One of the biggest selling points for electric kick scooters is their compact form factor. Many are light, foldable, and relatively easy to carry around compared to something like a bicycle. These advantages, though, also make these devices pretty easy to steal.
If this is a worry that’s keeping you from pursuing a shift to alternative mobility, Ducati has a new model you might be interested in. The Italian brand calls the Pro-III its most advanced e-scooter offering yet, thanks in large part to the incorporation of near field communication (NFC) tech in its package.
Each Pro-III unit comes with a special token fitted with an NFC chip that starts the scooter. This is the only way to get the thing to run, and all you have to do is bring the token close to the display. It’s a simple security feature that serves as another layer of protection from e-scooter thieves. Just be sure not to lose that token.
The Pro-III runs on a 350W electric motor paired with a 468Wh battery that offers up to 50km of range on a single charge. You can even charge personal electronic devices using a single USB port located near the e-scooter’s display.
It’s equipped with 10-inch wheels and anti-puncture tubeless tires, powerful LED lights, and disc brakes at the front and rear. The frame is also made of magnesium, which Ducati claims is better for absorbing vibrations.
The company says the Pro-III is already available in its online store. As of this writing, however, the device still isn’t listed there. How much would you be willing to spend for an extra security feature like this thing’s NFC token?
