Toyota Motor Philippines to launch 86 sports car 'quite soon'

Toyota 86

The Toyota GT 86, one of the most-anticipated cars launched at the 42nd Tokyo Motor Show, is coming to the Philippines very soon. This was confirmed by no less than Toyota Motor Philippines president Michinobu Sugata, who said the sports car is just one of the many exciting things car enthusiasts can expect from the company as it recovers from various disasters this year.

"We are launching the Toyota 86 in the Philippines quite soon," Sugata said. "I'm very excited about this because I used to be an owner of the AE86."

The Toyota GT 86, a rear-wheel-drive sports coupe, was made by Toyota in collaboration with Subaru carmaker, Fuji Heavy Industries. It was developed to carry the spirit of the AE86, a favorite sports car of tuners worldwide.

It's lightweight and compact, and it runs on a 2.0-liter engine with an output of 197hp and 205Nm. See the specs below.

While Sugata is certain the Toyota 86 will be arriving soon, he said he can't pinpoint the exact date of its Philippine launch.

Another Toyota official said, however, that the company is eyeing a mid-2012 launch for the 86 sports car. The official added that it will be sold at no less more than P2 million.

Sugata expects sports-car enthusiasts to be very excited about the Toyota 86's arrival.

"I have no idea how many units we'll sell but I know there are so many motoring enthusiasts in the Philippines so in the initial stage, I expect quite a number of reservations," he added.

(Clarification: Apologies for the blunder. The Toyota GT 86 will be sold at "no more than P2 million.")

This car has a redline of 7,500 rpm. The interesting thing about its engine is that it can produce almost 200hp without use of forced induction.

@ fortis, yep there's an infographic around the net showing that the hyundai genesis is about as big as the current mustang, and the toyota (GT) 86 is about the size of the current gen MX-5.

"no less than 2M" is too much though.

It's good...but too expensive! I heard it will be priced around $25,000...so that's just somewhere in the P1.3-P1.5M mark...

Three sportscars to watch in 2012: Hyundai Veloster, Toyota GT 86, and the Subaru BRZ!!!

i don't know why there is so much hype with the Genesis and Veloster when in fact Hyundai has no racing heritage.

For me I think Hyundai is just trying too hard to enter that "tuner car, bang for the buck" scene.

You don't need a racing heritage to introduce a racing car. Eh kung iisipin mo nauna lang sila pero sa ganito lang din sila nagsimula.

or we can just wait for the brz sti. hehe! hyundai? oh c'mon. in my opinion i don't think that the genesis coupe and veloster can be classified as a tuner car.

I do get your point Dominic its just that both the Genesis and Veloster hasn't proven themselves yet.
I mean come on, have you read reviews of it that it trumped a household name sports car in terms of overall performance? Does both exhibit any outstanding trait be it the driving experience, engine or handling to set it apart from its competitors? Until they do so I guess that's the time we can compare it to cars like the GT86.

Price-wise well the Genesis and Veloster can be an alternative to the household names. But in terms of outstanding performance alone not yet, not yet now

hyundai is successful in eating up the market share of toyota. halatang halata kaya nilabas ng toyota ito IMO. kung nasa range ng 1.3M -1.45M ito, ok na ok. mas lalong mag mumukhang luma at over priced yung lancer rallyart. If I have the money for a sunday ride, i'd go for this.

"Sugata expects sports-car enthusiasts to be very excited about the Toyota 86's arrival." I am not very excited w/ it. i would rather buy the Subaru BRZ than buying a Toyota

I will definitely choose this or the Subaru BRZ (which is the same car) over the Genesis. These 2 cars will leave behind the competition. But then again I have already set my eyes on a Z4 or a 911 - its a class of their own. But don't get me wrong if I can buy another coupe then I will get this.

Why is it that people are annoyed on someone driving a Genesis? Is it because that person is trying to fit in the Sports Car world but don't want to shell-out the equivalent Cash? Is it equivalent to buying a Fake sports car? Just asking guys.

more than 2 million is real near the WRX STI price, and if its gonna be so when it launches here, i'd rather have the STI... and they said this car was supposed to be STI's eenie weenie tiny under-powered little brother (in terms of performance)... sheesh!! lahat na lang sa pinas overpriced!!!

The 2012 Genesis Coupe inline 4 will produce 270 BHP....will surely smoke the 86.

'The biggest changes to the Genesis Coupe though are through its powertrains.

For the range-topping model, its 3.8-liter V6 engine is now equipped with direction-injection technology and its output has been bumped up to 345hp and 400Nm of torque. For the inline-four engine-packing model, a twin-scroll turbocharger has been added to the mix, pushing is output to 271hp and 373Nm of twist.' Top Gear Article

As previously confirmed, the Subaru BRZ will be powered by the same 2.0-liter horizontally-opposed boxer engine found in the GT 86. The engine even delivers the same 200 HP and 151 lb-ft torque, meaning the promised 300 HP will be reserved for the STI version.

The Subaru BRZ offers excellent maneuverability and stability thanks to its "ultra-low center of gravity package," a feature that has been seemingly left out of the Toyota GT 86.

Why the hell would anyone compare the GT86 to a Genesis Coupe? One is about the size of a Camry, the other an Altis. They may target the same buyer, but I believe that's where their similarities end.

Ang babaw naman nung mga iba dito. Porke walang turbo, ayaw na. Yun nga e walang turbo, walang turbo lag. Kotseng ito hindi para sa pabilisan ng laptime, sa sarap to ng pagmamaneho.....
