2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class

Overview

The original G-class was in production for nearly four decades. Over the years, the rugged SUV evolved into a more powerful and more luxurious SUV but its core remained almost unchanged from the Military-bred 1979 model ― until recently. 

Meet the all-new Mercedes-Benz G-class, although its rugged boxy styling closely follows that of its predecessor, it is in fact an all-new model. Its size has increased slightly to improve interior space. Despite being larger than the model it replaces, the German carmaker was able to make the new model up to 170kg lighter, this of course is largely due to the increased use of aluminum for its body panels.

While the new G-class retains a separate ladder chassis, it has adopted a new independent double-wishbone front suspension and a modern rack and pinion steering. For the rear, it uses an updated version of the coil-sprung live axle setup.

The luxurious interior of the new G-class follows the boxy-with-soft-edges theme of the exterior. Like before, the rugged SUV adopts the contemporary modern tech, controls, and infotainment system of its more road-oriented counterparts. 

There are two engine options to choose from, a 2.9-liter inline-6 oil-burner which pumps out 282hp and 600Nm of torque (G350d), and a 4.0-liter twin-turb0 gasoline V8 which puts out 416hp and 610Nm of torque (G500 AMG Line). Both variants come with a 9-speed 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission. Like before, four-wheel drive is standard on all variants.
