MMDA lists 15 accomplishments for the year so far

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority has come up with its accomplishment report for the first few months of 2012. It's quite a lengthy read at 42 pages, so we decided to break down the agency's most notable achievements:

1. Under MMDA chairman Francis Tolentino's leadership, the agency enjoyed its highest performance approval rating at 64.1 percent, according to a Pulse Asia survey done in March 2012, topping the previous high of 60 percent under the agency's former chairman, Bayani Fernando, in March 2005.

2. Six pedestrian footbridges ranging from 18.4m to 82.2m in length were constructed out of the planned 73 for the year.

3. The MMDA completed the realignment of the median island on Commonwealth Avenue from Litex to Doña Carmen to ensure the continuous flow of traffic in anticipation of the construction of MRT Line 7.

4. To enhance road safety, the MMDA is currently installing wall tiles to serve as light reflectors especially during nighttime on the perimeter wall of seven major underpasses in Metro Manila. These are Lagusnilad in Manila, the Quezon Boulevard underpass in Quezon City, the Aurora Boulevard underpass in Quezon City, the Ayala Avenue underpass in Makati City, and the Shaw Boulavard underpass in Mandaluyong City.

5. To help the agency monitor areas in Metro Manila that are beyond the range of its 55 CCTVs, the MMDA now has two Mobile Metrobases. These converted vans serve as mobile command and communications centers with four CCTV monitors and a high-resolution camera on the roof that can record and relay video footage to the agency's main command center.

6. The MMDA completed the Quirino Highway-Mindanao Avenue roundabout in Quezon City, and is currently considering 10 possible sites that could use roundabouts to improve traffic flow.

7. With the adoption of the single ticketing system for the 17 local government units in Metro Manila last March, a total of 37,296 apprehensions were made.

8. With the decrease in the number of motorcycle-related accidents on Commonwealth Avenue and President Diosdado Macapagal Avenue following the implementation of the motorcycle lanes in November 2011, the MMDA established a similar lane on EDSA in February. No fatal accidents have been reported after the implementation of the motorcycle lanes on the three thoroughfares.

9. From January to May, the MMDA apprehended 651 colorum and 439 out-of-line vehicles. In addition, it also caught 471 vehicles operating without a franchise, while 309 vehicles were apprehended for sporting unauthorized improvised license plates.

10. With the implementation of vehicles tags for public-utility buses and AUVs in August 2011 and December 2011, respectively, the agency apprehended 139 violators between January and March 2012.

11. The MMDA installed three LED advisory boards along EDSA: southbound at the corner of Main Avenue in Quezon City; northbound near the Heritage Hotel in Pasay City; and southbound across SM Megamall.

12. From January to April 2012, the MMDA propagated and planted 72,851 types of ornamental and flowering plants along EDSA as part of its metro-wide greening program.

13. To lessen air pollution on EDSA, the MMDA is working with Boysen for its "Everyone Deserves Safe Air" project. Utilizing Boysen's KNOxOUT paint, which cleans toxins through its active ingredients that transform harmful substances like nitrogen oxide and carbon monoxide into harmless residues easily washed away by water, artist Tapio Snellman began his wall art mural on the Cubao-Aurora Boulevard underpass in January.

14. Through its anti-smoke-belching unit, the MMDA flagged down and tested 1,027 vehicles, of which 296 passed and 731 failed the standard emission test.

15. The MMDA's roadside clearing operations dispatched tow trucks to 976 stalled vehicles within Metro Manila, of which 613 were brought to an emergency bay, while nine were brought to the MMDA impounding area near ULTRA.

What do you think of the MMDA's accomplishments so far this year? Are these commendable or questionable?

What I like most is that he got rid of the tacky pink and blue colors Bayani Fernando used to plaster everywhere, especially those old pink fences! So annoying.

One concern that I have though are the LED Advisory Boards. They are very bright especially at night. Is the brightness adjustable on those things? :)
  • bvnzn 11 months ago
Really? Is that really commendable? To be honest with you, they should do more for the people especially traffic and discipline among public utility vehicles especially buses, jeeps, and taxis.

Truthfully as I have observed, the discipline of the MMDA is very low. Example: There are a lot of 'pasaway' drivers who beat the red light and stop in the middle of roads thus blocking the traffic and yet the MMDA just stand there and do nothing about it instead of ticketing them. Another are people who jaywalk and cross EDSA or other roads. The bridges they built are utterly useless and they don't even give a damn if someone crosses. They just stop and stare without and proper discipline.

The list above show only little actions for the public and yet not enough for the major problems here in Metro Manila. As I see it, they just spend our money on things that are not that helpful like the LED Banner. Yes it may inform people, but do the people really listen? And it is a distraction especially at night when it is way too bright.

Out of 15 I only see 2 worth commending - the motorcycle lane and the colorum buses. But the colorum buses still don't show any signs of improvement when it comes to traffic. Still buses load and unload passengers in the middle of the road, buses blocking the roads which is a cause for traffic, and buses still driving offensively and dangerously in city roads.

I have to agree with bvnzn.

a 5 year plan or long term plan/goal for MMDA is to rid motorists of the color coding or number coding scheme. ample and safe roads everywhere, that, to me will be a huge achievement.

  • ako_si_bigotilyo 11 months ago
Don't you think posting something like this is tantamount to bragging to people their little "achievements" ?

Why don't you start / do something from the most annoying and obvious disturbance, the jeepneys and illegal HIDs.

    1.) I can't believe this..
2.) There's the bridge, where's the people? Down there, walking on the street.
3.) Job well done. But please also anticipate the accidents that are going there.
    4.) Another job well done.
5.) Ah, there's a large kickback here. I wonder why ex-Mayor didn't see through this one..
6.) Ooohh, not a good idea. Hope this will not push through.
7.) Single ticketing my arse. Corruption still exists.
    8.) Another job well done.
9.) How about the colorum fx with the PNP as operator? Hope its included.
10.) Not really an accomplishment if you ask me.
    11.) Okay..
12.) Very good. We just hope our gov't would support "green vehicles".
13.) This one is purely marketing strategy on both heads. Boysen is NOT the only one selling toxin-free paint. Its like promoting VGT on Mitsu Vehicles wherein other brands also has that.
14.) I have to admit, as far as I know, there's no corruption here. But I really hope gov't should also support hybrid vehicles.
    15.) Good job. :)

Acheivement!???? Achievement??? the only thing chairman pineapple tolentino did was to give inconvenience to drivers, thats the achievement they did! The worst achievement under pineapple tolentino's leadership was the pathetic speed limit on a highway. Motorcycle lane? epic fail, i have seen alot of motorcycles do not follow these lanes and enforcers not doing anything about it.

Sirs,if i may give my opinion. While definitely not outstanding ang achievement nila (6 out of 73 overpass and still with smoke-belching vehicles), It is still worth commending ang ginagawa nila. Rather than an outright insult, it would be best if we'll give developmental, constructive feedback.
From a policy-making standpoint, ang hirap ng ginagawa nila if everything they have to do is to please people, instead of doing the right thing.
Let us leave the expertise of decision-making on them, they have the traffic engineers. I have more faith with francis tolentino versus bayani fernando. At least, he knows how to listen.

for me. good job. merits an average score. not exemplary, but my view is going for excellent.

The motorcycle lane isn't worth commending yet. The one in Commonwealth Ave and EDSA is not placed right and just exposes motorcyclists to more danger from speeding buses and serving jeeps.

    Kudos to Francis "Kindat" Tolentino!

The Mindanao Ave - Quirino Highway roundabout is just plain st*p*d. They put it on what is essentially an overpass - the intersection above an underpass, as in the Edsa-Shaw intersection. It is an already tight intersection to begin with, made even tighter by putting a roundabout that wastes the space inside of it. Prior to this, they put a very small roundabout along Katipunan/Tandang Sora near the Ayala Heights gate - a roundabout of maybe 3 meters in diameter. Another waste.

If the MMDA ever gets to read this, please note successful implementations of the roundabout in other countries - they use very large spaces, similar to but not necessarily as large as the Quezon Memorial Circle. Small roundabouts such as the two above only waste space and worsen traffic.

Mas bilib ako kay bayani.. may kamay na bakal to enforce the law! tska nakakakilabot yung motorcycle lane! por-dyos-por-santo naman! bakit ba nila ilalagay sa gitna ng highway ang motot lane kung saan sa lane na yun nagkakarerahan ang mga "Buses from Hell".. parang recipe of death and disaster yun ah

Biggest achievement - Getting rid of those pink and blue structures dotting our thoroughfares. Those were f*gly.

Let me preface my next statement by saying that I pass through EDSA, Commonwealth and Taft Avenue on a regular basis.

I personally think traffic has gotten really bad - like a throwback to the 90's. Honestly, over the past few months, I've seen more and more bus drivers ignoring traffic rules and straying from their lanes, taxi drivers stopping in the middle of nowhere or making illegal u-turns, trucks passing through EDSA during truck ban hours (meron pa ba nito?), and Jeepney Drivers doing all of the above. Not to mention tricycle drivers not following one way streets, etc.

Just a few years back, there was a semblance of order and discipline (kahit konti). WTF happened????
