Although Honda has previously used the City name on a subcompact hatchback in the 80s and early 90s, the lineage of the current Honda City sedan can be traced back to the first sedan model which made its local debut in the late 90s. The 4-door City was developed mainly for Southeast Asia, it was a smaller, simpler and more affordable alternative to the Honda Civic sedan which by then already moved upmarket. In 2003, the tall Jazz-based City sedan was introduced; it inherited its hatchback sibling’s versatile interior. In early 2009, the third iteration of the City sedan landed on our shores, it was now sleeker and sportier than its predecessor. In 2014 Honda Philippines launched the more mature looking third generation City sedan. 2020 marks the arrival of the all-new fourth gen City. The all-new 2021 City now features a more fluid silhouette that’s more elegant and refined. Its longer, wider, and lower than the model it replaces. Its wing face grille and slim headlights are reminiscent of the ones on the current Civic. Range topping models have full LED headlight units. Moving on to the side, it has a pronounced character line which runs the full length. At the rear, it gets wide horizontal taillights. Inside it features a cleaner more symmetrical looking layout with a neatly integrated infotainment touchscreen flanked by vertical AC vents. All variants except for the base S M/T get a larger eight-inch touchscreen. The all-new Honda City's suspension remains the same, independent MacPherson struts up front and the compact torsion beam at the rear. Its steering is rack and pinion with electric power assist. The lone powerplant available is a 1.5-liter i-VTEC gasoline mill which now features double-overhead cams. It produces 119hp and 145Nm of torque. This engine is mated to a continuously variable transmission. The range-topping RS variant gets paddle shifters. All variants of the Honda City come with a host of standard safety features which include dual-airbags, anti-lock braking system with electronic brakeforce distribution, vehicle stability control, three-point seatbelts for all five occupants, and ISOFIX child seat anchors. The range-topping RS trim gets additional safety equipment like curtain airbags.City HatchbackFor 2021, the sporty City Hatchback 1.5 RS joins the lineup.
