. It looks like a steroid-infused City, and I didn't mean that in a good way. Also, it kinda lost its "young executive" look, that its predecessor had and carried quite well. This just doesn't look as inspiring or bold as it could've been, and its probably the reason why this model, in the States, isn't selling so well.
Moreover, the new gadgets that come stock still aren't enough to justify its price- a couple of thousands away from the outgoing 2.0S' SRP. HCPI might be subsidizing the additional costs related to importing this from Japan, but I think it's not quite enough to make it THAT appealing to potential buyers. However, all the best to Honda!

i think its a bargain at 1.074m :) think about it, this car is made in japan, inside a japanese factory, by japanese workers, probably using mostly japanese made parts. the japanese are known to put quality and precision their top priority when manufacturing things, and imho i think honda even is losing money importing these cars from japan and selling them here.

i would rather pay 1m on a pure japanese made car than pay 700k to 900k on a car made by underpaid workers in thailand, indonesia, or worse in india.

these civics will fly off the showrooms easy.

After the initial sticker shock, I say the price is just right. Think about it, the Corolla Altis 1.6V which isn't even as well specced as this Civic already costs 970,000 pesos. It has 200cc's less, 17 horsepower less and one less gear (in automatic guise) and a whole lot less. Spec per spec, I think the Civic wins. However, I don't think the Civic shouldn't be too concerned with the Corolla Altis because The Elantra, in a much sexier wrapper, costs 938,000 and is better specced and has more kit than the Corolla Altis. Honda will have to convince people that it's worth the initial sticker shock and help potential buyers see where the money goes

I think Honda Philippines has a fair price Tag on this car because of being CBU from Japan... But why there is no paddle shifter in this 2012 1.8 variant of Civic? Ang pagkawala ng paddle shifter ang makaka apekto sa sales ng Honda Civic na ang halos sa kalaban niya sa compact sedan ay meron semi- automatic or we call manual transmission driving experience. Thumbs up ako sa major change in exterior at interior area especially the ECO drive button. Pero thumbs down ako sa Walang paddle shifter at Sana ay kaunting price discount to make it Php 1M price.

Anyway Honda is always = quality and reliability

I love the goodies found in this new Civic, what i hate in this sh*t is the pricetag. Why price this sh*t w/ P1.074M and pull out the best selling 1.8V variant? I'd rather buy a Lancer EX GLS or add P46k for the MX w/ paddle shifters w/c is equipped w/ a 2.0L engine that can be found in the top-spec GT-A.

Those features enumerated aren't found in your Elantra or Altis or Cruze. For sure by the time I'm finished typing this. Ubos na yang first batch. I'm sure of it.

I give the new Civic two thumbs up. With the specs given it is value for money, and these cars are known to run the streets longer with good resale value and most importantly they are comfortable and fun to drive. The back design has a more executive look, kinda European and the side profile front and rear facade is more agressive. If you sit inside, they've rid of the blindspot of the front door's frame. Made in Japan too!

    My comments are as follows:

The wheel size doesn't look right at the moment. Hope they eventually upgrade this. (I think a similar situation happened with the Fortuner and Ford Focus where they originally sold it with smaller whells than what they currently have now - small shoes don't look as good but do improve fuel economy especially within city driving)

What is the button for handsfree calling? Is it the button with the exclamation point and 3 windows stacked on top of each other? I can't see it, maybe I'm looking at it wrong though.

Last question is, once it is shipped from Thailand instead of being a JDM, will the price adjust? With a 1m price tag, I would've actually expected more specs in line with safety upgrades like EBD, ABS, Backup Sensors, Multiple Airbags and the like. Perhaps there are those features but they weren't listed in this article yet.

Anyway, I'll just wait for updates pertaining this vehicle near the 3rd and 4th quarter of 2012. I really hope there will be price adjustment as 1m seems a bit too steep for me for a sedan.

    Good luck HCPI! Cheers!

you will never know the quality of Hyundai-Kia vehicles until you own one. you know, the issues found on the first batch of tucson ix like those disc pads that last only up to about 25000 km, A/C not operating at initial start-up, A/T problem, among others. only POLARIZING looks.

okay lang ang price ng Civic ngayon. the outgoing 1.8S model costs 988K. now, for 1.074M, you get extras like i-MID, bluetooth, manual headlight leveling, factory-installed rear view camera, cruise control, econ, PROJECTOR-type headlights, key-integrated remote trunk release, stability control, iPod connectivity, DOUBLE WISHBONE rear suspension, electric power steering, and it's MADE IN JAPAN.

the drawbacks: no paddle shifters, single in-dash CD, manual A/C, no side airbags.

To the editors of Top Gear Philippines, being imported from Japan does not mean that this Civic has JDM specs. The sale current gen Civic sedan has been discontinued in the Japanese market. There is no JDM Civic sedan for this current generation model. The Civic model being sold/introduced would probably have the same specs as those sold in GCC - Gulf countries.

Test drove the 2012 Civic yesterday. The engine seems to be the same with the 07 model (the same car I currently own). Tried to floor it just to make some comparison to my car's engine response but maybe the eco function did something to mute the 2012 civic's powertrain or something but I didn't get the oomph I expected. Maybe the improved NVH level on the new civic (according to the sales agent this is because the new model had a shorter wheelbase) also had something to do with it since the engine noise was also muted :) Speaking about making things shorter, the driver and passenger side seems narrower. The CBU Japan offers auto climate control, cruise control, has a built in video whenever you back up...these are absent on the Thailand built variant. Particularly like the 60/40 split on the back seats. The trunk seems to have the same dimensions as the previous model. The cost is high indeed at 1.074m but this is because of the taxes imposed on CBU Japan variants. Will i buy it??? not necessarily, it's nice to have though =)

I am surprised at how this car is received here in the PH. When this came out in the states, everyone hated it. Honda themselves decided to revamp the Civic, which will come by the end of 2012, just 8 months after it released because it was so ill-received. Iba talaga ang mindset ng mga pinoy pagdating sa Civic.

Looking at photo 11, it seems the sliding door over the cupholders beside the hand brake seems gone. The hand brake's handle is also shaped more traditionally, at least from the surface.

I can't help but think this refresh doesn't offer much beyond the current FD. Sure, some nips and tucks here, a new feature there, but the whole package isn't too compelling. I guess the FD was so ground breaking during its time, even Honda itself is having a hard time outdoing itself. Hard to imagine the FD's already approaching its 7th year in the market. (This coming from a person is definitely not a fan of the FD)

Being a Honda, it'll probably sell okay, but with the Cruze, Elantra, "new" Mazda 3 and all the B-segment subcompacts breathing down on this class, I doubt it'll set any records. The tag price isn't all too exciting, either, but its completely Japan made, and some people here have already taken notice of that.

The 9th generation Honda Civic was widely panned by car reviewers as a laggard among its competitors and in some cases a step back from the previous generation. Significantly, Consumer Reports stripped the Civic of "Recommended Buy" status citing less agility and lower interior quality among other downgrades.

In an act of admission of the criticisms, Honda is now rushing to revamp the Civic just 8 months after it was launched.

It will be interesting to see if Top Gear Philippines' review of the Civic will be as kind as this news article.

According to PaulTan, after completing the roll-out of this new Civic, assembly of the FD at Santa Rosa will cease and consolidated in Thailand. :( City na lang ang may local assembly.

I really, really hope our policymakers are listening. First, Ford, then Honda. I know Toyota's planning to expand, but that's tiny compared to Toyota's investment in Indonesia.

The government should listen to companies that are downsizing operations here in the Philippines. Costs are too high and red tape still gums up business, despite efforts to address this. This really hurts our competitiveness with our neighbors. I know it wasn't this regime's fault, but it's not yet too late to address their concerns, at least for the longer term. Napaka myopic kasi ng mga hinahalal natin sa puwesto, puro populist schemes for short term gains (papogi), walang long-term vision or roadmap. :(
