There’s no better way to find out the real fuel efficiency of a vehicle than to drive it normally in real-world conditions. For this fuel-economy run, we took the Toyota Corolla Cross 1.8 G CVT—the gasoline-powered one, not the hybrid—and drove it around the metro during the previous Christmas break.

The test was simple: We gassed up at Shell, reset the trip meters, and drove as we would any other car. The Corolla Cross was then used for three days in various conditions with different loads.

Afterwards, we headed back to Shell to refuel, and we topped up 26.16 liters of gas. The trip meter read 234.9km at the station, which meant we got 8.98km/L from the Corolla Cross’ 1.8-liter gasoline engine. The on-board meter, however, was a bit off, as it read 9.52km/L (10.5L/100km) at the end of the test.
