The 2013 Hyundai Lateral Drift Pro-Am Championship Series is set for its first race weekend this August 31 to September 1 at the Mega Tent on C5 in Libis, Quezon City.
Now in its eighth season, the country's premier drifting championship is now supported by Hyundai Asia Resources, the local distributor of Hyundai vehicles in the Philippines. The 2013 season will feature up to 45 professional and amateur drivers all vying for their respective class championships in the six-round series.
"The sponsorship of HARI and Hyundai is a three-year partnership," said Charlie Cruz, president of Lateral D Productions, the organizer of the racing event. "This is the first time a car manufacturer is sponsoring the whole series, and we are glad to have them on board until 2015."
Part of HARI's support for 2013 goes to facilitating the participation of Japanese judges to score all the events. D1 Grand Prix and Formula Drift couple Kimihiro Obata and Hiromi Kajikuma will be judging and assessing the performance of all the drifters in all the three race weekends of the championship.
"The Japanese judges will have a file of all the participants where they can write their comments and suggestions on how to improve each driver's skill and technique," Cruz revealed. According to Cruz, the whole advancement program for 2013 is designed to uplift the competitive skills of all the drivers for them to have a fighting chance in international drift competitions.
The first race weekend kicks off with practice runs from 8am to 10am. Drivers will be introduced by 12 noon, with the amateur qualifying and tandem runs set to go green by 1pm. The pro drivers will then take to the track by 3pm. Autograph sessions and piggyback rides for pre-selected Hyundai Philippines Facebook page members are also included in the weekend festivities. Pilipinas Got Talent Season 4 finalists Gio Rodriguez and Ralph Tan will also showcase their drifting skills using a 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe to liven up the crowd.
