Toyota Motor Philippines and Lexus Manila assured there is no need to recall any of the Japanese brand's models in the local market.

"Toyota Motor Corp. has just confirmed that all Philippine Toyota and Lexus models are not affected by the new US market 'stuck in gas pedal' safety recall," Toyota Philippines public relations officer Elijah Marcial said in a text message.

Toyota Philippines' announcement came after Toyota Motor said it will stop selling eight models in the US, which have been found to have an accelerator pedal problem.

"At issue are accelerator pedal mechanisms that could get stuck in the open position due to wear, causing the vehicle to accelerate uncontrollably," car website AutoBlog said.

Toyota Motor expects to recall 2.3 million of the following vehicles affected by the so-called sticking gas pedal in the US:

- Camry (2007 to 2010)
- Corolla (2009 to 2010)
- RAV4 (2009 to 2010)
- Matrix (2009 to 2010)
- Avalon (2005 to 2010)
- Highlander (2010)
- Tundra (2007 to 2010)
- Sequioa (2008 to 2010)

The Toyota Camry and Toyota Corolla Altis units sold in the Philippines are from Thailand, while the Toyota RAV4 units are from Japan.

"Problematic accelerator pedals are used in Europe and other countries, and are NOT used in Japan so that market will not be affected," Toyota Philippines earlier said, quoting a statement from Toyota Motor.

Toyota is the leading automotive brand in the Philippines. It sold 46,193 units in the country last year, representing a market share of 35 percent.

  • Tech0623 says Kahit ano pa sabihin ng Toyota kapag iisa ang nagdesign pare parehas yan kahit anong country.Naiiba lang sa name ng model..mas maniwala pa ako kung sabihin nila sa costumer na free of charges ang upgrading sa unit..well Im still stick to MITSUBISHI!!! (27 January 2010)

  • Oilandgas says it's good i bought my suv from another manufacturer and not toyota, you cannot risk safety for popularity...expect decline in sales of Toyota vehicles and this cannot be covered by telling the public it's only in the US, may stigma na yan...tsk tsk tsk (28 January 2010)
  • Leopaul says that was too close for Toyota.... (28 January 2010)
  • abugeorge says Toyota owe us a few explanation: 1) What is "bad toyota" for america remained "good toyota" for the philippine, is this toyota standard. 2) What does "TQM" stand for, Total Quality Management or Toyota Quality Management. I have seen this sign proudly display on several new toyota vehicles on the road. 3) Does toyota use different parts or standard for vehicles sold in america and in the philippine, if true, we should not believe in all the flashy things being said about toyota abroad. Personaly, I am a user of toyota, I found the car reliable and sturdy, but it need special attention in the body, as it rust easily, three years as in my case. The rear brake is terrible, I almost got killed. (28 January 2010)
  • Mamang tsuper says I guess I made the right decision when I bought a Hyundai last December. (28 January 2010)
  • frankly my dear i don't give a damn says car recall in the philippines...hahaha..lol...forget it...it will never happen...good thing filipinos can fix any problem with their vehicles... kudos to toyota for having a great alibi... (28 January 2010)
  • Mamang tsuper says Syempre hindi aamin ang Toyota na palpak ang product nila sa Philippines. That's suicide for them. But come to think of it. Mas high standard ang Toyota sa USA compared sa Philippines. Kung pumalpak sila sa USA then mas malaking chance mas palpak ang product nila sa Pinas. (28 January 2010)
  • mustang_ina1228 says Tech0623 p*t*ng *n* MO!!! Bobo mo talaga!!! Chupain mo MItsubishi mo na may low resale value!!! Read between the lines, all Philippine Toyota and Lexus models are not affected by the new US market 'stuck in gas pedal' safety recall," (28 January 2010)
  • southboy says ..and even if we are affected, i don't think toyota philippines will recall their vehicles, even the mitsubishi and honda will not do that! (28 January 2010)
  • FordTough says @ mustang_ina1228 - Mamang tsuper & southboy are both correct. The US does have higher standards and EVERY manufacturer here, not just Toyota, would do the same thing. What you should ask is what is Toyota Japan doing? Now if they recall their vehicles, then PI should as well. So just wait and see. BTW, I have a 2009 Pajero now after driving my 03' Pajero for 5 years and I never had any problems w/ it. The resale value was better then my wifes Toyota so I dont quite understand the logic of your statement. (28 January 2010)

  • abugeorge says Here we are gentlemen, Toyota is selling us poorer quality cars, and they do not take the extra efforts to soothe their customers when toyota cars went bad. Well it is election time, and everybody are busy securing their family future, what ever contribution from businesses, local or foreign will be appreciated. Banzai! Viva Democracia, never mind if Juan de la Cruz suffered. (29 January 2010)
  • Thor says its funny how people bash Toyota for its responsible actions regarding their defective vehicles. I hope our reaction is the same when it comes to our own irresponsibility when driving our roads. (29 January 2010)
  • MbE320 says Check this article out at motor trend, its a sort of chronology of Toyota's woes http://www.motortrend.com/features/auto_news/2010/112_1001_toyota_recall_crisis/index.html. It goes beyond the floormats, and gas pedals as what Toyota would have you believe. It surely might have something to do with their fly-by-wire throttles. I had a camry before with a 5SFE..every few months I experience a sticky throttle and the quick remedy was just to clean up the throttle body with a spray cleaner. By sticky..I mean the throttle opens abrutly and it was difficult to modulate the pedal...and this was with a cable type throttle. (29 January 2010)
  • kdb says @Thor, if you read other news sites they were obligated by law to issue the recall so its not exactly that they decided on their own. (29 January 2010)
  • Bob says Feeling kasali nanaman ang mga pinoys... (30 January 2010)
  • evilwez says i thought this news is about a new rav4.. cr*p!! (30 January 2010)
  • Thor says Just some interesting facts... these pedals came from CTS corp, and Indiana-based firm, Ford and GM has the same supplier thus the same problem. But why only focus on Toyota, and not the supplier too? If we find the root cause, then we can say that its not only Toyota that failed in this reliability test, but also other companies that CTS corp supply as well as CTS corp itself. Its an American based company which means American reliability is bad. Toyota is a main competitor of the just recovering automotive company Ford and GM. Given this opportunity, maybe US is exaggerating Toyota's voluntary recall as to destroy Toyota's reputation and capture its market share. (its a conspiracy! just like in the movies) @kdb: I thought Toyota made a Voluntary recall (31 January 2010)
  • abugeorge says As mentioned before, We need toyota motor philippines to explain to us why there are killer toyota's on the road, honestly!! Everybody outside can talk his way to heaven about it from what ever scraps they pick on the road, but can it help. General Motor said "Our products Exceed Customers Expectation." What is there from toyota, "No recall, cry yourself to sleep like a baby!!" (01 February 2010)
  • mustang_ina1228 says Bob, As in "BOBO" Cut the CRAP, *ssh*l*!!! This "RECALL Thing" is a matter of National Issue to the Automobile industry! (01 February 2010)
  • Autobot says It's funny when you ask a Toyota Sales Rep about a vehicle they are selling, most of them would mention that their RAV4, Camry, & Corolla are very popular in the USA, Canada, and the UK, why tell us this now that they are insisting that the Philippine version is different? And about that myth about Toyotas having a higher resale value : In the first place, Toyotas are pricier that their counterparts from Ford, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mitsubishi, & Nissan. I'm not really sure about the price but when did a new CR-V got to be more expensive than a RAV4, or an i30 or Jazz to a Yaris, a Pajero or a Suburban to a Land Cruiser, a Civic or a Lancer to a Corolla? Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm not a car salesman. (01 February 2010)
  • gina cole says Toyota Phils statement is a big big lie! They sacrifice the safety of their vehicles in exchange for profit.. Im thankful na lumabas ang issue of poor quality and compromised safety of toyota cars before I bought a new suv bcoz fortuner sana ang bibilhin ko.. Right now, im contented with my new montero sports. At least, Mitsu has no history of recalling defective vehicles... (04 February 2010)
  • neo says only in the pinas wla recall becoz toyota gets away with defective cars unlike in the US where the americans sue company for defective cars (05 February 2010)
  • monch says Wow... Never knew Toyota salesmen have dirty mouths. Defend your employer all you want, but I think it's only right the Philippine government or an independent automotive association takes this issue more seriously. Filipinos should not bite into whatever Toyota throws at the local Press. Really, how sure are we brand new Toyotas are not defective? (05 February 2010)
  • b3ndz says What Toyota Philippines is feeding us is a lot of b*llsh*t! But Kudos! to Toyota USA if indeed it was a voluntary "full of conscience" recall and not the "We should do the recall now to appear holier than thou because we are likely going to be forced by the US gov't to do the recall anyway" recall. I'm never riding a Toyota taxi or buying a Toyota. (05 February 2010)
(06 February 2010)
  • Lupin says Dati pa naman mey problem na sa toyota, hindi lang na sensationalize, cos as we all know its a big company kaya mahirap banggain, 1 of my friends revo way back 2005 had an accident, and malala ang nangyari, the rear wheal exploded when she was in star toll, and bec of that, the vehicle got out of control and crashed, according to the investigation, what they saw the damage started at the side of the rubber. and when brought up to toyota, ang sinabi lang ay di nila responsibility ang gulong, kase di sila ang gumawa, They have a point, pero di ba dapat they do make sure na dumaan sa quality control ang bawat parts na ilalagay nila sa sasakyan nila? ano yun? (06 February 2010)
  • nansorb says binahang kotse, sticky pedal, what's next? ejecting passenger seats? hirap na makabili ng matinong 2nd hand.. (06 February 2010)
  • je3 says We have just a signed up a deal to purchase toyota innova but this current issue affects us so badly that we are considering to cancel our order. (not unless toyota could promise us a fix before they release the car)What do you think should we do guys? (07 February 2010)
  • abugeorge says @je3, I still believed that toyota is a good car, what I can suggest in your case is to ask for 5 to 10 years unlimited kilometers warranty for those items related to the current issues, and bring the car for checkup anytime you want. (07 February 2010)
  • toyota fanatic says to all camry and corolla owners please shed us some light here, are you experiencing the same problem. (07 February 2010)
  • toyota fanatic says ugali kasi ng pinoy just to fix things if there are problems, seldom complain. i just had an accident with a camry 2007 model almost total wreck but air bags did not come out. buti n lang walang nasaktan . i know camrys have front, rear and side air bags. bakit kaya. (07 February 2010)
  • rupert says @toyota fanatic our 2009 toyota corolla is working fine @monch wala naman recall d2 ehh kaya wag mu cchin ang mga salesman bovulala (08 February 2010)
  • valentine88 says Please naman pag payuhan nyo po ako b4 its too late! I placed an order for a new fortuner but with all these recall and safety issue of toyota im beginning to change my mind. My original choice of brand sana is mitsu montero SE but I was disappointed when I learned from the mitsu dealer that it will take at least 2 to 3 months ang availability ng vehicle bcoz of sales demand unlike fortuner na 2 weeks lang release na ang unit. I hope someone will enlighten me kung kailangan ko na mag back out sa fortuner and just patiently wait for the availabilty of montero... Please.. (08 February 2010)
  • abugeorge says @valentine88, you can call your toyota dealer and ask for a 10 years unlimited kilometers warranty, good, if they agree, look around somewhere, if they refuse. (09 February 2010)
  • gerry pena says I think the Philippines has a Lemon Law enacted in 2007. If this is the case shouldn't the DTI look into this global recall? I doubt it very much that the parts sold in the US are different from those sold here in the Philippines. Toyota has a global design. parts are made by different contractors but the design is the same. It is like saying na ang taas ng quality standard ng Philippines compared sa US kaya walang defective parts sa atin, (10 February 2010)
  • phoebi says I have a new toyota viosE model 2009...worry lang ako kc last july ko lang cya nabili...ano po kaya na eexperience nyo na problem sa unit share nyo nman....ako kc ung sa pedal nga parang mejo d malakas bumatak ung gas.. (18 February 2010)
  • Pochie says It is very obvious!!!! Who will believe that Toyota cars in the Philippines are not affected by the news in US market regarding 'stuck in gas pedal' safety recall? (20 February 2010)
  • OEM says Don't be too sure about toyota philippines statements. Our cars maybe built in thailand. But I am sure as hell that the camry, altis and rav4 built in thailand, japan, us and europe has the same supplier for the gas pedals no matter where they are built.Yeah! our cars are not affected.
