When Nissan Philippines (NPI) launched the all-new Almera, a lot of our readers couldn’t help but ask about the new 1.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine. Most of the questions, to no surprise, were about its fuel consumption.

In order to get a good answer, we took out the Almera on a thorough fuel-efficiency test. For this experiment, we got the top-spec Almera VL Turbo N-Sport CVT. The car was driven through various road and traffic conditions to get a more realistic figure.

The gas tank was refilled at Shell at the start of the test and the trip meters were reset.  The first day consisted mainly of city driving, specifically for grocery runs with two to three people onboard. There was light traffic in the morning and moderate traffic toward the end of the day.

As for the second day, the car was driven from Quezon City to Cavite and back. There was light traffic on the highway but heavy buildup in the city, particularly on EDSA and C5. The Almera was also driven around the city on the third day, albeit only with two occupants and with moderate traffic throughout the day.

At the end of the test, the car was once again refueled. In total, it racked up 360.8km and used up 24.834 liters of gas, good for 14.528km/L. The on-board fuel-consumption gauge, meanwhile, showed 15.6km/L.

So, do you think that’s thrifty enough for a subcompact sedan?
