Mitsubishi resumes local Lancer production

(Updated) Mitsubishi Motors Philippines has resumed the local production of Lancer units to cut import costs and meet the local market's demand for sedans.

Mitsubishi Philippines has added roughly 100 employees to its workforce to manufacture the Lancer starting this month, company president Masahiko Ueki said in a BusinessWorld report.

"We resumed production because of the demand and also [to address] our currency problem," Ueki was quoted saying in the report.

Mitsubishi Philippines, which ceased production of the Lancer six years ago, now aims to make 200 units of the sedan every month. The car company's plant in Rizal also produces utility and commercial vehicles.

The lineup produced in Mitsubishi's plant in Cainta, Rizal is composed of the Lancer EX, Lancer GLX, Lancer GLS, Lancer MX and the Lancer GT-A, Mitsubishi Philippines assistant manager Arlan Reyes said.

Data from the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines showed that Mitsubishi has sold 1,488 passenger cars from January to November.

With 20,815 units sold since the start of the year, Mitsubishi Philippines is the country's second biggest car seller. It tails Toyota Motor Philippines, which has so far sold 41,293 units.

  • nolet says the previous-gen lancer or the lancer EX? if it's the previous gen... will this be the next box-type, in production and showrooms for decades? i certainly hope this includes the EX. if that model is able to drop its price, it's going to take a big bite out of the market share of toyota and honda, and perhaps ford as well.
