Hi, Botchi. It's my first time to buy a new car, and I want to seek your advice. I'm a family man with a two-year-old son. I've been browsing the web to check out cars, and my choices have now been trimmed down to two: Chevrolet Spin and Ford EcoSport.
I think both are great cars, so I can't decide which one to get. I'm after the performance, safety features, comfort and value for money.
Kindly give me your thoughts about these two cars, their pros and cons, and what you would pick if you were in my shoes.
I hope to hear from you soon. Thank you.
Thanks for your e-mail, Enzo. I'm glad that despite being a family man, you still love your cars!
I got the chance to drive the Ford EcoSport abroad. Power was decent but could definitely use more muscle. The dual-clutch transmission wasn't as jerky as the Focus or the Fiesta. But there's so much room inside considering it's barely bigger than a Fiesta and offers noticeably better ground clearance should you need to brave the flash floods to get home. Fuel economy was a very decent 9-10km/L with a new engine. It should improve as the mileage piles on.
The Chevrolet Spin is a more basic vehicle: It's essentially a sophisticated AUV with a really good engine (the diesel in particular). Sophisticated because it's far more polished to sit inside of and to drive around in compared to typical AUVs like the Mitsubishi Adventure or the Isuzu Crosswind. The Spin is slightly smaller in external dimensions. I liked it for what it is when I test-drove the Spin, but it ultimately lacks the polish and comfort of the EcoSport because, at the end of the day, it is meant to be more of a utility vehicle whereas Ford's is truly a lifestyle-oriented vehicle.

A third option? Check out the Subaru XV or the Kia Sportage diesel. The XV will have the best driving performance, but it does cost more. The Sportage will be the most stylish and there's a diesel option for P1,335,000, which makes it very tempting. These two are quite the stretch for you indeed, but well worth it in my opinion.

Another choice would be the Kia Carens, a true-blue European-bred five-seater MPV that is being offered with fantastic deals and discounts. It will be the most comfortable car in this lot, offering the most room, equipped with a diesel engine and offering the most value for money. You can get one for around P1.3 million or less, too.
I hope this helps. Good luck, regards to your family, and teach your son to love cars at a young age.
