What's the better hatch: The Kia Picanto or the Chevrolet Spark?

For a family's first car

Hi Botchi,

Good day. I’m a car lover and a TGP reader. I've read some of your columns and I like the way you give advice and now I really need your help. I’m planning to buy our first family car. We have two kids aged 7 and 8. We are eyeing a 2016 Kia Picanto but I have seen the all-new Chevrolet Spark and I kind of like it. Which car should we pick? We are planning to buy soon when I disembark this coming September. Thank you Botchi for reading my e-mail and hope to read your reply soon.

Best regards,

Gino

Gino,

Thanks for dropping us a line!

To be honest, I haven't driven either car just yet so I can't give you an honest-to-goodness opinion. But from the little I have seen, I like the Kia’s interior more than Chevrolet's. This is very subjective, but from the one aspect of both cars I am somewhat familiar with, it might help you make your decision.

From experience, while we get to enjoy and admire the cars when looking at them or driving them, the truth is that we spend a huge amount of time inside the car while stuck in traffic or just doing regular, ordinary things. The interior should be a pleasing place to be, it should look smart and modern, shouldn’t easily scratch, and be packed with features. I've always liked Kia’s European-inspired interiors, which is a big deal for me as I spend a lot of time driving.

Chevrolet has always played catch-up with its competitors, and while the gap is closer now than before, it still hasn't fully caught-up yet with the Japanese and even Korean brands. The most obvious difference is the quality of the interiors. Chevrolets have always had very plasticky interiors, similar to cheap China-made toys. It might seem like a small issue, but trust me, if you'll own the car for a minimum of five years or more, the cheap-looking and cheap-feeling interior will start to bother you.

Interior aside though, most of the Chevrolets I've driven recently have been really fun and enjoyable to drive. I apologize if this was the only piece of input I could give, but I hope somehow it still helps you in your decision!

Thanks, Godspeed, and take care always sir!
