What happens when Formula 1 and NASCAR champions swap cars?

If you read the title of this car and immediately became curious, then you’re reading the right website. This recent video from McLaren shows two-time Formula 1 champion Fernando Alonso swapping driver’s seats with NASCAR champ Jimmie Johnson.

It’s an interesting exchange, really, as the stock and formula cars really are worlds apart. One is a big, heavy ride with a low-revving V8 block up front and big fat tires underneath. The other features a circa-2013 V8 mill and is much lighter with a lot more downforce. The whole thing takes place at Bahrain International Circuit, further adding to the video’s grandiose nature.

What’s cool about this video is that you can see how much the two champions respect the other’s field. Johnson jokes that since NASCAR cars have windshields, his gear wasn’t used to the open g-forces of a formula car and, as a result, his helmet nearly came loose. Alonso, meanwhile, notes how the two cars are very different indeed, with the NASCAR unit having a lot less grip than he’s used to.
