The Land Rover Defender has made a name for itself as a no-frills and tough utility vehicle. In the wee hours of this morning, someone found out that the beloved SUV could also be utterly decimated if one were to crash it hard against a very solid object.
Readers (who asked not to be identified) sent us photos of an accident that took place very early today at a Shell gasoline station on Mercedes Avenue in Pasig City. The vehicle involved was a visibly new Defender. The photo-senders all said the personnel of the gas station had told them that the driver of the Defender had been drunk, and that he had two companions with him. One even shared that a guy was thrown out of the windshield because he wasn't wearing his seatbelt. Fortunately, all passengers survived.
We asked Land Rover Club of the Philippines president Robby Consunji if he recognized the Defender, and he said he didn't. He did offer this observation: "From the extent of the damage, the vehicle had to be going very, very fast."
Well, guys, we don't need to spell out the lesson here. Be safe out there.
