President Obama cites US auto industry as blueprint for country's recovery

President Obama gives his 4th State of the Union Address

US President Barack Obama has cited Detroit's recovery as one of the major achievements of his administration. The declaration was given at his 4th State of the Union Address, which many analysts considered as the President's one big chance to convince the voting public to keep him in the White House come November. Obama also used the US auto industry to emphasize the importance of revitalizing America's manufacturing capability:

"This blueprint begins with American manufacturing. On the day I took office, our auto industry was on the verge of collapse. Some even said we should let it die. With a million jobs at stake, I refused to let that happen. In exchange for help, we demanded responsibility. We got workers and automakers to settle their differences. We got the industry to retool and restructure. Today, General Motors is back on top as the world’s number one automakerChrysler has grown faster in the US than any major car company. Ford is investing billions in US plants and factories. And together, the entire industry added nearly 160,000 jobs. We bet on American workers. We bet on American ingenuity. And tonight, the American auto industry is back."

You will note that the President made special mention of the Detroit Big Three being back in the game and even on top of the automotive world. Which naturally begs this question: Did American carmakers really do all the recovery on their own, or were they significantly aided by the misfortunes endured by Japanese car companies last year (in particular, the tsunami in Japan and the flooding in Thailand)?

What do you think?

Yup i think they did a lot on their own. You can see how great their products are doing now compared to say 2008. Plus, you cant be on TOP overnight or even a 1 year span, it took a couple of years before GM and Ford got back on top. Look at their line ups now, Ford - Fiesta, Focus, Ranger, Expedition, GM - Spark, Cruze, Volt etc. those cars can go neck to with their Japanese Counterparts. During 2008, there was no Fiesta in the US or most of the World, there was the Aveo (pathetic) just to name a couple. I congratulate them for a nice turn around.

I think the Big 3 really stood for itself.
As for Chrysler, Yes. The 300c is the product of the bailout of the government after the company nearly collapsed. With the new 300c, i think the bailout was worth it. And it is ready to take control of its segment.

with Ford, absolutely Yes! I think Ford wasn't even greatly affected in the recession. They are producing products that are worth buying, not just in America, but also here in Asia!

There was more than commendable effort from the Americans, Ford especially, in my view. Though it's possible that they learned some discipline and humility from some (not all!!) Asian carmakers as well.

Ford did very well. Strive and Thrived even without government money. The other two just survived because of bailouts. The US government (effectively the tax payers) is still at a loss on their stake in GM given its stock price. And they sold their stake on Chrysler to FIAT also at a loss...
