Philippine Utility Vehicle
Philippine Utility Vehicle makes public debut

The Philippine Utility Vehicle (PhUV), a locally assembled utility vehicle, made its public debut with President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo as the principal guest at its launch on June 12.

The unveiling of the PhUV prototype, which coincided with our 109th Indepen-dence Day, was held at the Grand Central Plaza of Market! Market! Mall at the Fort Bonifacio Global City in Taguig.

Designed to carry both people and cargo, the PhUV is assembled from completely knocked down (CKD) parts. At P350,000, this 12-seater, four-wheel-drive vehicle is well within the reach of ordinary Filipinos, said the members of the Motor Vehicle Parts Manufacturers Association of the Philippines (MVPMAP).

"The unveiling of the PhUV on the 109th anniversary of Philippine Independence is a manifestation of the local automobile industry’s commitment and ability to manufacture cheap public utility vehicles with quality," said MVPMAP president Eddie Jose during his speech.

Jose and MVMAP chairman emeritus Feliciano Torres briefed the President on the various components and functions of the vehicle, which was described as a cross between the old Ford Fiera and Toyota Tamaraw. The President was assisted in the unveiling ceremony by Trade and Industry Secretary Peter Favila. The target markets of the PhUV are small-scale Filipino entrepreneurs and overseas Filipino workers. The PhUV prototype was assembled from parts contributed by MVMAP members and financed partly by officials of the association.

MVMAP is hoping that the PhUV will help the local auto industry surpass its 100,000-unit annual sales target.
