They say big things come in small packages, and in no example is this truer in the automotive world than the Suzuki Jimny.
The hype leading up to the fourth-generation model’s launch was simply unprecedented—rightfully so, as the Jimny’s been a beloved off-roading icon for as long as we can remember. The all-new one, which arrived in the Philippine market back in March 2019, is looking to continue this reputation with the same combination of quirky style, go-anywhere capability, and relative affordability.
So, what’s new with the little Jimny that could after 20 years in hibernation? Here’s everything you need to know about the 2019 version.
Exterior
The Suzuki Jimny might look more rugged than ever now, but that doesn’t mean it’s lost its lovable demeanor. You see, the vehicle’s charm is in its size, and measuring in at just 3,480mm in length and 1,645mm wide, this baby’s still pretty tiny.
If you ask us, its ultra-compact dimension and macho design elements—such as its strong character lines, boxy shoulders, burly front bumper, and no-frills matte black plastic components—play well off one another. You simply will not find anything that looks like the 2019 Suzuki Jimny, and there are no alternatives.
In the Philippines, the off-roader comes in several colors: Solid Jungle Green, Solid Medium Gray, Superior White, Pearl Bluish Black, and Metallic Silky Silver. If you want a two-tone exterior, you can choose from Metallic Brisk Blue, Metallic Chiffon Ivory, and our personal favorite, Solid Kinetic Yellow. The last one simply pops out anywhere you go.
Interior
Spartan is the word to best describe the 2019 Suzuki Jimny’s cabin. Components are mainly made from hard, no-frills plastics and the fabric seats are pretty basic. The overall interior atmosphere is dark, too.
None of the above is a knock on the vehicle by the way. The no-nonsense vibe goes well with the off-roader’s exterior and should be easy to maintain if you’re the type who likes to drive dirty. We think the square-ish instrument cluster deserves special mention, as do the round A/C vents. If you’re looking for quirk, it’s definitely in here, too. Tactical? There’s some of that as well.
Fold the rear seats down and you can get up to 377 liters of luggage space in total—should be enough for most owners, we think. The front seats can recline pretty far (perfect for naps) and can slide back for taller drivers by up to 240mm. Suzuki also claims the cushion frames were designed to better handle shock absorption.
Engine and specs
The Philippines gets the 2019 Suzuki Jimny with only a single powertrain option: A 1.5-liter, four-cylinder gasoline engine capable of 100hp @ 6,000rpm and 130Nm of torque at 4,400rpm. This comes mated to either a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic transmission, and all Jimny units come with the Japanese carmaker’s 4x4 ‘All Grip Pro’ drivetrain.
The abovementioned will be responsible for propelling the 1,435-kilogram Jimny both on- and off-road. Braking duties are handled by solid discs up front and drums in the rear, and the vehicle runs on a three-link rigid axle with coil springs suspension setup.
Extra features
There’s a pretty large 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system inside the Suzuki Jimny, featuring Bluetooth connectivity. No Android Auto or Apple CarPlay here, guys. Sound is coursed through two front speakers for GL units, while GLX units get a pair of additional speakers in the rear.
Only the GLX variant gets an automatic A/C system, cruise control, and headlight leveling. Remote-controlled door locks and electric windows both come as standard across the range. Lastly, the all-new Jimny only comes with dual front airbag units.
Prices and variants
