MG Philippines was supposed to launch several models in 2020, but like everyone else, it had to put its plans on hold—and it wasn’t until just recently, a full two years later—that the carmaker was able to make good on its promise.

The MG HS is the first model from the brand to grace our market this year, and as first impressions go, it definitely lives up to expectations.

One look at this crossover’s exterior and you’ll notice its striking resemblance to other MG models, thanks to its signature Stardust grille on the front end. You might even think it’s the MG ZS—just slightly bigger. While the HS lacks that ‘big daddy’ energy other SUVs have, it boasts a simple yet premium feel all around, with a bit of a sporty vibe thrown in for good measure.

Why premium, you ask? Feast your eyes on the inside. There’s the Stargazer panoramic sunroof and the sport bucket seats up front—perfect for out-of-town drives. You’ll also feel comfortable with the leather and suede enveloping you throughout your journey.

One drawback is you’d have to rely on the infotainment display—a massive 10-inch touchscreen unit that connects to an Android Auto- and Apple CarPlay-equipped multimedia system—to fine-tune your A/C settings. Other than that, it’s a well-equipped cabin that will entice you and your family to go embark on road trips more often. And for cruising to your destination, you get a 166hp, 250Nm 1.5-liter turbopetrol mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

The 2022 MG HS comes in two variants and starts at P1,208,888. If you’d like to know more about this crossover, press play on the video above, and read our first-drive feature here.
