Toyota Motor PH finds oldest locally manufactured unit

Classic Toyota Hunt

While Ford Group Philippines is currently getting all the attention for announcing yesterday that it will close down its manufacturing facility in Santa Rosa, Laguna, at the end of the year, Toyota Motor Philippines has quietly celebrated a manufacturing milestone in the country.

In March, TMP marked the occasion of its 500,000th production unit. To make the historical feat more special, Toyota launched a search--"Classic Toyota Hunt"--for "the earliest locally manufactured Toyota vehicle." Obviously, units produced in 1989, when TMP started its manufacturing operation here, had an automatic advantage over the others.

True enough, the winner of the contest is a 1989 Toyota Crown owned by Anthony Cheng Liong, who was awarded a brand-new Innova by TMP for the excellent upkeep of his 23-year-old car.

"For me, my 1989 Toyota Crown is a very reliable and sturdy vehicle," Cheng Liong said. "The engine is still good and tough. As for the parts, even though the car is already more than two decades old, they are affordable and still widely available in the market."

"We are fueled by our customers' continuous patronage and their trust in the brand," TMP president Michinobu Sugata declared. "This only inspires us more to continuously provide them with excellent customer service and unmatched product quality."

Its the person whos driving it, not the car itself. But of course the car has good quality but if you are a gentle and a good driver, it could last like that.

Just a thought but I feel like the car has just recently gotten newly tinted and a wash over? For the photoshoot I'm guessing.

I wonder what the interior looks like =)

If the sole criteria is simply "the oldest locally manufactured unit", then this contest is probably rigged. I'm sure there are a lot more locally assembled 60's and 70's era corollas and coronas that are just as preserved as this one.

but they were not assembled by Toyota Motor Philippines because prior to 1989 Delta motors is the official assembler of Toyota vehicles in the country

According to the article, Toyota's first manufacturing plant started in 1989 so I don't know how Toyota can manufacture locally during the 60's and 70's.
