Just when you thought the truck wars were starting to quiet down, Ford launches the next-generation Ranger. Let’s see how this fresh challenger fares in one of the country’s hottest segments. For this spec-sheet brawl, we’ll be pitting the Blue Oval’s latest truck against the all-new Mazda BT-50 and the Toyota Hilux.
The BT-50 was once the partner of the Ranger, but now the Mazda pickup is paired with the new Isuzu D-Max. The Hilux, meanwhile, is the oldest in this group, but it’s been a bestseller in its segment since forever. For a fair matchup, we’ve chosen the high-trim 4x4 AT variants from each brand and kept the maximum price difference at P90,000.

When it comes to exterior dimensions, the Ranger Wildtrak is the largest pickup here while the BT-50 is the smallest. When it comes to wheelbase figures, the Ford is the longest, while the Toyota is the shortest. All three come standard with 18-inch alloy wheels. The Ranger Wildtrak is equipped with 255/65 R18 tires, while the BT-50 and Hilux Conquest come with 265/60 R18 tires. The Ford tires are narrower but have a larger diameter.
What’s under the hood? The Ranger Wildtrak 4x4 packs a 2.0-liter bi-turbo diesel engine that pumps out 207hp and 500Nm of torque—this is the most powerful of the trio. This is followed by the Hilux Conquest 4x4 equipped with a 2.8-liter diesel mill that puts out 201hp and 500Nm of torque. This matches the torque of the Ford but is slightly down on power by a few ponies. Lastly, the BT-50 4x4 is equipped with a 3.0-liter diesel unit which makes 187hp and 450Nm of torque, the lowest figures in this trio despite having the largest displacement engine.
In the transmission department, the Ford comes with a ten-speed automatic transmission, while the other two pickups get six-speed auto trannies. All three trucks come standard with locking rear differentials. The Ranger Wildtrak is the only one in the group with four-wheel disc brakes, as the other two stick with a more traditional front disc and rear drum setup.
When it comes to safety, all three pickups come with seven airbags, ABS, and electronic stability control, but Ford is ahead when it comes to its long list of driver-assist tech.
