Toyota to price 86 sports coupe very competitively

By Vernon B. Sarne

Toyota 86

In our many years of covering the auto industry, seldom have we seen the market getting extremely worked up for the arrival of a new car as much as it is now. Of course, we're referring to the much-awaited Toyota 86 sports coupe. If you've been following our website the past few months, you know this car is coming. In fact, to be very specific, you know it's getting launched next month. Toyota Motor Philippines is even driving the car around Metro Manila from today until Sunday in a publicity motorcade.

We guess the only things left to be determined are the variants and the pricing.

Well, we received information that the 86 will be available in three variants, including a base version and a top-of-the-line model. The prices? We were told the price range for the 86 would be from P1.5 million for the base variant up to P1.8 million for the top variant. Obviously, there's a middle variant between the two. We're guessing the middle one could be an automatic version of the base variant. But that's just a guess.

That's Hyundai Genesis Coupe territory right there. All we can say is: You can now start placing your orders.

very competitive price... a threat to the genesis coupe... would definitely include this on my wishlists...
  • rickyd 11 months ago
at those prices, the 86 will surely sell well here.
  • BOOGIECAT 11 months ago
    NICE..I want the base variant!!!
  • old_school_cars 11 months ago
The price is cheap but how about the supply?
  • neutral 11 months ago
The question now is, will Subaru bring the BRZ to us with the same price as the Toyota FT 86 or GT 86 or just 86?
    • GotToRead 11 months ago
I think not, sir. I've heard that the BRZ is with 200 HP and the premium version of the 86 and Scion FR-S is the most "sports-oriented" of the 3. So we can expect a 1.6-1.7m base variant for the BRZ.
      • ev9402 13 months ago
Well, based on the info released by MotorImage Pilipinas last month when TGP testdrove the BRZ in Singapore, the BRZ will be priced around 2.1-2.2M. That's 400k-600k more expensive than the 86.

Drivers, place your orders! Ready, set, GO!
  • GotToRead 11 months ago
Now this is a very good news! I hope this will be a cue for Hyundai to bring the 2nd generation Genesis Coupe.
  • imnrkz 11 months ago
are they selling the purist edition here? and if they will, how much?
  • carwiki 11 months ago
    (Your thoughts on the article...)
  • carwiki 11 months ago
Magkaparehas lang ba ng horsepower yan and the BRZ?
    • markdejesus76 11 months ago
Yes. But the engine feel, transmission feel, suspension set-up is different.
    • GotToRead 11 months ago
The BRZ got 200 HP and 197 HP for the FT 86.
      • neotech93 11 months ago
both of them have the same engine. est. 197-200bhp then 177whp. hence the names of both manufacturers on the engines of both brz and gt86
        • GotToRead 11 months ago
Virtually these cars are identical both inside and out with just minor differences like the frontal fascia and suspension, bottomline is either of the 2 will be a good pick :D
      • ev9402 13 months ago
They've got the same hp/PS basically because they have the same engine. 197hp=200PS. It's not that BRZ has 200HP and 197HP for 86. BRZ/86/FR-S has 200PS/197hp.
  • gogogo 11 months ago
malaking threat to sa GC. same range ng price eh. hindi na pwedeng labanan na lang sa looks. haha!
  • JFLising 11 months ago
To think that many people believe Japanese cars are more reliable than Korean cars, the Genesis Coupe might have a serious rival now.
  • car_mac 11 months ago
The Subaru BRZ is priced $25,000 for the base variant in the US and $27,000 for the top variant. I will like that more since it has a Boxer Engine and off the record, I liked it because of the Subaru badge. nawawalan kasi ako ng gana pag toyota na yung sports car mo e. kilala ko kasi yung toyota as a family centric vehicle so i would add the BRZ to my wishlist. No offense to 86 fans.
    • GotToRead 11 months ago
I agree Toyota today is more family centric than an aspiring Sports car manufacturer but never forget the AE86, Celica and the Supra.
    • dextermorgan 11 months ago
disagree :) toyota has a good name here and having its badge in a sports car would make toyota fans here in the philippines awe with envy and inspiration:) well established name ang toyota sa pinas ;)
      • car_mac 11 months ago
yeah i know what you mean it has indeed good name pero mas mukang sporty talaga kung badge ng subaru ang dala-dala mo dba?
    • pao_lo 11 months ago
Sabagay. If the Subaru will be priced slightly higher than the 86 Subaru din ako.

The BRZ and the 86 will have the same boxer engine with the D4-S technology from Toyota. So when you pop the hood it'll have a Toyota D4-S and a Subaru Boxer Engine. The difference is the 86 will only have a 197HP engine while the Subaru will have a 200HP engine with Subaru's top variant having (a reportedly) 300hp engine.
  • car_mac 11 months ago
Ang gusto ko talaga dito e yung stance nya, mukang japanese muscle car lalo na sa interior. mukang brusko yung dating nung likod
  • torquebender 11 months ago
ang alam q 20 units lang ang dadalhin dito?
    • Giovchan 11 months ago
umm @torquebender 20 units muna just like the alphard but after nun normal na ung supply :)
  • red.santiago 11 months ago
I think both cars are using the same boxer engine save for some differences in tuning. Basically these two are one and the same so I'm really not bothered with it being a Toyota. A good car, regardless of it's badge is a good car, period.
  • mitsugas 11 months ago
whoa! 86 will be swimming in a flood. hahaha
  • jayzeter19 11 months ago
throw on the reservations!! count me in for the Top Gt-86!! though kakalabas lang ng Ralliart ko haha -_-
  • tgstig 11 months ago
LOL wag naman sana yung RC variant ang base variant dito. Naka steelies lang yun! haha.
Maybe the variants are G, GT and the GT Limited.
    • isaac3654 11 months ago
HAHA mukhang malabo darating ang RC dito. Mukhang ang base ay ung G and ung top spec ay ung GT Limited (Hey, it seems someone is also looking at the Toyota 86 website in Japan :D) kasi ung RC ay for tuning companies kaya naka steelies, black front and rear bumper, no airconditioning, etc, kasi papalitan din naman yan ng mga tuning companies. Isa pang reason ndi darating ang RC dito ay konti lang tuning houses natin dito. Emperor at Speedlab lang kilala ko dito sa Pinas.

Ito ang kasunod na suki ng Banawe pag nagkataon... as I remembered before, it was Civic, Fortuner, Innova, and Altis before are the suki of Banawe shops.
    • gogogo 11 months ago
baka by july dami na aftermarket parts ng 86 sa banawe. hahaha!
  • mindkinetic 11 months ago
wow so it's indeed true that there is a 1.5 base variant and the 1.8 for the full spec-ed then this will sell like hotcakes so to speak . tnx thp for confiing the price. i'l be getting a base variant as well .
  • jc_magracia18@yahoo.com 11 months ago
very competitive price :)) but how about the performance? :)
    • manongtaxi 11 months ago
wala kang poproblemahin sa performance :) lalo na Toyota and Subaru yan, just come to think of it na they made sure that everything will stand up to its reputation na ififill in ng GT-86 from the AE-86
  • edrian1011 11 months ago

Toyota Motor Philippines is even driving the car around Metro Manila from today until Sunday in a publicity motorcade.---kaya pala nakasabay ko sa SLEX yung convoy nila kanina going southbound. May 2 Prius pa na escort hehe
  • carwiki 11 months ago
Mga ilan kaya yung fuel consumption nito?
  • dextermorgan 11 months ago

Nako ito na ang legendary hehehe
  • BOOGIECAT 11 months ago
Wag sanang pahirapan ang pagkuha ng base variant na 86..Yung sa Hiace Super Grandia pahirapan ang pagkuha!
  • Leopaul 11 months ago
Your on the right track, Toyota, you're on the right track. I accept that...
  • mino72 11 months ago
    Good bye Genesis..Hello! 86 :D
  • isaac3654 11 months ago
Priced really very competitively indeed. I want the GT or GT Limited, kung same ang specs ng Japan at Philippines, and considering na, this is also made in Japan, mas may value na itong 86 kysa sa Genesis Coupe. Ito ang mga trim levels ng Toyota 86. http://toyota.jp/86/001_p_001/grade/index.html
  • melbs 11 months ago
Just saw them 86 in Tomas morato, 4 86s to be exact! They look good! But a bit small from 20 meters away.
  • Xspeed 11 months ago

  • spherion03 11 months ago

  • Fernando Amorsolo 11 months ago
    1. It's the remake of the Legend
    2. It's a Toyota
    3. The specs is oh so nice
    4. The look is menacing. It's admirable.
    5. The price is wonderful.

I saw a group of F86 last week on my way home. Wow, looks very nice! I want one!
  • lord_cykb24 11 months ago
I want one....pero I'm still bothered, even though hindi naman talaga ako bibili, which have the most appealing, The 86 or The BRZ...?????
wait a minute guys diba may Hyundai Veloster pa...??? ano ba price range nito baka this would be a competition for the 86's/BRZ's rather than the GC's..???
  • pao_lo 11 months ago
Saw the pack of 86s at Alabang Town Center with a pair of Prius Hybrids and the new Camry. The 86 really looks good in metal. It seats a bit low and the lines gives it the look of a classic sports car. Ganda!
  • melbs 11 months ago
if it is indeed 1.5M for the entry level variant, this would be the track car choice of enthusiasts and tuners! i'm pretty excited
