Ford interior

Because car owners spend more of their time sitting inside the vehicle than ogling their ride from the outside, carmakers meticulously design the cabin. Ford, for one, makes sure that the materials--from fabrics and leathers to plastics--are durable and do not immediately show signs of wear and tear after a short period of time.

So how do the engineers do it? According to a press statement from Ford Philippines, every material inside its vehicles goes through a series of tests to see how it will fare through time. The leather, the plastic and the fabrics are "stretched, scratched, snagged, sniffed and splashed" with grease, tomato sauce and even coffee.

The Five-Finger Scratch Test is employed on different plastics to determine how much, um, scratching abuse they can take from fingernails, jewelry or other pointed objects that may be found inside a vehicle. The Mace Snagging Test, on the other hand, examines seat fabrics by spinning them on rotating rollers about 600 times to see how strong they are.

Notice the light-colored leather seats found in Ford vehicles? They aren't just selected on a whim. The Resistance to Dye Transfer Test rubs different materials--including new blue jeans--on the leather to see if they easily get stained. Seat fabrics are assessed through the Soil and Cleanability Test to see how squeaky clean they can get after being splashed with different contaminants.

To ensure that unpleasant smells do not ruin the in-car experience, Ford also has odor assessors that scrutinize the materials. If you want to further geek out, watch the videos below.
