Is the Volkswagen California something you’d like sold in the PH?

It's the modern Westfalia camper van

We had stumbled upon a video on YouTube that gave viewers a walkthrough of the Volkswagen California. Honestly, I had no idea that this model even existed. Shame on me, especially as I am such a huge fan of the Westfalia of old. I even have the Lego version of it. I love the idea of having a car that I can live in. Heck, for me, the prospect of owning a nice camper van is probably just as exciting as taking delivery of a sports car. That’s how much I love the idea. Imagine driving to the beach in something like that, finding a nice place to park, popping open the expandable roof, and lounging around inside.

What features does the California have? An elevating roof that retracts at the push of a button; a ceiling bed space; fold-out bed in the cabin; blinds that attach to the windows using magnets; a sink; a kitchen area; a shower; picnic seats that are stored in the rear hatch; a picnic table that does the same; a retractable awning; and lots and lots of storage space. If the original Westfalia had clever engineering to maximize every inch of interior real estate, the California takes it up a notch. This thing is just too cool. It even has the option of all-wheel-drive.

Is this kind of vehicle something that people want to own in the Philippines? Probably not. Only a handful of us will be drooling over it, though. But during a chat with Volkswagen PH’s Franz Decloedt, he said that VW PH would probably consider bringing in the Caravelle. “VW is a people mover, after all.”
